Sometimes Inspector William Fox likes to go off script, like when chasing gangsters in his cigarette boat on the St. Lawrence River. For one case, the RCMP officer with a penchant for luxury fashion finds himself teamed up with FBI Special Agent Patrick Reilly, an Irish lad who prefers absinthe to Guinness. The pair travel overseas to track down members of a gang who have kidnapped Tracy Jordan, an American academic and archeologist with teenage ties to William. In China, Tracy has been stealthily searching for evidence of Admiral Zheng He’s 15th-century connections to the area that would later be known as Nova Scotia. It’s here that Tracy and her team discover what might be Ming dynasty artifacts transported by Zheng He’s “massive treasure ships” left behind on Mi’kmaq peoples’ ancestral land.

Outfoxed is also a political thriller, diving deeply into the power struggles of the Communist Party of China and its shadowy operatives. It wades into the Fox family’s political past in South Korea, where a tragedy took place that still haunts William years later.

While reading this book, so many things made me want to read it even more. Here are some of my favorites from this book: First, the novel's meticulous portrayal of Chinese history and its spotlight on Admiral Zheng's importance were both gratifying and educational. It brings to light the significance of inclusive representation in literature. The author's writing style, with frequent shifts between third-person points of view from different characters and sides, creates tension reminiscent of Hollywood action blockbusters. This style enhances the reading experience and would lend itself well to adaptation for the screen. And it would leave no room for confusion among the readers. This book's cover got my attention the most. The author did a great job on this book and made my love for historical fiction and adventure stronger with this fantastic book of his.
Having stated my likes for this book above, I found no errors while reading and had no dislikes whatsoever. This book is professionally edited. I would love to thank the author for his efforts in research and for allowing the readers to travel with him to this amazing country through this book.

Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure is the first book by author Peter Thomas Pontsa. Looking for a suspense thriller with political overtones? Then this is the book for you! From the sounds of it, this book could potentially become a series. It will be intriguing to find out if we will be seeing Inspector William Fox again in the future. Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure has a simplistic cover. A black background sets the stage for the rest of the cover. A rugged looking man looms out of the background holding a gun. A serious expression graces his face. Taking up the other portion of the cover is a large Chinese coin. This is a clear depiction of what readers can expect. A Chinese treasure waiting to be discovered, and that many will die for. Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure is author Peter Thomas Pontsa’s first book. This novel will introduce readers to William Fox, an Inspector in the RCMP. The story starts off with an unfolding environmental issue. It appears to be a straight-forward assignment for Fox to go out, help run patrol, and keep the chaos to a minimum. Sounds pretty basic, right? Well, it is...until it isn’t. Cue the drama in epic fashion when Fox and his partner are targeted by a couple of Chinese gangsters. So, a simple situation that should have been a breeze turns into an epic media blitz that gets Fox in trouble, his boat shot up, and him on desk duty. Well, someone had to take the fall for a boat being exploded and chaos on the water, and Fox is it. Cue the ire, right? Outfoxed proceeds forward by shifting to Tracy Jordan in China. She’s on a quest for information, and the quest is a dangerous one. If the true reason for her time in China is discovered it could land her in a dangerous place, so she has to take “delicate” steps to discover the information she’s looking for. What information is that? The truth about Admiral Zheng He. Did he actually touch ground in the America’s before Columbus? If so, where exactly and why were the records hidden or destroyed? Outfoxed builds comes out the gate strong with healthy doses of drama and tension with the waterfront escapades. While the situation with Tracey trotting around China brings a touch of drama, the storyline mellows out for a minute. It’s expected that something will happen with her since she has a tail. It has to be admitted though, that while this book has some expected elements it is still surprising that basically not one person steps up to help Tracy when she’s abducted. Does this happen often for the people to just stand by and watch? In the immediate moment she’s terrified, but she’ll find a moment to rediscover her courage and assert herself...for better or worse. As Outfoxed proceeds, the storyline slows down and begins the building process. This story is told from the third person perspective and