Jim Hunt is an average 18 year old college student... or he would like to be. He dreams of a door. An important secret about who or what he is lies behind that door; a secret he doesn't want to let out. During a trip home for Christmas break, he is confronted by his destiny, but will he follow the path that his old teacher Park would like him to? Or will he walk away to live a normal life?
Described as Stephen King meets X-men or Star Wars meets Jason Bourne, this eBook will appeal to fans of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Anne Rice, Scott Sigler, Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff, Harry Potter or the Twilight series.
This Paper World by Jeff Lane tells the story of a typical college guy finding out he's not so typical after all. Jim Hunt is experiencing life away from home in South Florida, when he begins to have nightmares that will lead him to his true destiny. While on winter break back home, he meets with his old neighbor who tells him he was made for something more, something greater than this earth has to offer... he's a Champion. He realizes that what he thought was just fun games of shooting and endurance with his neighbor, Park, was really training for who he would one day become. Problem is, Jim isn't sure he wants to be a Champion.
The life of a Champion is one of extreme danger and risk. Jim realizes that there is evil at every turn and must protect the world from the Spoilers' evil doings. A Champion always fights for what is right and is willing to risk everything to protect it... even his life.
For me, this story was a big miss. I think there is a pretty decent plot here, but there is a lack of depth which is disappointing. Champions are good, Spoilers are bad... the end. But why? Just because. There are no twists, turns or surprises... everything pans out the way you expect it to. There are also many scenes that are inconsequential to the plot... it just seems like filler. And there are also some loose ends that never get tied back up.
But, that would all be endurable, if not for the horrendous lack of editing... I mean HORRENDOUS! There were typos and grammatical errors on every.single.page. About halfway through I wondered if Lane had even re-read his own work?! How could he possibly miss sooooo many mistakes? And believe me, I am NO editor... so I'm sure there's even more than what I found.
My recommendation to the author would be to pull this book from Amazon. It is not fair for your readers to spend any money on this unfinished work... even if it is only $2.99. You need to hire a GOOD editor and fix a whole lot of mistakes and also beef up the story a bit. There definitely is something there, but it is FAR from complete.
I cannot comment on the quality of the ideas behind this book, because unfortunately I couldn't make it past the first chapter. The writing feels unpolished, filled with awkward metaphors that pulled me out of the moment. Ratings seem to show there's something in there for someone, but certainly not for me.
"This Paper World" by Jeff Lane @WorldOfJeffLane is a fabulous start to what I think is going to be a first-rate series. I was instantly drawn into to Jim’s life and his relationships with his neighbour and room mate, and how these characters and relationships developed. I am excited to read the next instalment in the fight between champions and spoilers!
This is my second J.L. novel and I can definitely say you've got a new fan. One Way pulled me in and This Paper World hooked me, I can't wait to read the next Champions book! An excellent mix of heroes, villains, good vs. evil, superpowers, secrets, adventure, and drama! I'm reminded of a mix between the X-Men and Richard Raul from The Sword of Truth series, another excellent book!
Jim is thought to be an ordinary college student, until he realizes what his neighbor Park really is. His entire world changes, beginning with strange dreams. He is faced with a very difficult decision. Will Jim rise and take on the responsibility of protecting the world from evil or walk away and try to live a normal life? This book pulls you in right away, making you wonder what is going on. I was confused at first when it jumped from the beginning chapter discussing one person and the second chapter discussing another. It all made sense as I continued to read though. I initially disliked Eric. I felt as if he was another snobby rich kid, boy was i wrong. He has such a great back story and in the end I feel sympathy toward him, and happiness that he did the right thing. I really loved that these characters had real flaws. They were not so amazing that it was unbelievable. Each character has such a compelling story, it makes the reader want to invest the time to discover who they really are. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the names given to the "good" and "bad" guys. Champions are the heroes who fight for the good in the world. Spoilers are the evil beings who ruin what is good. These names are simple, but perfectly fitting. I liked how champions were born and they had to choose to become one. It is as if you are choosing between the good and bad angels on your shoulders. This novel is loaded with action and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat wanting to know more. Very good read! Disclaimer: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Jeff Lane’s story is based on that ever-intriguing premise of supernatural beings walking in plain sight amongst us – one group, fight for good as the Champions, while the others, The Spoilers live to devour the energy of the Champions, thereby depriving the universe of what its warriors of good. Unknown to the book’s protagonist, 18-year-old Jim Hunt, he is a Champion-in-the-making and fated to play an important part in the war between Spoilers and Champions. Jeff Lane’s action-filled book, part sci-fi, part thriller, weaves a story of the supernatural together with a tale of a young man becoming a hero, and this makes for a compelling combination of a personal story about the protagonist, Jim Hunt, and a grander telling of good fighting evil. Several memorable and quirky characters take a turn in the spotlight, like the mysterious neighbour, Nathaniel Parker, the wealthy Reggie, and Eric, Jim’s loyal college friend, who helps him on his journey from ordinary boy to extraordinary Champion, as tension builds up to a dangerous confrontation between Jim and his main adversary. Intriguing suspense, humor, and an exciting story go hand in hand in this, the first book in a series about the Champions.
