This was a solid 2.5 for me. The plot went a little too fast for my liking. I had a hard time connecting with the characters. There just wasn't enough time spent on building things up. I was confused when the POV would change mid chapter. I would highly recommend reading the TW on these if you decide to read. There are scenes involving torture, references of kidnapping and other traumatic experiences.

Lynn has been recruited by the CIA to live on base with a set of soldiers who works high level missions. She meets her new team of nurses and the soldiers she will be working with. All of them seem very nice and social except for the one they call Butch. She gets called in to the boxing ring after Butch has broken his comrades arm due to being caught off guard. She is intrigued by him. Why is he the way he is?

Butch has shut people out of his life. The only person that he is kind of sort of let in is his BF Oliver who he still works with. Butch has been through hell and was never able to make it to the other side besides being alive. He has terrible nightmares and accidentally hurts people when caught off guard. He has tried therapy that hasn;t worked but then Lynn moves to the compound and he finds himself opening up about his experiences. He finds himself feeling more settled when they sleep next to each other. He finds himself trusting someone for the first time in a long time.

All of that comes crashing down when Lynn betrays him in the worst way, but after she goes through a heartbreak he realizes he still wants to explore what they have together. But what will her consequences be from her actions? All that is explored in book 2 which to be honest I am not sure I will read due to my never ending TBR list.

Like I said, I didn't feel invested. The plot went way too fast for me. I found myself getting confused. I do want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

♤ ARC Review ♤

Book: Demons in your mind
Author: Jessica Girke
Rating: ☆☆☆☆☆/5
Releasing: May 2nd

Our mind is a scary place. Many of us face fears, dark thoughts and many other "symptoms" that prevent us from seeing the beauty in life. And this happens even without a strong trigger.

Think about what it would be like for a trauma, a horrible time that felt like hell to give rise to post-traumatic syndrome.

Nate Sheppherd, former SEAL has been living with post-traumatic syndrome for eleven years, his life is not easy at all, let alone rosy. And even if he survived after everything that happened all those years ago, there are moments when he wishes he hadn't.

Nightmares... Habitual actions that bring back memories and with it fear sets in... The desire to close in and keep away from those around... Nate - Butch, he lives and yet he doesn't even if his greatest wish is to be able to put the past behind him and be happy.

Oliver, his friend since they were SEALs and his colleague now - when they both work for the CIA - is the only one who knows what happened, having his own demons and feeling somewhat guilty, but still always there for him. Only until a new female doctor appears at the CIA headquarters who will live in the compound 24/7 and with whom, willy-nilly, Nate ends up meeting and talking (at first short and to the point, leaving the impression that he is a grumpy man).

Lynn Summers accepts the opportunity to work for the CIA, she is open-minded and eager to make friends, to help as much as she can - whether as a doctor or as a person.

After a night in which she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, she is forced to sit on the bar for a while, unable to practice, but even then she is not in vain. She notices from her first days there and from her first encounters with Nate that he struggles with "demons" not only when he goes on a mission, but also at every moment with the demons in his head. With time on her hands and some psychology classes, she jumps to the man's aid and convinces him to accept, to trust her hoping that the nightmares and everything will stop.

Can she help him and be the person to finally give him the happiness he's been looking for? The answers to this question can only be found by reading this wonderful story, broken from reality.

I didn't know what to expect when I started reading the book and the beginning was quite slow, it didn't reveal much and I had no idea what was going to happen. But with every word, fragment, page, chapter, the book caught me in its nets and I wanted more and more.

Why?
Well, there are so many reasons…
• I came across such a well-documented story, both in the medical field, but also in the military and CIA
• gave me a Grey's Anatomy vibe and throughout the reading - thanks to the author and the edits on the profile - I had Sebastian Stan and Nina Dobrev in mind for Nate and Lynn respectively
• four characters so real and torn from the present, two budding couples with a healthy relationship and a natural progression, feelings that felt so real and characters' experiences that leapt off the pages and seeped into my veins
• flashbacks from the past that brought tears to the corners of my eyes and fear in my soul, a lump in my throat and difficulty in reading - what the main character went through was not easy at all
• unexpected events that simply take you by surprise
• and finally, such cute moments that reach your heart and bring a smile to your face (Nate and Lynn have a slow-burn and feelings that develop so beautifully and the way they hold one to each other, where they fear for each other and how they want to be there for each other, it's all so pure and heartwarming)

I want to thank you for providing this ARC!