shifts between a myriad of characters. William Fox is the primary character of the story, but Tracy is a close second followed by Ru, the Chinese gangster. There aren’t any clear indications of who the story is following from chapter to chapter. You could be with Fox one minute, and then the story will shift to Tracy, Ru, or one of the other characters who work to bring this story to life. The dynamic cast of characters in this book help bring it to life and create a realistic drama that will draw readers in. Outfoxed has a slow start, but gradually builds to a gripping scenario that author Pontsa ensures readers will be glued to the pages to find out what happens next. With Fox racing to rescue Tracy from the grips of Ru and the triad, there is more going on than meets the eye. Chinese politicians are making plays and plans to exact revenge for a compatriot who was lost due to “meddling” thanks to the CIA. William Fox is an interesting character who comes off as an excellent officer to the Canadian force. He works hard, and walks the line. There will be moments when you think that he’ll blur the lines of the law in order to get results, but that’s never the case. Author Pontsa showcases Fox as a doggedly determined man intent on getting his man, while struggling with “demons” from his past. When author Ponsta promises readers globe-trotting, he absolutely delivers. Readers will jet around the world from locations in Canada, to China, to locations in the United States throughout Outfoxed. The characters skip from dangerous situation to dangerous situation as Tracy Jordan strives to discover answers to her questions. The Chinese government is looking to clean house and to bring to heel those they choose to keep on board. Wondering if there is romance to be found in Outfoxed: A William Fox Adventure? The answer is – yes. Readers will get some background when it comes to William and Tracy. As teens romance was budding, but due to a tragedy that took place in South Korea, it drove them apart. We know what you’re thinking – he must have failed to protect her and it cost them their friendship. Well, close, but not quite. The romance angle between William and Tracy is rushed. They haven’t spoken in over 15 years, but when they “reconnect” things move in a whirlwind fashion. Most of the story is done in a realistic fashion, but this is where things divert and take on an unrealistic element. We would have preferred a more steady pace for their relationship to redevelop and evolve over the storyline. There is plenty of time for it to do so, so it’s a touch strange for it to be so rushed. This book has a lot of detail. Overall, that’s a good thing and something that readers will enjoy about this story. However, some details in this story weren’t necessary to the storyline. In places, details are added that seem to just be thrown in there for no specific reason. Instead of adding to the story, they became more of a distraction and occasionally took us out of the story. The first half of Outfoxed: A William Fox Adventure is slow to moderately paced, but when the book hits the 50% mark the story really ramps up and we are off the races. The drama ramps up with shoot outs, kidnappings, shady lawyers, and Chinese officials with personal vendettas. It’s delicious chaos that will grab readers by the eye-balls and keep them page-turning to find out how it all goes down. As Outfoxed: A William Fox Adventure draws to a close, author Pontsa drops hints that this will probably not be the last time readers see William Fox. Things are not going to end on a “nice, clean” note. Nope, there are clues that some of these characters will be back. This is something that we would be absolutely amenable to. Will it happen? We’ll have to wait and see. Readers who enjoy suspense filled books, with globe-trotting elements and plenty of drama, will not want to miss out on Outfoxed: A William Fox Adventure. Readers will get to know William Fox, get lots of details, and a lot of tension that will be found within these pages. When the past and present collide in just the right way, you get a good book like Outfoxed.
Pros:
• Action packed novel • Intriguing storyline • Dynamic cast of characters • Lots of drama • Potential for more William Fox adventures
Cons:
• Romance angle is rushed and not allowed to develop naturally. • Some details are unnecessary and distract from the overall story. • The “political past” in South Korea is a blip in the story, and needed more attention and definition if it is supposed to be so “impactful” on Fox that it haunts him and causes him to sacrifice relationship(s).
That was an ambush. A distraction. And we fell for it’ - A sizzling new series opens!
Canadian author Peter Thomas Pontsa has retired from his successful career in the dental industry having published articles in dental journals, and now he makes his debut as a novelist, having studied creative writing at the University of Waterloo. He is a member of Wordsmiths and an associate member of Crime Writers of Canada. Racing British sports cars and being a student of taekwondo enhance his rich life.
