Given the growing interest in understanding the meaning, manifestations, analyses and implications of racism in North/South relations, White Saviorism in International Development seeks to remedy the shortcomings of the development studies literature on the prevalence of White Saviorism in Western development initiatives in the Global South. The volume comprises theoretical chapters, testimonies, stories and lived experiences from 19 contributors from across the Global South. With sensitivity and intelligence, these practitioners and academics create a tapestry that unveils the implicit and explicit forms of White Saviorism in international development.
This was a wonderful addition to the discourse around white saviorism in international development from the context of those most impacted by white saviorisms harms/failings.
The essays were grouped in three sections—the academic, the personal, and what next, and all looked at some part of white saviorism, whether that was at a personal individual level or at a systems level
An insightful collection of essays that spotlights Global South experiences with white saviourism and its various forms of manifestation in the aid / development sector. A must read for all students of international development (hopefully before they start) and practitioners.
This was such a fascinating exploration of a topic I didn’t know nearly enough about. It’s a genre I’m unfamiliar with, but I read this book for a college class and feel I have gained a lot of perspective from it. Definitely recommend!
Thought-provoking collection of essays and contributions on a timely issue. Poor editing and varying quality halted my progress: it took me months to finish this book as I turned to other reads in the meanwhile.