I really liked this book, I went to read it without having any idea what it was and I couldn't have been more surprised.

From the beginning, we can see the complicity that exists in that compound, the friendship between Nate and Oliver, Jakob's companionship and good humour, Marta's authority, but also her care for those agents and Oliver in particular. When we add Lynn as a resident doctor, she is well welcomed and her help makes some things change for the better.

The complicity and love that grows between Nate and Lynn was very good to see, the way she manages to understand him even without having all the information, the way he cares about her, but above all his internal battle to improve her PTSD and how she found ways to help with his nightmares and traumas. Watching their love grow was special and intense.

I admire the precision with which the various topics are covered, from any medical procedure to the different operations of the CIA, without becoming boring or overly descriptive, but inserted into the story and easy to understand.

what didn't i like? how am i supposed to wait until 2024 to find out what happens to Nate and Lynn.

This is a military/doctor story that follows the lives of Nate and Lynn! The amount of research this author had to do when it came to the medical and military topics was crazy and she did it great! This is definitely a different book than I have read in a long time and is in third person gods eye view. This is not a romance, more a military book with a love story that enfolds and it’s best to go in expecting that.

5 FREAKING STARS

I'm an emotional trainwreck, tears are falling as i write this!

This book is a masterpiece, Oh My God! Jessica did an I N C R E D I B L E job writing this.

even though this is written in 3rd person POV, it's actually so easy to read and follow the story, it has a diary/journal style!

Nate and Lynn my babies, they have my heart and soul! My heart is breaking for both of them i just need to give them an enormous hug!

The hell Nate was through really took a toll on me, i felt so sorry , sad and broken, he didn't deserve any of it! My baby, love him to the moon and back!

Lynn, sweet angel, i don't care what happened, i love her so much!

The way i could see them together even from that first moment they met, i could see Nate warming up to her and feeling confused about it!

The first kiss, the first hug and that movie scene is literally my fave scenes ever!

Nate and Lynn already live in my head rent free!

I can't recommend this book enough! Run and grab your copy!

Thank You Jessica for the ARC 🙏🏻 can't wait for the next one 🤍

📖 Demons In Your Mind 🖊Jessica Girke
Nate Sheppard is a CIA agent and former Navy SEAL. He has a mysterious past which is the cause of PTSD and the realistic nightmares he gets. His colleagues are aware of his experience, but not the new doctor, Lynn Summers, who starts working for the CIA.
Seeing his aloofness, grumpy nature and lack of communication, the young and ambitious doctor wants to help the agent overcome the panic attacks and nightmares he struggles with.
Working for the CIA 24/7 and living in the same place as Agent Sheppard, she searches for a way to crack his armor and help him…
The characters are very well developed and the reader can easily understand their actions and their predicaments…
The book is written in the 3rd person, and there is a good sense of humor in the dialogues. It is apparent that the author is well versed in medical terms and procedures for mental and physical health.
The story is so interesting, emotional and heartbreaking, but you should know that it involves serious topics and possibly check the warning triggers...
.
Thank you Jessica for the ACR. I look forward to your next book ❤️

I enjoyed and loved this book. The author did so good in writing this.

I enjoyed going through Nate’s and Lynn’s journey together. It was horrible learning about his past, but I am so happy he finally learned to love. Learned to feel again.

Lynn helped him with that. The ending was too cute. And I cannot wait until the next book comes out.

I never read a Agent/Doctor type book before. So this is my first. I went in not really knowing what this book was about. I just saw the title and immediately wanted to read. And honestly, it did not disappoint. At all.

