This definitely got me interested in reading more medical related romances; however, the plot feel a little flat so I'm going to give it 3.5 stars
In the Doctor's Bed is my first Brenda Jackson book and while I enjoyed it, it definitely wasn't my favorite. Don't get me wrong, that definitely doesn't turn me off from reading more Brenda Jackson novels; however, I thought this was a little flat. It is about Jaclyn and Lucien. Jaclyn is a Hopewell General intern while Lucien is a head resident. Of course, the two have an attraction for each other; however, the hospital has a no fraternization policy and if the two get caught they risk losing their jobs.
This book definitely gave me Grey's Anatomy vibes except the relationship felt less toxic and I enjoyed Lucien and Jaclyn as characters a little bit more than Meredith and Derrick. They had great chemistry and I really enjoyed that they became so comfortable and willing to open up to each other about their past experiences. Lucien was such a gentleman to Jaclyn and I loved how he would just whisk her away on these fun and exciting trips in attempt to spend quality time with her. However, the plot did absolutely nothing for me. I thought that it started off interesting especially since the characters were technically engaging in a forbidden romance; however, it eventually fizzled out and it felt as though nothing else was happening. There was an event that happens in maybe the last 20 pages or so of the novel, but it didn't necessarily fit into the context of the rest of the book. It left me wanting more and ultimately made the romance between the two characters a little boring.
It's actually quite difficult to write this review because not a lot happened; however, the chemistry between Lucien and Jaclyn was something that I really enjoyed and that's why I decided to keep reading the book. I'm slightly disappointed that this is my first jump into Brenda Jackson, but I'm really excited to try some other things by her. I'll also be checking out some more medical romances in the meantime.
Wow, I've discovered the cure for insomnia!! The first 2/3 NOTHING happens. Then there's a bit of action but it's still somehow boring. Lucien and Jacklyn (cause her parents either couldn't, or were too were too lazy to spell it the right way). They work at the same hospital. Lucien is her boss. NO fraternization allowed. And that is the driving force of the book... the WHOLE book. I thought there might be something revealed about the other characters, but no.
2 Stars doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, just means I didn’t love it.
The characters were great together; I liked the chemistry they had. I just kind of felt like the plot line was a little dull.
I liked that they couldn’t stay away from each other and their attraction couldn’t be denied. But, the “secret” love is just so overdone. Granted this didn’t end in a fiery crash thank goodness or I am afraid I wouldn’t have even bothered to review it. It’s a sweet romance with not a lot of heat or plot. But if that is what you like then this would be the book for you, I just needed something more.
The narration was really good; I liked her voice and tone.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
This was ok, I was so busy trying to figure out how they did their residency program there. It was also kind of boring. The intriguing side story about a fired intern went no where. There wasn't even a mention of it at the end. It was just dropped. Maybe it would continue in the next book?
Really though, I wasn't blown away by this one. It's too bad, I usually like this author's stuff and am always happy to see black character portrayed in a positive light.
Last month was one of my worst reading months in a while. While I didn’t particularly care to read this, I’m glad I did because it took me out of a reading slump. There’s something very comforting about Brenda’s books. I always wish men like her heroes actually existed and then reality sets in.
I love Brenda Jackson, but not really feeling this romance. I like the premise, its in a hospital setting and an intern falls in love with her boss. But something is lacking in this one. It just didn't intrigue me like a normal Brenda Jackson novel. I wouldn't recommend this one.
I love Brenda Jackson. I am a huge fan of her Westmoreland, Madaris, and Forged of Steele series. But this book didn't do it for me. The characters were disjointed and I never really felt a connection while reading. The love scenes are usually inspiring but this time they kinda just were. I figure it's probably a little harder to write a book when you're given a premise instead of developing your own. As this is a part of a series with books written by other authors, the story has to flow through them all. I just feel cheated because Lucien and Jaclyn's story held such great promise. Their conversations seemed stunted and their fall into a relationship seemed more of an afterthought. There's also the repetitive use of "as well" and "the ____ kind". I'm missing the imagery and fantasy I fell in love with when I read my first Westmoreland book. I want back the hot, can't stop reading it love scenes from Irresistible Forces. Bring on the intrigue and mystery that fills the Madaris books from end to end.
I still love BJ and her books are always a must buy for me. I feel each book has it's own chemistry. But the last two, I've felt some chemistry missing.
In The Doctor's Bed by Brenda Jackson from Kimani Romance 2011
I don't mind an easy read romance novel every once in awhile but I was really disappointed in this one. Not only did this book follow the very predictable Harlequin formula, I found the need to remind the reader constantly that this was an Afro American couple very annoying. I read a lot and honestly couldn't careless about the characters race. This novel did absolutely nothing for me and made me wonder if I would want to read other books by this author. I agree that description and settings are needed to develop a storyline but I don't need a recap every chapter. 1 out of 5 at best.

My thoughts: 🔖Page 84 of 217 Chapter 6 - This is pretty good so far, should be a quick fast-paced read. I'm not sure if I'll continue the series, but based on this book I need to. I don't think I've read the other authors before.
This was fun and quick. I really enjoyed the characters despite the tropes I usually dislike. I will be reading the rest of the series, the setting is nice. I think the length helped keep the story moving, no lulls.
Recommend to others: Yes. This is one of the better Brenda Jackson stories, she has a lot and most are very good.
