In the year 2345 on the planet Kazar, a young woman, Hut-Yo Cull, grows into adulthood and learns of her parent's origins, which are a race of bounty Hunters, who were made extinct and enslaved by an intergalactic armada known as the Merciless. They are led by two brothers, Admiral Gloomis, and General Vrane. They only concern themselves with two things, a god-like creature known as MInister Milos, who also wants to rule the Universe, and a prophecy he created known as the Gunn Prophecy. In an effort to prevent the prophecy from occurring, General Gloomis travels to Earth in 1985 to stop the birth of the Jake Gunn, the prophecy's namesake. This starts an adventure that spans to several planets throughout the universe and unites Jake, Hut-yo Cull, and their allies to do battle with the Mericless and Milos
Dee Rose was born in Gary, Indiana and now resides in Denver, Colorado with his two beautiful daughters, Nadia, and Nicole. He has always wanted to write a story involving a vampire slayer from watching television shows such as Supernatural and Angel. He says, “Popcorn books are just like popcorn movies in my opinion. When my readers put down my books, I want to leave them wanting more.”
Hut-Yo Cull: The Hunt Begins by Dee Rose is a classic sci-fi theme-based story but told in a very modern way. It plays out in a non-linear fashion. The plot revolves around distant galaxies, remote planets, and far into the Universe. But as we know everything is interconnected; it comes down to earth as well.
Merciless, the terrors of the universe. They have an intention of colonizing every inhabited and commercial area in the cosmos. But according to a prophecy, they will be halted by an Earthling named "Jake Gunn" with the help of a Void walker named "Hut-yo Cull." Jeremiah, aka Jake Gunn, loses his girlfriend to the Merciless on a lovely day on earth. He pursues them ostensibly to save his girlfriend, but it's simply just a ruse to get him involved in the prophecy's fulfillment.
Hut-Yo Cull is a fierce young woman (a princess) and she is a bounty hunter by blood. Not knowing that her parents were killed by the Merciless general Vrane, she lives on an overpopulated planet with a dream of moving on to one of its moons where the elite people reside. She must win three sets of a famous game to move to the ideal moon, but it seems she has more pressing matters to take care of than planning for a comfortable future.
The story moves back and forth in time a lot but it didn't hurt my enjoyment of reading at all rather added more layers to the story and made it more interesting. Character development for Hut-Yo Cull: The Hunt Begins is very skillfully done by Dee Rose. Every character has a brief past, and the author cleverly makes spaces within the reader's mind where they can grow. The inner state of a character is easily displayed by their behavior. The fighting scenes are well-written, engaging, and make sense. As you read on, the turns and twists make the story more intriguing and compelling. What excites me most is the composition of the story, it is very smartly done by the author. The unconventional writing style is commendable.
The novel contains a wide variety of new and established science fiction tropes, including spacecraft, robots and androids, strangely shaped aliens, futuristic armor and tools, characters with supernatural cosmic abilities, and more. I appreciate how the author kept entertaining me throughout the whole book, from the very first page to the last. I am waiting for a sequel.
Except for a few typos and misspellings the book has been carefully edited. I read without any problems up until the culmination point. Overall I would happily give this book a rating of five out of five stars. Given that the book contains several sex scenes and violent events I only recommend it to the adult readers.
This was a profoundly entertaining and captivating sci-fi read. The author did an amazing job of world-building for this novel. The mythology and wealth of backstory built over the course of the novel made the universe feel so alive and vibrant on the page. This was doubly felt with the author’s use of imagery and heavy atmosphere that made these settings feel as massive and compelling as the cosmos truly is.
Yet to me, it was the amazing balance of theme and character development that made this story shine. The themes played well into the character arcs of this story, as both protagonists find themselves on a mission of revenge and justice against this alien threat of the Merciless, and yet the story plays with the idea of how thin the line between destiny and revenge a hero’s journey can take and how our personal histories can often blur that line in life, just as it does for the protagonists here. The chemistry that forms between these two people as they face this cosmic threat was great to see come to life on the page.
The Verdict
With a haunting story, rich character growth, and an entertaining mythos to get lost in, author Dee Roses’s “Hut-Yo Cull: The Hunt Begins” is a must-read sci-fi epic you won’t be able to put down. The twists and turns in this narrative are not only plentiful but so shocking that by the book’s end, readers will be shocked and eager for the author to return to this universe immediately.
No review as I abandoned this at 25% after 4 months of trying. Unfortunately, this was too graphic for my tastes. In the first couple of pages there is plenty of gore and sexual exploitation. In the next few chapters there is rape and threat of rape, and more gore such as brain matter leaking out of a hole in a skull. The plot didn’t grab me enough to make me feel comfortable with this level of violence. Although I was only several chapters in, it felt a bit formulaic with downtrodden regime trying to subvert the dominant order and bring equity to all.
This is a brilliant sci-fi novel that kept me entertained and wanting to keep reading even when it came time for me to sleep. I finished reading this so quickly, and I feel like it would be silly not to pick this book up again in the future for another ride. I loved the whole experience, found myself entertained the whole time by even the smallest of things like the immense amount of detail and great, natural sounding dialogue. This was a great book to read! 5/5 stars!
