We meet a bunch of extended family members of exorcist groups. The MC is being shunned and feared by almost everyone for his heritage, except, ironically, for the couple mean girls who behave normally to him.
This was a pretty interesting book. We get to see mostly Bon’s family and his followers. We also get to see Nagas which are super cool. I’m sad that Rin’s relationship with his friends has regressed so much but he’s starting to become closer with them again. I’m hoping in the next volume or so Bon starts being his friend again.

Me explico.
Ehh, not quite as strong as the last couple volumes imo. That might be influenced a bit by how this is a reread and so I kinda already knew most of the twists - but this volume is mostly a transition into the first longer arc, so there’s a lot of info-dumping that slows down the pace a decent bit.
Rin & his friends having complicated relationship since camping training incident. Now his friends avoid Rin because they know he's secret Identity plus it reminds of their loved ones who dies in blue knights incident & blamed at Rin - like seriously 🤨- if they gonna blamed someone, is his father not his son. I 'm happy for kamiki for not avoiding Rin since she's sitting next to kuro. Shima in other hand, he seems to like kamiki when he called out to her in train but kamiki ignored him 😂.I love shima n his 2 brothers - the new characters (kinzo & junzo). I feel like there's a traitor who gonna take the right eyes thing. Todo got the demon left eyes.

This volume was a good blend of dealing with the fallout from the last arc and setting up the plot points for the new one. It was nice to learn more about Bon, Shima, and Konekomaru.
Blue Exorcist, Volume 5 follows the Tokyo sect of The Knights of the True Cross to Kyoto to help in the search of the missing left eye of the Impure King. When the left eye is stolen from the Deep Keep, Rin and Yukio discover a betrayal amongst their own ranks. A team is immediately assembled to go to Kyoto to prevent the right eye of the Impure King from being stolen.
On the trip to Kyoto, Rin finds that his friends have distanced themselves from him. Everyone isolates him except for one person. Izumo surprised me a lot in this volume and I am kinda digging this hard-headed girl. She's tough, but I think she's a big softie on the inside. Her pep talk with Shiemi (calling her a weed) was her way of tough-love.
There isn't a whole lot of action in this volume, but it is still really interesting with all of the backstories on the monks. There is a shroud of secrecy around Suguro's dad that has me really fascinated. He's an interesting character. He's this frumpy little monk who managed to snag himself a pretty wife. He is the head of warrior-monk exorcists, but he seems to run away when there's trouble. I think he might be hiding a strength that he uses for the greater good. Ryuji Suguro must have inherited it from somewhere!
It was really interesting learning more about Bon (Ryuji Suguro) and why he chose the path to become an exorcist. He kind of kicks ass. He excels at everything he does and he's always got good intentions. He's another one with a tough exterior, but I suspect he's a big teddy bear. I found the Suguro Stress Meter to be so funny.
Again, there are always really hilarious moments thrown into every volume that make me laugh out loud. This series never fails to entertain me. This volume is a bit more somber but it still had its funny moments. I love Kuro hanging on Rin's head and asking about the watermelon. Shura mixing up the alcohol and the soft drinks resulted in some pretty funny moments too.
I've evidently read this volume before, but I didn't remember any of it whatsoever. It's neat to learn more about the other characters, but the whole segment on the train was very (melo)dramatic with lots of yelling and intense faces and general silliness. I'm hoping it doesn't lean too far into it in future volumes as it detracts from the depth of the story for me.
Not that much has happened here, though I've noticed that so far the anime was pretty accurate in their second season and showed almost exactly what the manga wrote. The plot starts to thicken in this volume, introducing the impure king and the role of Bon's dad in the story.
Series Info/Source: This is the 5th volume in the Blue Exorcist shounen manga series. There are 24 volumes published in this series right now in the US with the 25th due out Feb 2021. There are 26 volumes in this series right now with the 27th to be published in 2021 in Japan.
Story (4/5): This was a more interesting storyline than the last volume. Rin tags along with Yukio to help at an incident involving the poison eyeball of the Impure King. Rin is still being alienated by his friends because of them finding out he is the son of Satan. I did enjoy getting to see what the Knights of the True Cross actually do, rather than hanging out with the students the whole time.
Characters (3/5): Not a lot of new characters introduced in this volume, although we do meet some new Knights of the True Cross. The highlight of this volume is Kuro for me; I still don’t like Rin as a character that much and Shuro bugs the crap out of me. Still looking for some decent female characters in here...
Setting (4/5): A lot of this story takes place in some creepy underground tunnels which was a good setting for the story. We get to start a journey to Kyoto as well which should be interesting in the next volume.
Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): Not a lot more to say than what I’ve said in review of previous volumes. These are decently drawn and easy to follow. I like the fast pace and action in this manga. The characters remain a weak point of the series for me. I did like getting into a storyline with a bit more background and “meat” to it, hopefully the Impure King storyline will go on a couple volumes.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this continues to be a solid shonen manga series that I am enjoying. While the drawing and storyline aren’t absolutely fabulous, this is one of the better shonen manga series I have read.
Blue Exorcist Volume 5 is easily one of my favorites so far. It strikes a great balance between lighthearted, character-driven moments and the emotional weight of recent revelations—particularly the group grappling with Rin’s identity as the son of Satan.
The shift in setting to Kyoto brings a welcome change of pace. Getting to see Bon, Konekomaru, and Shima in their hometown adds so much depth to their characters. Watching how the people there interact with them—how much love, respect, and pride their community has for them—was genuinely heartwarming. It added layers to characters who had previously taken more of a backseat, and it made the group dynamic feel more lived-in and real.
