Wings of Love
Devastated after losing his partner of fifteen years to cancer, Dr. Bradford Mitchell tries to escape the emptiness and loss by leaving his life in Seattle behind. Pretty easy breezy despite the dead spouse trope and the grieving process that comes with it.
This is peppered with a good amount of cheesiness, plenty of fast explicit, a few harrowing situations and overall, much appreciated maturity and talking things out despite the unnecessary melodrama at the end.
Don’t worry. Everyone survives, and these two get their well earned happy ending together!

Oh, I just loved this book! No book has ever made me cry within the first 2 pages before. But not in a horrible way to make me put it down. I knew the MC's life partner was going to die, but the depth of his loss was expressed so emotionally that I just lost it. Kudos to Scotty Cade, he got me hooked right away.
I absolutely feel in love with both MCs, Brad and Mac, from the very beginning. There was no insta-love, which is what shifter "mate" stories are for, but their love progressed slowly and realistically and was just beautiful. The angst/conflict towards the end of the book was heartbreaking and very believable and had me sobbing my eyes out once again, which made the HEA incredibly satisfying and had the waterworks going again. Holy emotional roller coaster ride!
Highly recommended for emotional saps who love M/M romance, angst and exploratory homosexual sex between partners who have a real love connection.

Brad Mitchell is a 38 year old doctor who loses his partner of 15 years due to cancer. Mac Cleary is a 46 year old pilot who uses to fly Brad (and his partner) to Hyline Like, Alaska in the past. The two bond when Brad decides to stay there, especially because Mac also loses his wife due to cancer. The friendship becomes something more, when both finds they are attacted to one another. Except Mac is straight, he never really looks at men before ... can he deals with the fact that this time, after his wife, he might falls in love with a guy?
In a similar way, I feel for the story just like what I feel for Zahra Owen's Clouds and Rain, which I read prior to this. The premise is good, the first few chapters promising, but at the same time I never feel emotionally connected with the two guys, even after I finish it.
The coming of Mac and Brad into a relationship is naturally progressed. I can see how the two guys, who both experience devastating loss in the past of respective spouses, connect in a deeper way. It's easy to feel comfortable in the company of people who know what you are going through. But that is pretty much it ... I feel like there is never a climax, except in the end when Mac is facing a decision whether he should pursue his new found-love with Brad or his family. All the way through the reading, it's a steady pulse, not boring but not too engrossing either.
The lovemaking doesn't come until almost 2/3 of the book -- which is good for me, considering their circumstance, it's exactly what I expect from it. Mac has never been with a guy before, and it's good that he doesn't immediately jump into his feeling for Brad. I enjoy reading their inner thoughts as both Mac and Brad analyze what they feel for one another.
Either way, what I love the most about this story is how the two characters are both adult. Mac is 46 while Brad is 38. It's really good to read story about people in this age. It has maturity sense to it. I also love the setting in Alaskan mountains; that kind of "alone" setting does have its pull towards the guys.
It's a good read, though it doesn't make me deeply attached to them.

More like 1.5 Stars. The concept of this book sounded really interesting but it didn't work for me in a few ways. The first of which is that I don't believe this author has ever been to Alaska in October/November or December because the Alaska that wasn't described very well is not the Alaska I lived in for years. So right away I was picking apart untruths about the way the weather was described. Then there was the dialogue which was cheesy at best and so OTT emotional. Maybe I hang around a whole different group of guys but I have never been around men who are so emotional, open and talkative as these two were so quickly with each other. The whole hugging each other, holding each other and I love you man within a week of spending time together was just crazy to me. The dialogue was also stilted with a lot of internal speeches and the entire romance felt like a "tell not show". We can throw in the cliche homophobic brother in law and the improbable you almost died moment as well. I spent more time rolling my eyes and actually saying "you have got to be kidding me no one talks this way" than I did enjoying the story. But a lot of GR friends rated this much higher than me so maybe they see something I didn't and maybe you will to but I can definitely say this wasn't for me!

