Anything Can Be Dangerous

Anything Can be Dangerous contains four amazing stories, plus a preview to the highly praised novel Husk, by Matt Hults. The stories

Anything can be Dangerous ~ the simple things in life can kill.
Through the Valley of Death ~ a dark vampire story that will make you remember fear.
The Finger ~ zombie literature has never been so extraordinary.
Feeding Frenzy ~ lunchtime in a place called Hell.
Husk ~ this is what people are saying about

“Matt Hults delivers a crackling, creepy tale. A fast-paced read with a generous body count, ‘Husk’ will make your skin crawl.”
—Scott Nicholson, Bestselling author of They Hunger

“Remember the first time you read Joe Lansdale’s The Drive-In, or Freezer Burn? Remember how exhilarated you felt as you tore through the pages as Lansdale kept knocking your jaw to the floor with his endless inventiveness, unexpected belly-laughs, and those even more unexpected moments of terror and pathos? Miss that feeling of being completely at the mercy of a writer’s imagination and boundless energy for his subject? Fret no more, friends—you now have Matt Hults’s Husk. This sucker is the real thing, an in-your-face, rollicking, scary, funny, and unexpectedly poignant potpourri of a horror story, an unabashed and unapologetic throwback to the early pulps infused with a vindictive modern-day sensibility that will have your head spinning and your mouth hanging open. It doesn’t get any more fun than this.”
—Gary A. Braunbeck, winner of the Bram Stoker Award and International Horror Guild Award, author of Coffin County and Destinations Unknown

“Suspenseful and gruesome, with just the right leavening of hopefulness and nod-wink humor.”
—Dr. Kim Paffenroth, Bram Stoker Award Winner for Dying to Live.

“Husk is wild, bloody, scary, action-packed, and entertaining as hell. Matt Hults seems to be having a blast telling his tale, and I had a blast going along for the ride. Great fun!”
—Jeff Strand, Bram Stoker Nominated Author of PRESSURE

"'Husk' is a chilling and relentless tale that will make you want to check your closets, lock your windows and keep an eye in your review mirror...but don't think that'll save you!"
––Fran Friel, Bram Stoker Nominated Author of Mama's Boy

“Husk is violent, intense and terrifying. The characters are as real as you and I, and every triumph is rapturous while every death is harrowing. Matt Hults proves himself as a master of the genre with his striking debut novel. It will leave you feeling skinned alive and dying for more.”
—Joel A. Sutherland, Bram Stoker Nominated Author of Frozen Blood

“I have come across some pretty mind-blowing demons on paper, on the big screen, and especially in my mind. But the ‘Husk’ Matt Hults created in this his first novel breaks all my thresholds for fear, and believe me I have built some pretty sound barriers in my time.”
—Giovanna Lagana, author of With Black & White Comes the Grey

I picked this up on a whim months ago and then it got lost in kindle lists. Compulsive kindle purchasing really does bury older acquisitions.

I don't remember what pointed me to this book, but whatever that was--thank you! Out of the four longish shorts in this collection (averaging about 30 pages apiece), one is excellent; two are great; and one is good. All are fun, well-written, and based on a single idea drawn out to absurd and entertaining lengths.

The title story is the gem of the lot and an excellent example of hyperbole. I can't give the premise away, so suffice to say that Hults hints at an adversary who just doesn't seem plausible or remotely possible in even a fictional context--and then delivers a story that runs with this idea straight into crazy territory that is ripe with images that will stay with me for a long time. I was reminded of some of the novel and superior weirdness that Erdlac achieves in his Merkabah stories.

I enjoyed reading this collection, and I will definitely keep my eye on Hults's work.

Collection of four stories that are all interesting but differ in how well written they are.

'Anything Can Be Dangerous' I found funny. Not often I'll read a story about carrier bags coming to life.

'Through the Valley of Death' was a decent story incorporating a family's accidental journey onto unsacred ground. This one was much darker than the other stories.

'The Finger' was yet another take on zombies. I can't remember much of it to be honest but I can remember being bored reading it.

'Feeding Frenzy' was a really fun story about a restaurant that only caters to the dead.

I didn't read the preview for the novel 'Husk' but will do so in the future.

A few decent stories but nothing completely mind-blowing or original.

Matt Hults'Anything Can Be Dangerous is an interesting book. The first, essentially, half is made up of 4 unique stories. The rest of the book consists of 7 previews to not only Hults' Husk, but for 3 other author's works.

Anything Can Be Dangerous is the title of the 1st story we come upon. Greg's life seems to finally be taking a turn to the positive when, suddenly, the things his mother always used to worry about started becoming reality. Yes, anything can be dangerous and you won't believe what is the source of the problem. In Feeding Frenzy, 2 friends looking into the possiblity of opening a fast food joint find themselves serving the most gruesome of customers and it doesn't seem like the place closes...for anything. The 3rd story, Through the Valley of Death, introduces us to a family who has an accident and must work their way through the woods to get to the nearby town before they freeze. Problem is the the natives of this land don't take kindly to people passing through. Finally we have The Finger, in which a two of the dregs of society attempt a get rich quick scheme that horrible backfires on them and many around them.