Our minds is a scary place to be. Especially after going through something horrible. It’s so easy to get lost in your mind. But it’s also great to have someone there to help pull you out. To help you overcome your fears, your demons. And I love that this story shows that.

The chemistry between Lynn and Nate was beautiful and well written.

As a former Navy SEAL, Nate Sheppard (“The Butcher”) has made lots of traumatic experiences to save his country. Working at the CIA and living with other agents that try and help him to overcome his anxiety and PTSD, he sees no hope for recovery. That is until the new doctor, Lynn Summers, joins the team.

Rating: 4,5 💙

Just brilliant!! They way Jessica wrote the thoughts and feelings of each character made me feel like I was part of the whole experience myself which made it so emotional and real for me. It was crazy how often I said to myself that this book is one of the realest things I’ve ever read. It’s heavy, emotional and you really get attached to each of the characters because of how well Jessica wrote them.

As I said, this book is rather heavy and emotional, so you should definitely check the trigger warnings before reading because it involves topics like PTSD, gun violence, kidnapping and other heavy stuff.

I really loved to read through it and slowly get to love Nate and Lynn as well as their relationship. You should definitely check it out, available on Amazon NOW. 💙

Thank you for letting me be an ARC reader 💙

Demons in your mind is a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. I had the pleasure of receiving a copy early and I'm really glad I was given the opportunity.

Jessica takes you on this really beautifully narrated story of two people finding their way to each other. Both characters, Lynn and Nate are working through their own traumas and it created a realistic piece of work that really sucked you in and made you feel.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of their story and I just know Jessica will deliver.

Nate Sheppard is a former Navy SEAL agent who now works with CIA and lives in a compound with his other colleagues. He’s suffering from anxiety, PTSD and the nightmares of his past that keeps on haunting him. Nothing have seen to help him throughout the years, but when a new doctor joins the compound, Lynn Summer is more than willing to reach out a hand to help.

It’s now up to Nate to reach out to that light and embrace it to be freed from the darkness.

Demons in your mind is filled with raw emotions that makes you really attached to the story and really feel what the characters are going through, which Jessica captured all so well in her writing! It’s heavy and deep and with that being said, don’t forget to read the content warnings since there are some heavy topics included 🤍

This book is a slow burn and closed door romance with the cute moments happening all around! Those moments are really heart warming and soft, and with the character developments?! Nat and Lynn are working so well together to help each other, to fight their own obstacles and demons in their mind, and the sweetest part is the love story that they find along the way.

Just to be clear. The love story is not the main focus here, since this book do focus more on the mental health topics and the journey to recover, but the story is still so interesting, with the twists happening, and I was deep down while reading!

So excited to read more of you Jessica!

There are books that seem made to be with us to make us understand that we are not alone. If you're expecting to read a book where he and she fall in love on the first page, this book is something else entirely. Let me start by saying that you cannot read this book without feeling empathy for the characters, you cannot remain indifferent. The aspect that I loved about this book is that it is clear that the author has not thrown out a random story but you can see that there is authenticity behind the things narrated... It is not a calm book in fact it made me feel a thousand contrasting and various things Sometimes I was moved, above all, it's nice to read someone who doesn't close his eyes to certain aspects of his own mind. The characters are well structured, there's no character of any level placed there at random. The message at the end of the book made me think a lot and I still think about it now.. .
Nate Sheppard and Lynn Summers - Ex Navy SEAL are different characters, poles apart but I have never met characters who combine and complement each other so well...

Jessica can I say? I fell in love with how you write... I can't wait to read the sequel but I want to read everything you write.

....

Make sure you check ALL triggers!

After a mission gone wrong can the Doc bring Nate back from the torture still living inside his mind.

This is book 1 of the Demons Duet.
Written in 3rd person was a little distracting at first but I soon sunk into Lynn & Nates World.
So much so I found it extremely hard to put down, I'm 100% obsessed with these two.
I love that Nates torment can only be silenced by the right person.

