As a huge fan of Matt Reeves’ The Batman film that released last year, I was so excited when I got this for my birthday in January this year.

It’s exactly what it says on the cover: it’s a copy of the shooting script that was used during the filming of the movie. I was pleasantly surprised when I realised there were some additional bits of dialogue, including a deleted scene between Batman and “Unnamed Arkham Prisoner” (if you know, you know!) that has actually been released and is available to view. Most of the time, however, it’s just a few lines that were cut or altered in the Final Cut of the movie. Before the script, there’s a short interview with Matt Reeves about The Batman, including the casting of Robert Pattinson as Bruce/Batman and Zoe Kravitz as Selina/Catwoman; throughout the book, there are stills in full colour of certain scenes in the film.

I will admit that I wish there had been perhaps a few more photos in the book - there were only a few and they’re mostly of Batman himself (there’s just one of the Riddler, right at the beginning, which is strange given that he’s technically the lead villain), and the pictures are quite common ones used for press releases/promotional material. I will also say that at first I found it a little disorientating to read because there were a lot of seemingly random lines and words underlined that to me didn’t make sense - by the end of the script, I think I was mostly ignoring them unless I knew from watching the film that the underlines were stressing certain words in dialogue.

If you’re a huge fan of The Batman (or just like reading shooting scripts I suppose), I do recommend the book as it has a few extra details here and there, and definitely helps to get into the mindset of the characters. Matt Reeves’ style is very clear and perfectly captures the overall feeling of the story, whether it’s his use of fast paced capital letters and short sentences during action packed scenes or somewhat more reflective during quieter moments. It is just very much a script of the film, however, so if you’re expecting loads of information/behind the scenes or loads of new things, you might be disappointed.

Overall though, I really loved reading the script book and I feel like I understand the film even better now than I did before!

Absolutely loved it, really enjoyed seeing what got cut from the film and the lines that I may have missed during the film. The photos were a great addition and I have to say this is a must read for anyone who loved the film.