Overall Anything Can Be Dangerous is made up of a good group of stories. I really enjoyed Feeding Frenzy, it was very humorous with a nice touch of the squeemies. Through the Valley of Death was another favored tale, containing a nice bit of eeriness that kept me only toes as I read.

The 7 previews:

Matt Hults' - Husk
Gary Brandner’s - The Howling
Gary Brandner’s - The Howling II
Gary Brandner’s - The Howling III
James Roy Daley’s - Terror Town
James Roy Daley’s - Into Hell
Paul Kane’s - Pain Cages

The only couple of things I want to address in regards to the previews is a positive and a negative. The positive: each book that was previewed has been added to my list to read. Yep, each one grabbed my attention and I want to read more. The negative: 3 of the books were part of a trilogy and I was given a preview to all 3 parts, which means I was made aware of who from book 1 survived to make it to book 2. I didn't like that...I don't like knowing ahead of time who will survive.

"Anything Can Be Dangerous" was the last book I read in full in 2011.

It is a collection of short stories in the horror genre.

As of right now (Jan. 1, 2012) you can buy the kindle edition for $0.00

There are 4 full stories, plus a preview of a novel called "Husk." I read the stories, but not the novel preview, as I had no interest in it.

The stories in this collection are:

1. Anything can be Dangerous: In the title story of this collection you find out that even something as simple as a recycled plastic baggie can become dangerous, even deadly. Plastic bags are suddenly rising up, and humans are horribly outnumbered. This was an interesting tale, up until the end which I did not like.

2. Through the Valley of Death: A family finds themselves stranded on the side of a snowy road. In trying to make their way to a city before dark they decide to travel through the woods, instead of down the road. They find themselves on Sacred Ground, and the spirits there are not happy about it.

3. The Finger: My least favorite of the 4, in this one a man takes the finger of a cadaver, planning on "finding" it in his lunch and making a profit. Unfortunately he accidentally swallows the finger, and since this is a horror story you can be certain that didn't end well.

4. Feeding Frenzy: This one is my absolute favorite of the 4. Two men are looking at a restaurant with plans to buy it, only to have a "customer" show up and demand service. Now they are trapped in Fast Food Hell with only two rules...."Feed the Customer, Obey the Rules!"

This is an anthology of four exemplary novellettes/novellas. The four stories manage to hit the high notes of the horror genre -- zombies, vampires, post-apocalyptic, and gore/slasher.

It has been awhile since any horror story made me flinch, but "The Finger" had me kind of vomiting in my mouth for a moment. This story is perfect balanced against "Through Valley of Death" where a family wanders where they shouldn't. Then there is the hysterical humor (as in crazed laughter) of "Feeding Frenzy" juxtaposed against the hero and his memories of his mother in "Anything Can Be Dangerous."

Delightful e-book, currently for free from both Barnes and Noble and Amazon, with a plethora of free samples in the back. Definitely a keeper, and I can't wait to read the samples.

Anything Can Be Dangerous was, all in all, a fun read.
It contains 4 short stories and a few previews.
I enjoyed the shorts as follows:

Anything Can Be Dangerous-3*
This one reminded me of early King shorts. Does anyone remember The Mangler about an ironing machine gone wild? Well this is plastic gone wild.
Feeding Frenzy-3*-Fast food and a fast paced read.
Valley of Death-4*-This story starts off with a stranded family on a deserted road. Into the valley they will go.
The Finger-5* Totally awesome, imaginative and fun!

Altogether this averaged out to 3.75 stars, so 4 it is.
I think this collection served the author as a great way to reel in new readers. It worked for me!

The first story from which the book has it's name, was very strange - and in the WTF way, not in the 'oh I want to learn more about this' way. It would have been good if it had stopped like a quarter of the way, then it would have been just remotely creepy. As it is now, it's drawn out and a little too Koontz'esque for my taste (a.i. man with gun in one hand, and a woman swooning on his other arm - takes up battle with supernatural phenomenon) -Dare I say Mary-Stu?
The rest of the book is preveiws of other books by other authors, and the few I read there was some that sounded like they could be okay, like the cops and the creepy ritual killer (v. Se7en). Anywho, it got real old, real fast to read snippets of books that I am never gonna buy, and I think it's a complete ripoff to call this a book at all... I KNOW I downloaded this for free for kindle, and I KNOW it says sampler on the front - so I shouldn't complain - but free doesn't mean horseshit, it means you bring your A game to reel in new readers. *ding dong shame! shame! ding dong*
...and Matt - more isn't better.

Really inventive and fun short horror tales. Every one of them had a good twist of offbeat humour that put it way off the beaten path. Great fun, and I'll look for more from the author.

The book contains four stories, then some sampler chapters from larger works. I didn't read these latter, because I don't read samplers - ever. I like to get the whole experience when reading a book for the first time. But the four stories were excellent.

