Three hours into her new job, Blake Larsen stumbles across her first body. But this is no ordinary murder. The scene is elaborately staged, the victim’s head clinically severed from her shoulders. Blake is certain this isn’t the killer’s first time.
Then a second woman goes missing, a young, beautiful Army wife named Nina Crawford. When the kidnappers—claiming to be ISIS—release a horrific, videoed ransom demand threatening to livestream her execution, the attention of the entire country turns to Northern Pines. And a countdown begins. Nina has 48 hours to live.
The two cases must be connected. But why murder one woman and kidnap another? Why deliberately fan the flames of media attention? And why does the killer’s MO match two cold cases from almost a decade earlier?
As the FBI searches for terrorists, the body count rises and protesters battle on the normally placid streets of Northern Pines, only one thing is nothing about this case makes sense. Blake knows she’s in a race against time.
Blake Larsen has finished with the cleanup of the local police department a nd now finds that she will need a new job. As the whole department is being disbanded the new appointed chief has requested Blake stay to help with the reformation. The start of the new job becomes more demanding due to a missing person call on day one!!
After being dragged into her brother's case in book one, Blake becomes more proactive, accepting a leadership position with the revamped police department. But instead of the process of rebuilding the public trust, she is thrown into a high profile case involving possible terrorism and gruesome murders. She must trust her instincts and take enormous risks to bring the city justice. This series has legs.
This is a first for me. I'm 69 years old and although I've read thousands of books, and sold hundreds of thousands while writing for Harlem him and Bantam, I've never read this genre. I was very surprised and pleased. I've read the author previously and liked his work, so decided to give this book a try. Good work, Jack.
I liked this book. The pace is slower than his Jason Trapp books of course. The Jason Trapp books are my favorite. I hope he does more of them. Blake is a great character and I’m building a bond with her. Great plot.
This book had my attention from the first moment I started reading it. I think this book would be great for anyone who is a fan of LT Ryan's work. I look forward to the next installment!
This is the second book in this series. After the craziness in the first book, the North Pines Police Department is undergoing a complete overhaul. Blake is surprised to be offered a Lieutenant's position as a Detective for the neighboring Sheriff's Department. And, because things are never easy, she is faced with a brand new case on the morning of her first day. This case is a doozy. First there is a report of a missing woman. Then a body is discovered, but it is not the missing woman.....
That is how we dive into this action packed book - a serial killer or a terrorist group? Either way, it is a big deal for a small town, especially after the events of the first book.
While I enjoyed this book, I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book. There is a LOT. It was also hard for me to imagine all of this happening, especially because she truly had no experience with civilian police departments and is pretty much taking over a lead role for several different agencies. If you can suspend a certain amount of believability, then it makes things a lot easier to take. It is truly a crazy journey and the case itself is pretty crazy.
I did like the book, but I liked book 1 better.
Am I going to keep going with this series? Yep, you better believe it. We still have to figure out what happened to her parents.....
Really enjoying this series; while I was expecting Blake Larsen to be an operator like Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath, Ben Hope.... this is more like detective's stories as Alex Cross, Harry Bosch,... Plots are well set, several different suspects, ... make you trying to guess who the real criminal is. In two first books, Blake Larsen character is defined with enough details from her past and, as it hapened in the first book, second book ends putting everything in place to rool over into the next book
After book 1 of this series, I decided to go ahead and move on to the next installment. She Lies Here is full of twists and turns, dead ends and wins. I was so pleased that characters from In the Dark are continued. Having women in leadership roles is a plus. Ladies, we can rule, and the way things are going, we should. I’m moving on to the next installment. Recommended
Book 2 of the Blake Larsen series, all happens in quick time with lots of excitement and lawlessness. Blake is an amazingly strong and courageous heroine and when I read her exploits she makes me tired and feel like I have absolutely no excitement in my life. Looking forward to book 3 because I can't wait to see what Jack Slater gets ger into the next time.
Blake Larsen is all my favorite heroines rolled into one. Damn, she's gutsy. This was one of the top 3 "can't put it down" reads of the year so far. One of the other 3 was Blake Larsen Book 1. Book 2 was a very on the edge reading experience. I read it in one day. Thank you, Jack. I can't wait to wade into Book III.
This book just dragged. A few interesting pages always seemed to be followed by chapters lacking in any intrigue. There was a long chapter that involved her rescuing a dying woman from a fire that was the beginning of the end of hope for the book. Totally unrealistic.
Don’t know why I read the second book when the first was just OK. But I figured if Jack Slater has written a lot of books the first one must have been a fluke. This one was so much better. Intriguing. I had no idea if it was multiple cases and multiple suspects until the very end. A very good novel.
Fast moving, constant action; read nonstop through to end.
Nice to read followup to first episode with recognizable characters facing new challenges. Good that all levels and layers of law enforcement collaborate. Psychopaths can emerge in all parts of society.
This was a good read. Kept my interest, I didn’t want to put it down. When I did I couldn’t wait to get back to it I’m starting the next one; number 3 immediately
This is the second Blake Larsen book that I've read. I like the characters and the storyline, however, some of Blake's heroics are just too unbelievable. Will read the rest of the series because I enjoy the mystery.
The book keeps you guessing until the end. Shows how racism destroys lives for no reason other than people feeling they are superior when they absolutely are not.
If you like the first Blake Larsen book, you will like the second. Easy read that moves fast enough to keep you interested without following the "obvious, who-did-it" script.
I like series. This is a pretty good one. Lots of mystery and a some good twists and turns. I like that it's main character is a woman that has a great mind.