Pontsa quite successfully launches a new adventure hero in what appears to be the launch of an ongoing series. The book’s cover art rings true as does the primary character’s introduction: Inspector William Fox ’was thirty-two years old and handsome in a rugged way with balanced features, brown hair, and eyes that unmasked an inner calm and intelligence…William’s yellow RCMP jacket fell open over his black jeans exposing his standard-issue Smith & Wesson sidearm.’ Smart, savvy, and unique, Fox carries the reader through a mesmerizing tale, distilled as follows: ‘Sometimes Inspector William Fox likes to go off script, like when chasing gangsters in his cigarette boat on the St. The tale involves the RCMP and FBI chasing the Foo Dog Triad operating in Hong Kong, mainland China, and New York City. Like Tracy and Kevin Steptoe, a Mi’kmaq lawyer, the gangsters are after the ancient Chinese treasures. The adventure wades into the Fox family’s political past in South Korea, where a tragedy took place that still haunts William years later.’
This debut novel has all the elements required for initiating a political thriller series, placing before the reader apt insights into China’s government, well-defined characters and events, and one superb new primary figure in William Fox! Highly recommended I Voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book

“Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure” by Peter Thomas Pontsa tells the story of an overzealous history researcher. She unwittingly finds herself at the mercy of the Chinese Triads during her quest for answers about a historical event.
The narrative reveals a session between Inspector William Fox and Special Agent Patrick Reilly, who are preparing to set out on an international quest to free a kidnapped American. Fox is good with martial arts and gun action but has constantly gone off-script during his job. They are about to encounter deep indecency and a well-hewn network of cruel leaders, who will not easily relent in formulating hideous strategies for acquiring priceless Chinese artifacts. Here, the officers’ agility, resilience, brilliance, and skill will be pushed to the ultimate test, particularly when past events come knocking.
Earlier, Tracy Jordan had enrolled at Nanjing University’s School of Liberal Arts, where she hoped to study classic Chinese literature, classical documents, and ancient Chinese history. She, however, had plans to secretly research the Ming dynasty to try and unveil a puzzle that may have been hidden from the public eye about Admiral Zheng He, by his deputy Wang Jinghong. Hints from an existing diary by Jinghong led Tracy to a mosque, where she located the crucial resource.
While researching, she caught sight of strange people following her, but couldn’t tell whether her research had anything to do with them. Having found the diary, she was all up for a trip to New York, where she hoped to safely study her findings. Unknown to her, she shared the same passion with a gang getting closer to her every minute.
This is a deeply fascinating tale that reveals a hero whose manner of thought, charisma, and skill set him apart in today’s class of adventure publications. "Outfoxed" is a rollercoaster of a read, with unexpected twists and turns that keep the suspense high throughout. Peter Thomas Pontsa's storytelling is gripping, and his ability to blend elements of action, mystery, and political thriller makes this novel an exciting and compelling choice for readers who enjoy high-stakes adventures.
In "Outfoxed," author Peter Thomas Pontsa takes readers on an exhilarating journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected alliances. At the heart of the story is Inspector William Fox, an RCMP officer with a penchant for luxury and a knack for going off script. When a kidnapping case involving ancient Chinese treasures and international gangsters arises, Fox finds himself teaming up with FBI Special Agent Patrick Reilly, a charming Irishman with a taste for absinthe.
Pontsa masterfully blends elements of adventure, mystery, and political intrigue, as Fox and Reilly traverse the globe in pursuit of the elusive Foo Dog Triad. From the bustling streets of Hong Kong to the ancient ruins of mainland China, and the urban jungle of New York City, the duo faces danger at every turn as they unravel the complex web of deceit and betrayal.
What sets "Outfoxed" apart is its rich tapestry of characters and meticulously researched plot. Tracy Jordan, an American academic with ties to Fox's past, adds depth to the narrative as she embarks on a quest to uncover ancient treasures linked to Admiral Zheng He's legendary voyages. With its captivating storyline, dynamic characters, and immersive setting, it is a must-read for fans of crime thrillers and political dramas alike. Pontsa's debut novel heralds the arrival of a talented storyteller.
