Preaching the Psalms

Rate this book
This book is designed to help preachers find and use the riches of the Psalms for preaching.

The authors address the perception that the Psalms often go neglected in preparing for one of the central acts of preaching. McCann and Howell demonstrate that the Psalms offer the preacher broad, rich possibilities for the congregation’s engagement with the Scripture. Each chapter concludes with a brief sample.

Usually the Psalms are thought of in a strictly liturgical lense. The authors make the case that the images and metaphors in the Psalms also make wonderful preaching material. It didn't take much to convince me. I preached to my congregation from the Psalms during Lent 2007. I received good feedback, plus it was a spiritual blessing for me.

The introduction has so many helpful quotes from those who have preached the Psalms before us. I would recommend it just for that. It does have helpful tips on studying and preaching as well.