'Finger' probably nailed it as my favourite (pun intended). Delightfully twisted!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

These are dark, disturbing, and interesting stories about things that go bump in the night and things that can and will kill you. The action, characters, situations, and tension is top notched. These stories will have you thinking good lord.

This collection of short stories from Matt Hults is a free read and serves as an introduction to his work. It's a quick read as there are only four stories. In addition, there are a number of preview chapters for other authors on the same press. An interesting marketing idea to say the least.

As for Hults' stories, I had mixed feelings as I read through them. He has a particular style of writing that I did not always feel in tune with--the humorous element to horror. The first story, "Anything Can Be Dangerous" is a perfect example. It's about killer plastic bags. Yes, you did read that correctly. Now this has the potential to be extremely dark or extremely silly. Hults actually pulled it off, but there was nonetheless a strain of humor that broke the surface too often for my taste. "Feeding Frenzy" was an interesting zombie tale. "Through the Valley of Death" was the shining star of the collection. "The Finger" closes out the collection and this one's strong on the humor/ horror blend.

As for the novel previews, I will not even give most of them space here. Violent, gore, rape, torture. I stopped after the first few paragraphs for most. Read this one for the Hults stories. They're worth the free download.

You have to comb through many a poorly-written free book to find a gem like this. "Anything Can be Dangerous" is a definite positive addition to the horror genre and Matt Hults is a breath of fresh air. I read this in spare moments between writing and editing my own novella and I'm glad I took the time.

The titular story will grab you, but "Feeding Frenzy" will squeeze the air out of you (by far my favorite). If you have to call any one story weak, I'd say it was "Through the Valley of Death" but even that one had a creep factor to it. And "Finger" was as different a horror story as I've ever read.

When I buy my next book, Hults will definitely be on the short list.

I decided to read this before starting the author's novel Husk. This collection contains four short stories (which in my estimation average about 40 pages each) as well as a sample from Husk and some other books from the publisher. It's a nice package - the shorts are long enough so that you feel you've read something before the samples start. They also demonstrate that Matt Hults is one sick puppy, and if these are any indication, I'm going to enjoy Husk. His twisted imagination is right up my alley.

I didn't read through the entirety of all the samples, but there are a couple that got my attention, and I plan to follow up and read those novels.

A collection of 4 shorts.
My ratings as follows:

Anything Can Be Dangerous: What would you do if you found out your recyclables hate you? 1 Star
Feeding Frenzy: Location is everything when you are looking for a spot for your new business venture. 3 Stars
Through the Valley of Death: It's bad enough that you get into a car accident in the middle of nowhere, but just be careful what path you take when you go to find help. 3 Stars
The Finger: Think you know the perfect get-rich scheme? Well, you might want to re-think your plans. 3 Stars

Downloaded as a sampler pack via Barnes & Noble...fo' free!

I downloaded this book to my Kindle. It's the perfect book to read on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Alright, it's pretty good to read it anytime. Matt Hults has a wonderful imagination and knows how to put it down on paper. Criticism, sure...some of the stories weren't long enough. Some of them should have been full length novels so I could see how the protagonist managed to get out of some of the incredible situations he found himself in. Thumbs up, Matt Hults & Amazon.

I was pleasantly surprised by this freebie (got it at Barnes & Noble for Nook). Four shorts and a preview of a novel. Really enjoyed the first three stories, the last short was my least favorite but it was still entertaining. Some nice creepiness and originality here. Books like this make sifting through all the not so great freebies worth it.

2.25 Stars It was alright

A creative mind indeed. But were they scary? Not really. The creep factor popped up in The Finger. There plastic bags that killed, a restaurant that demanded you follow the rules or else, cursed grounds that required a sacrifice, and a finger.
Not a fan of shorts, but 1 or 2 will be remembered for originality alone.

A decent collection of horror stories. My favorite is probably the first, Anything Can Be Dangerous, about killer plastic shopping bags. Sounds stupid, I know, but it is original. The Finger gave me the creeps. Especially when the character in the story swallows the severed finger. Almost made me want to choke.

Chilling, Somewhat Hilarious Stories

These stories are beautifully detailed and occasionally hilarious. Some of the endings are terrifying, some cliff-hangers, and the worst ones are tragically chosen without any specific saying as to whether or not it will happen (ie the one with the finger).

"Greg knew that for every warning label ever made - especially the absurd ones - there was someone who'd done what if cautioned against and lived to sue about it. Consequently, everything needed a warning label these days, or a sign, or a sticker.

Great stories. All four start good, two struggle a bit near the end, one doesn't offer a proper conclusion. Still, very enjoyable.

The great ones: Feeding Frenzy (easily the best of the four), Through the Valley of Death
The good ones that need work: Anything Can Be Dangerous, The Finger

Not your ordinary horror short stories

First time reading this genre, I might say they were very interesting shorts. The kind of stories that would leave you without an end for you to use your imagination.

Scary Fun

What a pleasant surprise this anthology was. The author had me from the first page and I couldn't stop reading. My favorite of the 4 short stories is "Feeding Frenzy." It was scary fun and refreshingly original. I'll definitely be reading all Matt Hults books!
