The Treasury of Religious Verse

Rate this book
A glorious heritage of singular beauty and inspiration is man's poetic expression throughout the ages in praise of God and in reverent response to the wonders of His creation.

In this attractive anthology of more than 600 selections, the entire spectrum of religious verse acquires radiant new reflection for today's more meaningful assimilation and practical employment.

Arranged under 33 topics of universal Christian interest and concern, here are enduring poetic works conveying the deepest emotion of the soul... the essentials of Christian faith... the outreach of that faith in the home, the nation, the Church... the dream world of peace.

The widely honored writings of bygone eras merge impressively with compositions of current popularity and acclaim in The Treasury of Religious Verse. Represented in these pages are such contemporary lyricists as Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, and T.S. Eliot, and such poetic masters as Browning, Tennyson, Bunyan, and Cowper.

Comprehensive indexing enhances the value of this anthology as an outstanding resource volume for minister, speaker, teacher, and writer as well as for schools and libraries. All selections are catalogued according to Titles and First Lines, Subjects, Authors, and Special Days and Occasions.

Here is inspirational reading to which one will return often and which will be joyfully shared - an eminent treasury indeed of man's most immortal song.

I have had this book for many, many years, and have referred to it from time to time. But only recently did I pick it up and read it cover to cover. I have used some of these in writing and speaking, but just sitting and reading them for myself--sometimes aloud--has been a great blessing to me. There are "600 selections of great poetry from the works of more than 300 poets, classic and contemporary"--a description from the very cover of the paperback edition I have, published in September 1973. You will find selection from James Russell Lowell, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Francis Ridley Havergal, Annie Johnson Flint, John Oxenham, Fanny Crosby, William Cowper, and many more.