At the same time, we see the fallout from Rin’s secret being exposed. The tension is palpable. Some of his friends struggle with the truth more than others, and you can feel the strain on their bond. Still, Rin stays true to himself—awkward, loud, earnest—and you can’t help but root for him. His journey of trying to regain trust without changing who he is adds a powerful emotional thread throughout the volume.
Art-wise, Kazue Kato continues to impress. From expressive character moments to beautifully drawn Kyoto scenery and fluid action sequences, the artwork is both cinematic and deeply personal. The paneling and detail in expressions especially help sell both the comedic beats and the heavier emotional ones.
Volume 5 has just the right mix of humor, heart, and tension to keep the story moving forward while also deepening our connection to these characters. It’s a fantastic entry that leaves you both satisfied and eager for what’s next.
So Rin's shown the group what he truly is, that he's the son of Satan. Rin's kind of acting like nothing's happened, but you can imagine how everyone else is taking it. Oh and Rin has to pass the exorcism exam within six months and we all know how Rin is with studying. . .
Yukio has an assignment and of course Rin has to tag along. Shura's keeping a close eye on Rin and trying to help him master his flame without having to draw his sword. She's also been asked by Father Fujimoto a long time ago to find Rin and teach him sword art.
A thief stole the Left Eye of the Impure King from the Deep Keep, Mr. Todo's family line has kept guard over the Keep since forever. When the eye was taken from the demon lord. The eye can release a very toxic gas that in turn causes disease. Over 40,000 died when the Impure King ran rampant through the land.
Yukio's been called in to assist in recovering the eye and unveiling the thief. Rin gives Shura the slip, which by judging her character isn't hard to do. He joins in to help aid his brother and also keeping a promise he made. Like majority of good plot lines/stories, something goes wrong and soon a new adventure unravels.
Rin and the other Exwires are thrown onto a train headed to Kyoto, they must help the injured exorcists who helped to foil a plot in retrieving the Right Eye of the Impure King. Not to mention assist in the Keep Defenses for the thief will return to gain the other eye.
Rin tries to be friendly to everyone but they're still a little shaken by how demonic Rin had turned when the sword was unsheathed for so long. The train ride to Kyoto's an interesting one for them all, and that's all I'm going to say. Oh, and we get to see our lovely Bariyon's again.
There's cursing and a lot of cleavage/boob action from Shura. She rather go around baring it all then have the dreary outfits of an exorcist. I'm still loving this series and am eager to see what happens next. I love the balance of comedy, action, and violence. Hey some girls like action! On to the next book. . . Payday where are you?
All right, so it looks like there's a slight quality dip. Not by much, but I remember watching Season 2 of the anime and thinking that it didn't quite have the same magic as Season 1, and it looks like that's not only a byproduct of losing momentum with the anime six years later. I know I wasn't the only one with regard to the anime, but it looks like it's something that Kazue Kato herself sensed the possibility of, given her shy, insecurity at the end of the graphic novel collection, noting that she hopes readers will stick with the series because the pacing is going to shift into a longer story. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great manga and throughline story, just that it's quite clear the pacing is a bit off. I know she's touted herself as someone who had worked on her own manga series before Blue Exorcist, although, I would argue Time Killers (a collection of short stories) and Space Traveller Robo & Usakichi (a 16 chapter manga) are very different that of the ongoing Blue Exorcist. This isn't a bad thing, per se, if anything it's pretty evident she is learning as she's going. There's a good story in this arc; it's just not perfect execution, like getting to know the characters was in the previous volumes.
And we're finally breaking from the anime (at least from the first season, lol).
I'm stoked. I like how things are beginning to focus on other characters in the series, namely Yukio and Bon. I'm curious to see how this arc is going to play out. And I loved how the past and present were interspersed in the paneling for the manga. It's mainly from Bon's perspective, of course, but I also loved seeing baby Koneko and Shima (or should I say Renzo?).
And the Kyoto section! I liked seeing the aftermath of how the Blue Night affected exorcists and in this particular case, how it affected those previously unaffiliated with the True Cross. The family and hints of baggage is going to be fun to delve into and I'm ready for it.
I am kinda peeved about the kids and their treatment of Rin - it's mostly understandable but I found Shiemi's sudden avoidance to be rather self-centered. She's upset that Yukio and Rin didn't tell her a deeply personal secret? It felt odd and shallow.
At least my girl, Kamiki came through by calling the others out in true bitchy girl fashion. Small brows really does care. Lol.
Reading this volume I am pleasantly surprised to see just how much the anime followed the manga with the exception of one scene not being animated.
Here we are introduced to a new villain/demon named Todo and let me tell you, I hated him in the anime. I'm sure it will be no different in the manga. Lol. Shura is right that Yukio is far too stressed and uptight. Like it's great that he is very responsible and skilled which is important because Rin and Shuro both could take things more seriously, but he really is bottling everything up and trying too hard to be strong and do things by himself. Just this poor boy. He's so young and has grown up far too fast.
Meanwhile, Rin finds himself being ignored and straight out avoided and feared by his friends after they found out he is the son of Satan. Ofc, this is also true for many others who know who he is; seeing him as a danger.
All the while, in this volume we also get more backstory about Bon and the Kyoto sect.
What I liked most about Blue Exorcist Vol 5 wasn't the main story involving the stolen eyes of the Impure King, but the drama surrounding Ryuji and Rin. Rin is trying to get the others to start trusting him again and it's Rin's gentleness that helps to lift the fear surrounding him. Izumo was my favorite because she had a beautiful moment of kindness. I also like how Ryuji's stubborn personality is explained in this volume and his past makes him a lot more sympathetic. Ryuji''s really just living his own life and taking care of his family and it shows how dedicated he is to that. Volume five set up a lot of very interesting threads and I'm excited to see where they go next. This manga was great and I read it pretty quickly. I really liked it!!!
