Vanished Waters is 136 page historical and ecological description of the area from the earliest European explorers to visit the area in 1775 up to 1986.

Nancy Olmsted wrote Vanished Waters in 1986 under contract to the Mission Creek Conservancy in order to publicize the beauty and historical importance of the Mission Bay District of San Francisco.

The author's research papers from the project are archived at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park as part of the Online Archive of California, although they have not yet been digitized.

This is a brilliant, brief book that anyone who lives in SoMa/Mission Bay (i.e., many tech newcomers at some point) will benefit from reading. It will help you understand the geography and history of your own neighborhood in the micro-sense.