July 9, 2011Wings of Love was for sure a good romance, but it had also the feeling of being true, not so pink glasses perspective as many other romances I read. First of all the two main characters, Brad and Mac, are not so young, not so old even, but let say they are not new at the love game: Brad has recently lost to cancer his partner of 15 years and Mac is a recent widower. Mac has already had the time to adapt to the loss of his wife while instead Brad’s wound is still fresh; when Brad goes back to Alaska, in the place he and his partner loved so much, Mac is a familiar face, and a strong shoulder he can rely to when sadness catch him. Brad impulsively decides to buy an isolated cabin and since the cabin is the same Mac and his wife wanted to buy as well, they decide to move in together. From being roommate to being lovers the step is short, maybe too short for Mac that has no time to digest the news he is gay. Mac claims with Brad he has never had any homosexual desire before meeting Brad, and we need to believe him; what I think is that basically Mac is a monogamous lover, and when he fell for his wife, he had no other thought for anyone else, and now that he is falling in love for Brad, he is the same. Mac is bisexual, for him the gender of his lover is not important, what is important is the feeling.
Brad’s issue instead is not really that he is falling for an apparently straight man, but more that he is still mourning his lost partner. Again, to be true with him, I had a similar experience with a dear one lost to cancer, and who lives with a terminal patient has plenty of time to prepare to the final moment, and when it happens, you are already in the process of learning to live without your dear one. So no, I don’t think Brad’s feelings for Mac are too immediate or maybe temporary, what I think is that, once they start the relationship, they will need time to find their balance, as indeed is in the plot of the story.
The romance between the men is good but not too sugary; there is the right dose of sex, and the sex was always direct and basic, not really roses and champagne, but more the good and healthy expression of two adult men. It was also very physical, but not the acrobatic variety, more again, two men who had no issue to admit what felt good and what they could enjoy of their body (see Mac’s discovery of man on man sex).

I have read quite a few romances, ranging from m/f, f/m/m, m/f/m, and m/m (yeah that's a lot of /'s). What I have always found fascinating is when I see that a man has written a romance book. Somehow I thought that they would be all butch and about sex, not in depth with discussion with their feelings.
And on the other hand, when I have read female writers writing m/m, I sometimes thought, "how can she really know how it feels to be gay? That character sounds like a chick in a suit."
So enter Scotty Cade. I found this book charming, emotional, and something that I could relate.
My husband and I hardly ever fight, and when we have discussions, I sometimes feel like folks would not believe me. We end up saying things like, "I hear what you are saying, but this is what I am hearing...." typical psychologist talk, but it works!
And yet here we have Brad and Mac, who are open and honest with their feelings and have truthful discussions. It is great not to have an author just use some typical misunderstanding or personality trope to cause friction. Yes, we do have some angst, but I felt that it was realistic and it not too much.
I am looking to see what the next book in this series and give it a shot. I guess what this author has taught me is that cheesy saying is really true, "you can't judge a book by the cover" or in this case, by the sex of the author.

Loved this story, it is beautifully written and I read the whole thing in one day I couldn't put it down and I can't wait to start the next in the series.
I love to read M/M romance, some how they seem more romantic than most M/F romances out there today or maybe there just different.
Brad and Mac were great together, the beginning was hard to read without crying and I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue I'm glad I did. The story just got better and better as I got further into it. I found it a teeny bit hard to swallow how fast these two fell for each other, especially after what Brad just went through with his long time partner and Mac never being in any kind of relationship like this one before. I know this stuff can and does happen but it felt like there were missing pages to this story, it went from them being friends to BAM they were together, would have been better if the story was longer so that more time could be spent with them trying to come to terms with there feelings for each other, especially Mac.
I got over that fast though and loved everything else about this story. Got to go now so I can start the next one, can't wait!!!!!

Bradford Mitchell’s lover, Jeff succumbs to his long battle with cancer and the devastation sets the tone for Wings of Love. Brad goes to Alaska, a place he and Jeff enjoyed together both loved. It's the one place he feels closer to his lover and can also hide away from concerned freiends and family and try and deal with his grief. Mac Cleary, a pilot and widower, who knows first hand what loss of a loved one is like, becomes fast friends with Brad. Not only do they share the loss of their lovers there is a growing attraction between them that can't be denied.
Wings of Love is a beautifully written romance about two men dealing with pain, loss and heartbreak, who in the end find that even devastation can't stop the heart from loving again.
Highly recommended for all the true Romantics at heart.

This was a great story about some very real men coming to terms with emotionally difficult situations. Brad has lost his partner to cancer, and has a hard time dealing with that. Mac is beginning to realize he's very attracted to Brad, which confuses him since he thought he was straight.
I liked the thoughtful pace of the book, the slow development of friendship, deepening attraction and finally love. The setting and descriptions of the Alaskan mountains were beautiful.

This book is bad and stupid and stupid. The dialogue is bad. The characters are two-dimensional. The writing is cliche and cheesy. Oh, and it is a bi-phobic gay-for-you story...which is always such a pleasure to read. At one point I had to put my kindle down so I could literally bang my head against the couch because the story was so over-the-top cringe-worthy cliche.

