A short-lived respite...

After bringing an end to World War III, Touma Kamijou disappears from the world. Both sides—magic and science—take time to rest and regroup. Accelerator distances himself from his troubled past and adjusts to living an ordinary life with Last Order and Misaka Worst. Meanwhile, Shiage Hamazura uses the secrets he gained in Russia as a bargaining chip and returns to Academy City to re-form Item. It seems like peace is here at last. That is, until a new group called the Freshmen bursts on the scene, forcing Accelerator and Hamazura back into contact with Academy City’s underworld…

This is not a totally new series, but rather a continuation of our fantastic story. However, making this the start of a newly titled series was a good decision, since this volume feels like an introductory volume. In fact, it is more like one of the side story volumes, especially since it does not involve Kamijou Touma.

Accelerator and Hamazura Shiage are becoming situated with their new and peaceful lives after the war, only to find that not much has changed. Accelerator still has to deal with his "brat," as well as Misaka WORST of the Third Season. Hamazura is now a proper member of the newly formed ITEM, but they still treat him like adoringly as their slave. All is well. That is, until the darkness of Academy City resurfaces under a new name.

The first half of the volume features the familiar comedic atmosphere, and enters a high-tension conflict of almost unreal Academy City technology in the second half. In other words, it is much like Volume 12 (Academy City Invasion Part 1) of the first series. I found this volume harder to invest myself in because of the technical details; I had a difficult time picturing all of the complex technology. Perhaps those better-versed in science will find this volume more interesting. However, I did enjoy the subtle character struggles and am still pumped for what's to come.

Kamachi managed to effectively solidify Hamazura and Accelerator as protagonists in the series, and this volume helps prove that. It works well as a volume that keeps you in suspense while also wondering what became of Kamijou Touma after World War 3.

I gave-up on the index novels about halfway through the series, so I am lacking in a lot details about how it ended. That being said, this novel takes place after the ending of the previous series, and WW3. The characters who played a big role in ending world war three, are trying to live a peaceful life, forces controling academy city, have other plans.

I didn't know who most of the people or events mentioned in the novel were/are. That said, it wasn't a bad novel, lots of action, and interesting plot twists. The story wasn't the best written, and confusing at times.

Interesting choice to begin your sequel/continuation series with what feels like a side volume. After World War III, it’s understandable that the series stakes have reset but the plot contained here isn’t exactly great. It’s not a terrible volume by any means, it’s just more of the same sort of shenanigans