This was such an incredible action thriller. The shifting perspectives between this cast of characters helped highlight the international intrigue that the narrative brought to life, and the fast-paced atmosphere kept the feeling of adrenaline pumping through the reader’s veins as the plot began to reveal itself. The tension was felt heavily early on, as with the protagonist’s encounter on his boat or when Tracy finds herself having to evade locals looking to imprison American travelers, especially those who begin to seek out information regarding ancient treasures.
However, for me, the heart of this thriller came from the balance of high-octane action with nuanced personal character development, especially when William Fox’s past and present began to collide. The way William’s previous life growing up begins to seep into his present and the conflict this brings into his life, as well as the intrigue, and the way the larger plot uses this personal development to add to the stakes at play made this so enjoyable to read as a fan of the genre. The imagery and emotional depth of these characters’ backstories and chemistry together allowed the reader to truly connect to the character and the journey as a whole.
The Verdict
Thrilling, heart-pumping, and entertaining, author Peter Thomas Pontsa’s “Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure” is a must-read international mystery and suspense thriller filled with action, adventure, and romance. The twists and turns will keep the reader hanging onto the author’s every word, and the author does a wonderful job of leaving just enough breadcrumbs or loose ends to allow room for more adventures for fans of the next great international action hero in the literary world.
The riveting adventure/action book written by Peter Thomas Pontsa Outfoxed: An Inspector William Fox Adventure deftly combines aspects of Chinese history, espionage, and Indigenous Canadian representation. The primary characters, Inspector William Fox and FBI Special Agent Patrick Reilly, set out on a global mission to free American scholar and archaeologist Tracy Jordan from kidnappers who are fascinated by ancient Chinese artifacts and have connections to Admiral Zheng He's storied expeditions. In addition to the exciting hunt for criminals, the book delves into intricate political situations, intimate familial bonds, and diversity in culture.
I found myself wanting to read more for a variety of reasons. Among the book's highlights are the author's meticulous depiction of Chinese history and her emphasis on Admiral Zheng's significance; both were enjoyable and instructive. It highlights the significance of inclusive writing representation. The narrative approach employed by the author, which frequently switches between third-person perspectives from multiple characters and factions, results in a gripping read that is evocative of Hollywood action flicks. I was mainly drawn to this book's cover. The plot was completed perfectly because I didn't think any parts needed to be explained further.
Since nothing in this book disappointed me, I'm giving it five stars. Readers who enjoy mystery, adventure, and historical fiction should pick up this book, in my opinion.
An RCMP Inspector teams with an FBI Special Agent to track down a kidnapping victim and combine forces with police and security forces world wide. Pontsa does a great job in filling in details not all readers would be familiar with, as well as making settings come to life. Such as Newfoundland, Canada and cities in China, the U.S. and Canada. It also raises questions about how well we know our own history and if things are possible that we have no oral or written history of.
An international thriller at it's finest! Pontsa delivers a debut novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next twist then ties everything together at the end with a bow - yet keeps room in the story line for a sequel or two! Which I look forward to reading!
I was excited to read this book, having enjoyed the last Inspector Fox book I was given. I unknowingly jumped into the second book (Sanctity of Freedom) before reading book one (Outfoxed); either way, I enjoyed both books.
Like Sanctity of Freedom, chapter 1 starts with a bang and grabs the reader’s attention. Having read the second book first, I found it interesting to read how the relationships began. Inspector Fox became acquainted with Patrick Reilly in Outfoxed, and the relationship was strengthened in Sanctity of Freedom, much like many of the other relationships in the series.
The book has a good balance of description and dialogue, helping the reader travel the globe with the characters. There is action and intrigue throughout as the author intertwines multiple storylines into one exciting book.
If you enjoy well-written cop books, this is a great one! Once you read one Inspector Fox, you will want to keep reading.
An excellent debut novel. It's clear Peter Pontsa devoted significant research for his engaging crime mystery. Using scenes across Canada and parts of Asia, he created a quick-paced and satisfying read. Looking forward to a sequel!
