Ben M. Baglio created the brief for two series of children's books - Dolphin Diaries and Animal Ark. Dolphin Diaries features a girl and her family from Florida, who travel around the world as marine biologists and study dolphins. Animal Ark features two children who work together to help animals and solve animal-related mysteries. The books were written by commissioned writers in the UK under Baglio's instruction using the pseudonym Lucy Daniels. Each ghostwriter is named with a 'Special Thanks' on the copyright page.
Using his real name he also wrote the book series The Pet Finders Club, featuring a group of three children who search for peoples lost pets.
This book was really written by Sue Welford, who wrote a lot of books in the Animal Ark Universe, not just Animal Ark Pets. This was one of the last books in the series that was published by Scholastic in America.
When I lived in England, ferrets were usually called polecats, unless they were white. Perhaps that was just in the parts of the South, because they are called ferrets in this book. This book was published the year before I ran off to England.
As to the story ... well ... hey, it's an Animal Ark Pets book. It follows the formula. There's kids and animals. It's just the kind of book you forget about 10 minutes after you read it. Not a lot happens.
There is one thing I really liked. Paul Howard draws a newborn puppy. That alone was worth the price of admission.
The children of vets find a ferret at their grandparents' house. They keep it and look for the owner. The daughter is planning for the school's Fun Day fundraiser, and is looking forward to a Book Fair. How will it all turn out?