Hopewell General 1. In the Doctor's Bed (2011) Brenda Jackson 2. The Surgeon's Secret Baby (2011) Ann Christopher 3. Romancing the M.D. (2011) Maureen Smith 4. Case of Desire (2011) Jacquelin Thomas
I ... am not sure if I should rate this as 2 or 3 stars ... I did like the couple wanted to make things work - but I REALLY didn't like that she was his intern. Just ... dude. No [Couldn't you have waited for a bit?] I guess I should've looked up how long an internship is anyway - but isn't it "just" a year? And they were past that or close? ...
Also WTF was up with [Nurse Tsang? ... Not 100% on the spelling since this was an audiobook ... but if I'm right and it was Tsang, it also makes me feel definitely some type of way one of the - few? - Asian characters in a BJ book is ... an evil bitch...] Also ... I wonder if anyone else also thought maybe that nurse was having an affair with [the chief of staff?]
I think ... ugh. Usually I listen to Ms. Jackson's books at least twice, sometimes 3x in a row but ... the intern thing REALLY bothered me. Which I guess answers my question - 2 stars.
:| D ... +?
I did like parts of their relationship - the not being judgey -> although he's all "thanks for not judging me about the toy boat racing" but she was all "boys and their toys" and I DID like how
This author obviously knows nothing about medicine. Internships are not 2 years long and interns don't just float from specialty to specialty and neither do the attendings or in this case the chief resident. Surgical theaters are obsolete, no one sits around watching surgeries from above in viewing rooms. And the whole FUO thing was just laughable. Bad blood being drawn from the big toe because only an infection can cause a FUO. It's as though the author took cliches from old movies and put them in her book.
Another problem is her knowledge of the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia). How many times she called out the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Yes DC and Virginia connect or more specifically Georgetown and Rosslyn, VA connect via the Key Bridge. No one who lives in the area uses the full name. It's just Key Bridge. And the H St corridor is no where near Alexandria or Georgetown for that matter.
Also the author forgot her descriptions in one part the main character's hair goes from chin-length straight brown hair to hair down and flowing around her shoulders.
Intern Jaclyn Campbell knew having a crush on her drop-dead-gorgeous boss could get her fired. But what she does not realize is that the feelings are mutual
Head resident Lucien De Winter knows that hospital policy forbids any relationships between him and his staff but he is drawn to Jaclyn and they will eventually given in to their attraction. They agree to keep their relationship secret until they find a solution where they can openly be together.
Lucien know that this relationship could end both their careers. But love is worth the risk and he will do whatever it takes to be with the woman he loves.
I have always enjoyed hospital drama and stories surrounding the life of a doctor. I haven't read a book in quite awhile, in which I read the book in two days. I couldn't wait to get to the end. It kept me reading into the wee hours of the morning.
I have never rea d a book by Brenda Jackson and now I'm getting ready to read Hopewell General Book 2. Brenda has me hooked, and I think I might have found my favorite author. I plan on reading a lot more of her books.
Lucien is a doctor and Jaclyn boss. She's the intern. Rules are not to have relationships with other employees especially if he's the boss.
But from the moment he saw Jaclyn he knew he wanted her. Jaclyn knew she loved from. With them both not know how each other feels. One thing leads to another they are more than boss and intern. But keeping a relationship a secret is harder than they think until he realized he can lose her completely.
This was not one of my favorites. I love Brenda Jackson books (minus the cowboy series types). This one did not remind me of her writing style at all. I oftentimes kept forgetting it was a Brenda Jackson book. It had a cute yet predictable love story. I don’t think there was enough character development before they jumped into having sex and basically falling in love. It felt as though this was like a 0.5 book in a series. It had you feeling like you wanted to go back to see if you missed something. It’s a quick Saturday or Sunday afternoon read, but it’s not your typical Brenda Jackson read by any means……

Another very classy, very demure spicy romance by Brenda Jackson — Jacqueline is a resident doctor and Lucian is the head doctor and her boss. These two try their best to ignore the attraction they have for one another because the hospital they work for has a no fraternization policy. But of course lust wins per usual and Lucian makes his move by asking her out. They soon begin dating in secret but their secret doesn’t stay a secret for very long…💕
Jaclyn and Lucien worked together. He was basically her boss at the hospital. They were both attracted to each other from the moment they met but didn't act on it because of hospital policy. Then their attraction got to be too much to ignore and they began a secret affair. They were risking their careers to be together. I enjoyed this book a lot. Was very glad they found a way to get to their happily ever after.
I enjoyed this simple love story however, very different from other books that I have read from this author. I expected more fallout from the Matthew firing or something dealing with the nurse and Dr. Dudley as relationship. I enjoy the "Steele", " Westmoreland " and "Catalina Cove" series!
Wow!!! Layla has done it again. The Bennetts are Awesome. Great love story of Alice and Nate. They seems to have a forever and an ALLURING LOVE. You want be disappointed. She keeps your attention and makes you want more.
Jaclyn instantly fell in love with Lucien before he opened his mouth..Only problem is they are collegues and can not be together...She is under him as a Dr so that is a no no..But they come together secretly and stay that way til they are found out...it is a good story of love..I enjoyed it greatly
I just started reading Ms. Jackson's book. I am not disappointed at all! This book had me intrigued wondering what was going to happen next. If you can keep my attention, you did good! Ready for book two!!!!!
I'm Anxiously Awaiting the Neck Volume of this Series
In the Doctor's Bed, is wonderfully written. As my eyes flew across the pages, I could see the characters and hear their voices. I became totally immersed. I'm waiting for the next book in this series. I am hooked!