Wow. So this book had me tearing up 2 pages in. We know from the blurb that Brad is mourning the loss of his long term partner, but the emotion and pain for Jeff dying is written so beautifully that I couldn't help but cry. Brad decides he needs to get away from everything so he takes off to Alaska (where he and Jeff used to go often). He finds the pilot that always flew them (and who had become a friend and who had lost his wife a few years earlier) and their friendship grows through their grief. Eventually their friendship turns to much more and we get our HEA.
What did bother me a bit was how off the conversations seemed at times. In one breath, they are both saying they aren't ready for anything...then 2 minutes later they are kissing or doing any number of other things...then saying "but I don't know what I want". I felt like a ping pong ball at times. I also felt like a bit of the dialogue was repetitive, so it threw me off for a little bit. Overall, though, the story was a nice one and I enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading more.

I loved this book!
This is a story about loss of loved ones and the journey to a happy and fulfilling life.
Grab your tissues readers......
Brad and Mac started their relationship as friends, this friendship developed into something more even though they would not acknowledge this. Mac struggled with his decisions and feelings, as he was traveling into unchartered territory and Brad was more than willing to teach him the ropes. And I must add, Brad is an absolute sweetheart!
I loved traveling this journey with Brad and Mac and would love to read more of them. Hated to see it "end".

The dialogue was stilted and unnatural to the ear, and the writing even more so. A lot of run-on sentences along the lines of "this happened and this, but unrelated thing no one thought of, he thought that because of this which lead to that, but then the sentence ended abruptly."
Sometimes one has a problem differentiating between characters in a m/m romance due to the ambiguity of pronouns in the English language - not so in this book. Each character's name is mentioned every other sentence, particularly in dialogue, even if they have just said it to each other a moment before. I have had friends whom I have known my entire life who haven't said my name as often as these characters do in 5 minutes. It felt almost pantomime.
Loved the concept, but unfortunately not to invest in a continued read.

Ok, so I was crying before I even finished the prologue and I knew I was going to be on an emotional roller coaster ride with this story and I was right.
Mac the straight pilot who lost his wife about 6 years ago and Brad the openly gay man that just lost his partner of 15 years to cancer do not seem like they would be the couple in this story but they so are! After Brad lays his partner to rest he decides to go to Alaska where they vacationed to feel closer to him, upon his first day there he stumbles upon a cabin and decides to purchase it, this cabin is something that Bob Vila would have loved...it needed TONS of work done on it, he spoke with Mac about it and he decided to go in on the cabin with Brad. I absolutely loved the way their relationship grew while they worked on the cabin together, time passed and their feeling grew for one another, now remember Mac is straight, at least he was until he started developing feelings for Brad...ok so maybe he's bi, or maybe it like Brad had said ~ people are born sexual and it's only when they are old enough to understand that society believes that same sex relationships are wrong that it makes people attracted to the opposite sex, if people were free to love who they wanted to, there wouldn't be any hangups and most likely there would be more same sex couples. Now that isn't a quote but it is pretty darn close to what he said and what he said was so spot on that Mac agreed with him.
IF ONLY EVERYONE HAD AN OPEN MIND, THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE!!! This was the first book I have read by Scotty Cade and I look forward to reading more of his books.

My Review:
I bought this book on a high recommendation from a friend. While I enjoyed it, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as she did. The premise is interesting: one guy, Brad, who's gay and his partner of fifteen years just died of cancer; the other guy, Mac, who's in his 40's, been straight his entire life, but can commiserate with Brad because his wife died. They've both suffered catastrophic loss and bond and become friends over that commonality. To the point, where they decide to buy a very remote cabin together...as friends, nothing more.
But you know this is a gay romance novel, things are going to develop. Where Scotty Cade wrote this really well is how slowly he built up this relationship. That part of the story was perfection. I could believe the way this relationship developed. These guys truly fell in love with the other based on the person, not the sex. I liked that connection they have....a great friends to lovers story.
The Alaskan/cabin side of the story was awesome. I love the outdoors, the idea of a secluded cabin, and the idea of getting trapped in a snowstorm....all things that Scotty Cade used to its full potential in this book. He also managed to build some great suspense at the end of the story when the status of these guys' relationship was in doubt.
My only complaint with this book was that sometimes the dialogue just became too sickly sweet for me. There were a few times where I even rolled my eyes. But overall, I really, really enjoyed the story, the setting, the characters...and all of it. Now I need to decide if I'm going to read the next three in the series...I'm thinking I probably will.

