Οι Χένρι Κάτνερ και Κάθριν Λ. Μουρ έγραψαν με το ψευδώνυμο "Λιούις Πάτζετ" το συγκεκριμένο τρελό μυθιστόρημα επιστημονικής φαντασίας, σχεδόν εβδομήντα χρόνια πριν. Πραγματικά αρκετά μπροστά από την εποχή του, πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο με τρελές ιδέες και ακόμα πιο τρελή ιστορία, που θα ζήλευε ακόμα και ο Φίλιπ Ντικ.

Δύσκολο να γράψω μια περίληψη που να βγάζει νόημα, απλώς θα περιγράψω το γενικό πλαίσιο: Κάπου στο μέλλον, οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες βρίσκονται σε συνεχή πόλεμο με την Ενοποιημένη Ευρώπη. Ο πόλεμος μοιάζει περισσότερο με μια παρτίδα σκάκι, χωρίς μάχες, παρά με κάτι ασήμαντα ρομπότ και τεχνικούς που καθορίζουν τον πόλεμο με βάση τις τεχνολογικές ανακαλύψεις. Κάτι τέτοιο. Κάποια μέρα, μια εξίσωση, μια φόρμουλα, θα περιπλέξει τα πράγματα, με την προσπάθεια επίλυσής της να οδηγεί στην τρέλα τους Αμερικάνους τεχνικούς. Είναι όπλο των Ευρωπαίων; Και τι ρόλο βαράει ένας πολεμιστής που έρχεται από το μέλλον; Οι υπεύθυνοι του τμήματος ψυχομετρίας καλούνται να βρουν μια λύση... εκτός και αν τρελαθούν και αυτοί! Αν και η ιστορία είναι σκάρτα 170 σελίδες, συμβαίνουν ένα κάρο τρελά πράγματα και βλέπουμε ένα κάρο τρελές ιδέες. Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι "έπιασα" τα πάντα, ούτε ότι πείστηκα από την όλη πλοκή, πάντως σίγουρα αυτά που διάβασα μου κίνησαν το ενδιαφέρον και με έκαναν να διαβάσω το βιβλίο σχεδόν μονοκοπανιά. Η γραφή μου φάνηκε αρκετά καλή και ευκολοδιάβαστη, οι χαρακτήρες μάλλον μονοδιάστατοι και χωρίς βάθος, η ατμόσφαιρα σίγουρα παρανοϊκή.

Γενικά, είναι ένα παλπ μυθιστόρημα επιστημονικής φαντασίας, με ενδιαφέρουσες ιδέες και τρελή πλοκή. Ποιοτικά δεν νομίζω ότι φτάνει τα καλά βιβλία του Φίλιπ Ντικ, όμως σίγουρα τα πλησιάζει σε παράνοια και ψυχεδέλεια. Σαν βιβλίο δεν είναι για όλα τα γούστα, άλλωστε ούτε εμένα ενθουσίασε, όμως μια ματιά από τους λάτρεις τους είδους την αξίζει.

Πολύ γρήγορη πλοκή, παρανοϊκή και κλειστοφοβική ατμόσφαιρα. Ο κόσμος που μας δίνεται δεν εξηγείται ποτέ πλήρως ή σε βάθος και παίρνουμε πληροφορίες μόνο αποσπασματικά, γεγονός που προσθέτει στην όλη ομιχλώδη και παράξενη ατμόσφαιρα. Αυτή η ταχύτητα του βιβλίου νομίζω ότι βοηθάει στο να μην κάτσεις πολύ και σκεφτείς για το κατά πόσο είναι πιστευτά ή επαρκώς εμπεριστατωμένα όλα όσα συμβαίνουν και οι φανταστικές ιδέες που παρουσιάζονται και να επικεντρωθείς στην πλοκή. Εκεί που χάνει λίγο είναι πιστεύω στους χαρακτήρες καθώς όλοι παρουσιάζονται κάπως μονόπλευροι, αν και αυτό δεν είναι κάτι που με ενοχλεί γενικότερα σε μια ιστορία με αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα πλοκή. Αν βγάλω από τη μέση το γεγονός πως η συγκεκριμένη έκδοση πάσχει λίγο ως προς την μετάφραση, θεωρώ πως οι συγγραφείς σε αρκετά σημεία αφήνουν τα γεγονότα υπερβολικά μετέωρα με σκοπό να χάνομαι και να μην καταλαβαίνω τι συμβαίνει. Πολλά ανεξήγητα γεγονότα στην σειρά σε ένα βιβλίο μπορούν να προκαλέσουν μια δικαιολογημένη δυσφορία σε κάποιον αναγνώστη. Πρέπει να πω πως δεν με ενθουσίασε ιδιαίτερα αλλά είχε κάποια σημεία που έλαμψαν και με έκαναν να σταθώ σε αυτά. Τα σημεία ας πούμε των παραισθήσεων με κέρδισαν πλήρως απλά και μόνο από άποψη εικόνας και ατμόσφαιρας όπως και η ζοφερή εικόνα των πόλεων. Επίσης μου άρεσε η ανάλυση των φιλοσοφικών προεκτάσεων της πλοκής στο τέλος του βιβλίου. Γενικότερα έχω ανάμεικτα συναισθήματα και θα το πρότεινα, σε κάποιον που έχει ήδη κάποιο πάθος με την επιστημονική φαντασία κι όχι σε κάποιον casual reader. Μου φάνηκαν τέλος ενδιαφέρουσες οι ομοιότητες με μια άλλη ιστορία που είχα διαβάσει, το "οι άνθρωποι επιστρέφουν" του Jack Vance, o οποίος επίσης αγγίζει το ζήτημα της διαστροφής της πραγματικότητας και των λογικών φυσικών κανόνων της και προτείνει, όπως και το βιβλίο αυτό, ως λύση στην διαρκή ανεξήγητη μεταβολή την αναζήτηση καταφυγίου στην τρέλα.