This exciting first book in The Champion Saga is filled with action-packed suspense, terror, and loss as Champions battle to rid the world of the evil Spoilers.
Even though Jim is the main character in this story, I found myself more fascinated with the multiple layers which made up his roommate. Eric is the typical rich boy living large at daddy’s expense. Partying and girls are the only things bouncing around in his head. However, events throughout the book causes him to mature and eventually become an upstanding citizen.
Jim also grows up quickly. Park has always told him he is free to choose. He has decided to make amends for his error in judgment. He is pushed into accepting his responsibility. As for this decision, he has no regrets.
The final showdown revealed more questions than answers. There were some hints throughout the book almost explaining the reason behind Wesley’s plan. Vince wanted to ask why but knew he wouldn’t get a complete answer. I am also wondering if there is a back-story for the Champion’s revolver??
I’m ready for book 2. Bring on This Burning World!

After reading two other books from this author, I fully expected a suck you in story with this first book The Champion Saga and I certainly wasn't disappointed. This action/adventure tale is classic good vs evil with all the fight for your life scenes that one would expect from such a story. We have a bit of a reluctant hero in Jim as he struggles with the choice of being the fun-loving college student and moving forward with what he thought would be his future or accepting everything that fate has in store for him. Jeff Lane has done a spectacular job of painting a picture of the Champion's world and the character development is quite good. This reader couldn't help but get caught up in Jim's story, especially with such wonderfully descriptive, edge of your seat action scenes. The only drawback for me was the number of grammatical errors in this one. They didn't keep me from enjoying the story, but they were enough that I noticed. The story is still a well-thought out and hard to put down tale that left me anxious to read what's next in the saga.
Lane writes a classic tale of good vs evil, with iconic character archetypes. The storyline follows a familiar path in the growth of a hero. This book is satisfying from cover to cover, the action sequences are so well written that it feels like you are in the middle of the fight and can feel the bullets whizzing by your face. This is the start of a series and I can't wait to see what lies in store for our heroes and villains!
This book was unpredictable. That’s very rare when you read a lot of books. I applaud The author for making such an enjoyable book. I like the camaraderie aspect of it. The action was so well described it felt like you were watching a movie. Can’t wait to read the sequel!
"This Paper World" by Jeff Lane is one of the most refreshing reads I have encountered so far this year. It is a well thought out thriller with all sorts of twists and turns, that leaves you begging for more.
The book starts off with the reader briefly meeting Troy Green in a prologue. This prologue gives the reader a small look into what a Champion is and what they are capable of doing, as well as, a look into their biggest enemy, the Spoilers. With these facts in mind the book starts and the reader is introduced to Jim Hunt, a normal college student that is attending a school miles away from his hometown, and Nathaniel "Park" Parker his older hometown neighbor and friend. As the adventure unfolds, Jim comes home from school for Christmas breaks and finds out after a discussion with Park that he is not just a normal college student, that he has the potential to be a Champion. With this knowledge, not only can Jim change his life forever but he can help protect the world from the most dangerous congregation of people. However, it is only up to Jim how he wants to use this knowledge, does he join Park and the others or does he simply go Rogue.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. It is a refreshing addition to the Sci-Fi genre. The plot was not only well thought out but completely original. It contained unpredictable twists that started at the beginning of the book and went all the way to the end, making this book extremely hard to put down. The main characters and the supporting characters were wonderful and likable. Not only did the main characters have in depth stories about their pasts but the supporting characters did too, which is a wonderful change from other books. This is one of those books that even when you are not reading it, you are thinking about it. It takes over your mind and might even leak a little into your reality (did that person that passed you on the street smell a little weird or did the guy you stood behind in line have a weird smoke like mist coming from him). All in all this was an amazing book and I definitely recommend it and sure hope that there are more adventures to come.
Sometimes, after a long day, it’s nice to just sit down and read an epic novel. Usually, these stories end up being about a hero who is revealed to be ‘The Chosen One’, finds out about an Evil Emperor, trains to defeat him, and saves the day through hard work and sacrifice. Of course, this is only entertaining because I don’t have to live it. If the villain is murderous, I don’t have to worry. If the fate of the world is threatened, I can rest assured it is just a story. Jim Hunt has no such assurance.
I was completely enthralled with this story. Jeff Lane writes in the style of Dean Koontz, and Jim Lane could well be the new Odd Thomas. I am eagerly awaiting Lane's next book of Spoilers and Champions.
This book was so entertaining but also mad me think about all the struggles between good and evil. I felt like I was actually a part of this book and would enjoy being a part of the champions in any capacity! I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Interessante visione sul mondo dei supereroi, piuttosto originale e insolito pur finendo per cadere in alcuni luoghi comuni, soprattutto nella parte centrale del volume.