I tried. I really did. I wanted to like this story, but it tore me to pieces. Not only did the MC's narrate the book and TELL me what was happening, but I also just didn't really like the story. Allow me to explain. This story takes place in Alaska at what is apparently a remote lodge. I may be wrong, but it appears to me (based on this story) that Scotty Cade has never been to Alaska. I live in Alaska. See the problem?
I think when people are intimately familiar with elements that an author is writing about, it makes the story ten times harder to sell, and this one just didn't do it for me. The Alaska that Cade wrote about in this book is not the Alaska I know and it just fell short for me. However, for anyone who hasn't been to Alaska or who doesn't know much about Alaska, it's probably not going to bother you and you might not even notice. So, personal opinions.
For the positives, I really liked Bradford's backstory. He experienced tremendous loss and Cade writes about that very well. Even though Bradford was moving forward and trying to get past that point in his life, it was still very much a part of him and he was still learning to deal with the loss and give himself permission to move on and be happy again. Even though I think Mac and Bradford could've been a good match, I think their romance was rushed and I just couldn't connect with them.
The whole story was kinda like playing a high stakes game of strip poker when all you have on is a single sock. Kinda pointless.

Scotty Cade’s Wings of Love story starts off with the death of Bradford Mitchell’s long-time partner, Jeff. Devastated by grief, Brad goes to the place Jeff and he loved – Alaska. Once there he finds friendship with bush pilot Mac Cleary, a widower, whose never really gotten over the loss of his wife 14 years earlier. As the two men grow closer, Mac realizes the feelings he has for Brad aren’t just platonic and they decide to explore their attraction to one another.

Wings of Love has a lot going for it. I loved that the two MC are "older," Mac is 46 and Brad is 38. It's refreshing to read about gay men with a few miles on them. The pace of the story is on the slower end of the spectrum, but it works well and adds to the story. The story takes place in one of my favorite places, Alaska, and living as Brad and Mac did in a small off-the-grid cabin high in the mountains has always been a fantasy of mine. I'm ready to go, but I have to find the guy who's got the same fantasy to go with me.
I found Wings of Love to be a very good read. The book is written and edited well and I look forward to reading more of Mr. Cade's work. I give it 3.5 stars.

This was more like 2.5 for me. The premise for the story was a good one but the MCs felt flat and the chemistry was not really there...I didn't really feel the heat they were supposed to have. I am all for slow building romances but there was a lot of "telling" rather than developing and that always gets old after a while.
I don't care for it when MCs "weep"(that is the word the author uses), a little weeping goes along way - seems to be a lot of weeping and tears trickling and eyes welling in the 2nd half as the MCs faced some self truths, etc. For me, it became like whatever...man up...and I really got pissed off at how one of the MCs allowed his brother-in-law to treat his supposed love interest…total wuss…

Love happens, and sometimes in very unexpected quarters as Brad and Mac find out. Brad has just lost the man in his life and in an attempt at recovery flies to his favorite spot in Alaska. Mac lost his wife several years ago but is really still going through the motions of his life when Brad shows up needing a flight into the interior. An unlikely pair in an unlikely situation who find that just maybe they need each other to heal. A very compelling read that keeps you turning the pages from beginning to end.

Another great book from Scotty.. This book may come with a warning that you just may need tissues with this. Brad and Mac's story is a beautiful one. Bradford after the death of his husband from cancer, leaves and goes to where he was happiest to Hiline Lake. Mac charters a plane for quests for the lodge and has been alone since his wife death 2 years past. Can they rebuild their lives..

I really enjoyed this first story in the "Love" series. It's about loss but also about finding love again. I loved Brad and Mac together. I lived in Alaska for three years and it's a beautiful place if you can ever get there. It gets really cold but still beautiful:-)

3.5-4 Stars. I thought the idea behind this book was a good one - as was the story. I think for me the dialogue was just too basic. I like deeper I guess.

3.5 ⭐️ This book starts out and ends very strong. I got choked up when Brad loses his partner. I was intrigued by the premise of an acquaintance to friend to lovers. Mac was such an amazing guy. And he and Brad seem to click, BUT most of the romance has too many details...lots of coffee drinking and making, rubbing feet, lots of wine and bourbon drinking, lots of sunsets and rocking on the porch and talking in detail about repairs to a cabin. This may be sweet and romantic in real life...it’s just not fascinating to read. Not sure I agree with the long passage that we are socialized to only like the opposite sex and people would suddenly be attracted to the same sex if it weren’t taboo. Certainly Brad is gay and doesn’t seem attracted to women. Mac was bisexual and it hints he always was from his high school encounters. I can’t imagine a hetero man being ok with another man rubbing his feet or jumping into bed with a man feet first. I thought it odd that Mac admits to some type of sexual encounter in high school and then turns around and has never kissed or touched a man. That made no sense. This is one in a series so I have book 2 on hold so an ok read.

This was okay.
The emotional punch in the beginning was the most powerful.
I know it had been 6 months, before they started to explore a relationship, but it didn't feel like it. It felt like it had only been a couple week after the death of his partner. So that was a little weird for me.
Still, I liked their relationship progress.
I did think that the OMG you almost died, resolution was a bit of a cop out...it worked, it just felt to easy and convenient.
This is not a negative review. It's not glowing, but I did find the book entertaining.