Sci-fi ψυχεδέλεια από τους Χένρι Κάτνερ και Λ. Μουρ, αντρόγυνο που έγραφε με το ψευδώνυμο Lewis Padgett. Μπορεί να μη σας ενθουσιάσει καθώς δείχνει τα χρόνια του, αλλά σκεφτείτε πότε γράφτηκε...

Inventiva sfrenata, assolutamente anticipatrice di certe elaborazioni letterarie in chiave psichedelica successive. Le stelle però rimangono quattro e non cinque perchè a mio parere soffre di una certa discontinuità nel ritmo narrativo. Henry Kuttner e la sua consorte Catherine Lucille Moore erano comunque innovativi e la loro produzione si legge sempre volentieri anche per il soffuso umorismo che salta fuori assai spesso tra le pagine.

Very good Kuttner/Moore story. Feels a lot like PDK but this was written many years before PDK's style of Cold War paranoia. In this case WW2 was just barely over. You have people living underground while a war is being fought and utilizing drugs and a modest form of virtual reality to keep themselves going. The novella moves quickly and really keeps your interest. This is good because it enables you to easily suspend believe in the "equation" stolen from the enemy which allows all sorts of physically impossible things to occur while also driving anybody insane who actually tries to figure out the "equation" itself. Then you throw in a time traveler from the future who seems to be connected somehow and becomes more important as the story progresses. The book is written as SF with many small SF innovations even though the main plot premise, the "equation", is more of a fantasy element.

I didn't know that "fairy chess" was a real thing until I looked it up after reading this story. Interesting idea that it would take a certain kind of mind like a mind capable of playing a very unconventional form of chess to solve the "equation" without going crazy.

"Chessboard Planet" (The Fairy Chessmen) by "Lewis Padgett" (Henry Kuttner and Catherine Moore) takes place far along the kind of protracted atomic war that was imaginable in 1946. Low Chicago and the other cities are safely underground, and society is regimented for total war. Technology sustains an illusion of living in an idyllic surface world, as in Kuttner and Moore's story "Jesting Pilot." Drugs like Kix and Deep Sleep and the 1946 equivalents of computer games and virtual reality help everyone cope.

The stalemate is threatened when the enemy begins to use weapons that appear to violate the laws of physics. A captured equation seems to be the explanation, but anyone who studies it goes insane -- and can also violate the laws of physics, for example by floating in mid-air, most dangerously a physicist who can make anything disappear by thinking it away, including the entire universe. Robert Cameron, Director of Psychometrics, is in charge of the project. Though he hasn't seen the equation -- his aides are concealing it from him -- he is subject to terrifying hallucinations, which he in turn is concealing from his aides and everyone else. Is he insane or under attack by a weaponized reality?

Meanwhile, the spy who originally stole the equation is trying to bypass Cameron's aides and confront him with it. Is he an enemy agent or, since he seems to know everything Cameron will do, is he a time traveler from the future who brought the equation with him? Another enigma is the duds, shells of impregnable force that materialized from nowhere twenty years ago, arriving in gene-altering blasts of radiation, inactive and decaying ever since.

There are plot twists, reveals, and nightmarish surprises, all in a deepening atmosphere of claustrophobia and paranoia. Except for a few expository dumps, the prose is very slick and possesses an inimitable quiet tension, as in the opening lines:

"The doorknob opened a blue eye and looked at him. Cameron stopped moving. He didn't touch the knob. He pulled back his hand and stood motionless, watching.

"Then, when nothing happened, he stepped to one side. The black pupil of the eye swiveled in that direction. It watched him."

The Fairy Chessmen is an obvious model and inspiration for the novels of Philip K Dick two decades later, such as The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Its characters, its ideas, its vision of society, though similar, are much less profound, less evolved from pulp fiction. I loved it and recommend it to fans of the pop culture of the period -- the era of film noir and atomic paranoia -- and those curious about Philip K Dick's roots.