DEMONS IN YOUR MIND | JESSICA GIRKE

★★★★★ — ∞

LYNN ♡ NATE

❝His heart was right. It felt good to share these demons with Lynn, share the weight on his shoulders with a second person. He immediately felt lighter. Freed from the crushing emotions inside of his mind.❞

❝I wish I would have been there during that time. I wish I could have held your hand, wrapped you in my arms, kissed you, and…❞

❝Lynn leaned over him and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead while still holding his hand. A warmth filled his heart when he felt her lips on his skin, making his own lips curl upwards. This woman was driving him crazy - in the best possible way.❞

❝Every time he woke up and saw the peacefully sleeping face of his favorite doctor next to him, he smiled and felt butterflies in his stomach.❞

❝He felt like he was addicted to her presence as being with her was the only way for him to feel like a normal human being again. Not an unstable PTSD patient. Not a monster or a murderer. Just Nate Sheppard.❞

❝Lynn had become the light in his dark mind, she was the cure for his nightmares and insecurities and Butch started to not only like the doctor. He had fallen in love with her.❞

Thank you Jessica Girke for the ARC opportunity.

This is one of my all time favorite books. It was an INCREDILE debut, I can't wait to read the second book of the duet - Demons in your Heart, it is one of my most anticipated book releases. It was so well written. This was one of my most anticipated releases of this year, and it went BEYOND any expectations that I had.

She has also become one of my favorite authors too, I would read anything she writes. This is one of those books which I will ALWAYS recommend, to anyone. You don't know that you NEED a book like this until you have read it.

There are many scences which are absolutely HEARTBREAKING, and it made me love the book even more. Remember, the author will not pay for your therapy. She will only pay for Nate's

This book is raw with all the feels, I love these characters so much, them as a couple - they are so adorable - and them individually. The slow burn is also so good, I loved reading how their relationship grew.

Their relationship is so much more than just normal, which I love, it's so deep. The side characters are also interesting, especially Oliver - Nate's best friend.

I LOVE that this book revolves around Nate's mental health, how he is behaving after all he went through, the experiences and the way the emotions are described is so good.

I could literally feel the emotions that both of them were going through. The loved the small things that I discovered about them while reading the book. And the main plot twist was so good.

Nate and Lynn are so cute, adorable, they are kind of EVERTHING. I ENJOYED every second of this book. I'm also happy that this is a Duet, cuz we will get to have more of them. The representation in this book was SO GOOD.

I've read other books that have PTSD as their main subject, but none have been so explicit in the nightmares, flashbacks, and trauma. Nate went through three months of hell, but he survived because he's a hero, as Lynn said. I saw Nate as a hero even before Lynn proudly told him so.

At first I was a little confused, I must admit, because I only knew Nate with his colleagues, his friends, but then Lynn appeared and I began to read the story with even more love.

The fact that the action takes place at the "base" made the two of them interact even more, every day, even if Nate tried to avoid the others. At first I didn't understand his fear of hospitals, but then I got into the story, found out what happened to him and quickly understood why he reacted the way he did.

The demons in his mind would not let him rest. They haunted him every night. He suffered so much! 💔

But then Lynn came along and I had hope. Not only me, but also Oliver after finding out why Lynn interacted with Nate. And the fact that Nate didn't mind at all when she called him by his first name, even though everyone else called him Butch, was the moment I knew they were going to be more than friends... 🙈❤️

The story went smoothly. Nothing was rushed. Many details. Lots of details that transported me into Nate's past. It's been 11 years, but those demons that haunted his mind haven't gone away, not completely. But at least he started to have a little more peaceful nights, he didn't hurt himself, he could tell what was real and what was just a memory.

I didn't expect Nate's background to be detailed so well. I mean yeah, we needed to find out what happened to him, why he reacted the way he did. But every time I read from his perspective, it broke my heart.

But after Lynn showed up, I started to have hope that Nate would recover, that he would put the pain behind him, that he would try to put it behind him, even if she was following him every step of the way, every night, and more .

