Rate this book

This was interesting. I was expecting there to be more "fiction," but this is really trying it's best to be a history book, part "history written from Robespierre's perspective," part standard Marxist materialist explanations of revolution. Honestly, I enjoy the Marxist interpretation of the French Revolution. They seem to be the only ones who love my Incorruptible and Saint-Just the way they should be loved. A good history textbook, but very didactic from that perspective. Last chapter from Saint-Just's perspective and the few areas where the author let the actual writing carry him away (Robespierre's memories of his youth for example), where the most enjoyable for me, as someone who was expecting something more literary. Still, absolutely good at what it does, not it's fault I wanted something different.

Very interesting book. Was intrigued by it all the way through. Good level of detail and analysis of French Revolution from Robespierre's perspective.
