The title of the Introduction (by Arnold Gingrich) says it all: "When A Man Cooks". He continues in similar vein:

"It may not be the most complete cookbook ever compiled, but we feel sure that it can at least lay honest claim to one distinction that comes close to making it unique. It assumes that you know precisely nothing about the subject beforehand, and stays with you, step by step, until it can be safely assumed that you know as much about it as can be conveyed by print. ... For what good are the endless ooh-la-las and fingertip kissing of the experts, cavorting about on the uppermost branches of the culinary tree, when they've neglected to tell you how you shinny up its slippery trunk as far as its lowest branch?"

Lovely, simple, unfussy 1950's American recipes. My family's favourite (now into the fourth generation) is "Beerburgers", the recipe for which can be found on page 148. The illustrations (very period) are an absolute delight. The final section, "The Watched Pot" contains five 'readible edibles'; my favourite of which is Paul Gallico's "Ordeal by Fire": which is a very funny piece about the perils of cooking on a BBQ.