And I have to admit, I wasn't expecting what Lynn did. I understand why he did it, he had no other choice... Or he did. And I think she didn't tell any of them, precisely because she didn't want to hurt Nate anymore.

The moment Nate discovered he had more feelings for Lynn was the moment I felt something bad was going to happen.

I'm sorry you both have been through so much. Nate wasn't the only one to suffer. It was like I saw in my mind the moment Lynn collapsed, not just because she hurt Nate, but because she was hurt in the worst, most cruel way.

After they came back, after Nate talked to Lynn, I thought everything was settled between them, but then I remembered what she did, and I know that's not the end of the story, because there's a lot more to develop .

I wish I could say more, but once I remember what I read, what happened, it's hard for me to continue because I want to go back to the story and reread it. And I know it sounds exaggerated, but every time I remember the action of the book, I cry a little.

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This one tackles a lot of heavy topics like military, terrorism, death and PTSD. So definitely check trigger warnings.

I think that the overall idea of the story and the premise were good but I’m thinking that a good bit got lost in translation. These are things that a solid proofreader / editor / translator could absolutely clean up to make for a smoother read.

I struggled a little with the characters because when you meet them you sort of “hit the ground running” making it a little hard to connect. Eventually you get bits and pieces of Nate/Butch’s history and the reason behind his PTSD, and what he went through was so awful.

Something to make note of when you start this one, the names Nate and Butch are used interchangeably so that confused me for a while. Nate/Butch refer to the same person, and he is the MC struggling with PTSD.

This is definitely more of a slow burn up until the end, where the pacing starts to pick up.

I think it’s always a risk writing about government agencies of another country without having a strong background in the inner workings of that government agency. There were a few things that I struggled with because although the story is written about the US, the dialogue and behaviors of the characters just seemed a little awkward at times. The dialogue just didn’t feel authentic.
I think it’s more difficult to eloquently convey a story in a way that feels real/authentic and/or flows well when your doing 3 really hard things simultaneously: (1) writing about a government agency from a country other than yours, (2) having the story translated from one language to another and (3) dealing with heavy topics such as death and PTSD.

There is a death scene in this story that totally broke my heart but leading up to it the wording was a bit “clunky” which took away from the feeling of that scene but even still, I was crushed. So kudos to the author for really capturing the essence of that moment, despite the wording.

Being an indie author, you don’t always have the luxury of having a proof reader, editor and translator. So it makes it a bit harder to really drive the story home. Overall, I can say the idea for the book was good and with the right people in her corner this author will continue to improve in her efforts to spread awareness for heavy mental health issues.

Demons in your mind

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this, not what I expected from the title.

Grumpy sunshine, forced proximity, slow burn, military/medical trauma, mental health representation (check for trigger warnings), 3rd person POV

Nate Sheppard, active CIA agent, former Navy SEAL, has spent the last 10 years suffering from PTSD, nightmares and emotional disconnection (all really, really well written about).

Best friend Oliver McGreen has tried and tried to bring him out of his current state of mind on a more permanent basis, but lapses occur.

Based within the CIA compound at Langley, the need for a 24/7 onsite Dr sees Lynn Summers enter.

Her personality and humour wins over the team, and friendship and relationships are formed.

Wanting to heal both physically and mentally, the relationship between Nate and Lynn grows strong.

Quite the page turner, each character developing as the chapters move on, their back stories coming to light, quite the page turner.......Then the plot twist 🤯 I wasn't expecting it, with unanswered questions, I'm thankful that book 2 of the series is out next year.......

The beginning was a slow but in a good way, we get to meet the characters and understand them. The action is mostky at the end of the book.

I liked that it wasn't just a love story, I was imagining a whole different story when I read the synopsis and when I finished the book, I wasn't disappointed. I think it's original.

I love that it talks about anxiety, PTSDs I don't see that often in my readings.

I had a few problems with the physical characteristics of the characters, which are repeated too often throughout the book, it was redundant and could have been avoided. Also, sometimes the conversations between the characters didn't feel natural. And one last thing : I just have something to say : if you want to start Star Wars, start with episode IV not I haha !

However, for a first book and being an independent writer it was really great !

And the end, so sad but so well written. I wasn't expecting Lynn to do what she did and I understand how Nate feel about this but I also understand Lynn because she had no choice.

I hope Lynn and Nate can have their happy ending.

Oh my heart breaks for Nate and Lynn, even though I'm so angry with her!! She could have told ANYONE!!!!! Come on ugh!! I'm so freaking angry at her. But my heart truly hurts for Nate. He just lost everything all over again! I didn't expect my heart to break like it did, and now I need the next book asap because I need them happy. And I need Lynn to do some serious soul searching and at least realize she should have asked for help! When I first started the book, I wasn't exactly sure what the point was. Was it a romance, spy thriller? It's pretty confusing. It seems it's a little bit of both and I love how the author described PTSD and how Lynn helped Nate through it all. It doesn't go away with one session. It's time and trust. I adored the story and the development between them. There were some small issues with the writing, but the characters and overall story made those issued so small.

I really loved this book! It was like Criminal Minds meets Greys Anatomy romance. And those are two of my fave shows so of course I was super into it! But this story is so good and so realistic and raw. It really spoke to me! You can tell from the writing that Jess is so passionate about her characters. The original version has some grammar issues since English isn’t Jess’ first language, but it honestly didn’t take away from the story AT ALL! Which says a lot!! I can’t wait to read the next book!

●Miss Jessica Girke, STANDING FREAKIN OVATION 👏 👏👏! I have always been fascinated by all things CIA, FBI, terrorism and this did not disappoint! This had me crying, gasping, feel the warm and fuzzies and of course so angry. The topics in Demons In Your Mind, were so insanely realistic. I wanted to reach through and slap Lynn at times yet felt compassion. And Nate I just wanted to give the biggest freakin hug!!

Ooooooh! Demons in my Mind reminded me why I used to read military romance books religiously.
This book was amazing. I loved the plot and the characters- even the side characters were well written!

The only reason why I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because of the povs. It was a bit hard to follow at times because there was never a first person pov and the characters were often referred to as their hair or eye color instead of name.

This was a beautifully put together story. You can see the thought and care that was put into the details, and the descriptive way the author covered some very sensitive topics was appreciated. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a book that makes you think and takes your breath away at the same time

I don’t know what to say
The things that Nate went through is horrible and to be honest I don’t know how he managed to stay alive, or as alive that he was.
All the emotions in this book was so real that you could feel them. I can’t wait to read more about Nate and Lynn’s relationship and how they will overcome their problems and trauma together.

So sweet!

This book was filled to the brim with so many emotions from start to finish. This whole journey getting to love Nate and Lynn’s relationship throughout was just amazing. Watching the, each work through their traumas in their own ways was very heavy but the way Jessica tells the story along side it is just *chefs kiss*

I cannot wait for the next instalment!

Omg. My heart is broken. I can't even fully understand the 20 emotions I went through

I love the story of Lynn and Nate. I love how she was able to help him through his dark days and that he trusted her enough to open up to him. I'm glad that she was able to also help his friend Oliver.

I cried more times than I liked to admit 😅. My heart is broken reading to how Nate feels about himself with everything his been through. As some that also suffers from PTSD, I felt more connected to Nate. I understand that he felt heartbroken when he finds out what Lynn does, but honestly, I would have done the same thing

I recommend this book a 100% I can't wait for the second one to come out.

I really had a hard time connecting to the characters. But it was very well researched, and I liked the story in general.
I would say if you like this type of story with military aspects and a doc, then this is for you, but the style of writing i really liked and will be looking out for books from Miss Girke.

This book was so well written and kuddos to the author for all the information that she had to learn and know to write this story! I found myself tearing up there at the end and I can’t wait to see what happens between the two main characters in book two! Congrats on such a great book!
