The story was not bad. I would have given it 3 or 4 stars. But, the grammatical errors were driving me insane. Not just typos. The misuse of lie versus lay, sentence construction and wording that made no sense were all common. For instance "...Frank closed all the doors, tossed in his knapsack and weapon" Really? He threw his knapsack through the closed door? Then crawled in through a window?
Many of the characters were hard to like or even care about. Specifically, Ellen, a ditzy, immoral, self-centered bimbo who very selfishly insists on getting pregnant before all of the dead bodies have been burned. I also did not care for Dean, an arrogant little twit. Which brings me to the reason I would give this book negative stars if I could. Dean is supposedly a lieutenant in the army and a very specialized doctor. Doctors enter the army as captains. Ones that are already specialized go in as a major. Then we find out that he has been in the army for 10 years! What? After ten years in the army no promotions? Has he been demoted? A little research would have been all that was needed to avoid that mistake. Or just watching a few reruns of M*A*S*H*.
I can't believe there are 26 books in this series. I won't waste my time on them.

Ellen was a 2.5 star Ho!!!

Once again I find myself in the minority with my partial dislike of a story.

I absolutely loved the first book I read by this author. This book started off great and slowly turned into a circus.

Three of the main characters ended up being nuts. Ellen was a Ho! Frank was a complete moron, and Dean was basically a punk, like 90% spineless. I did like Dean for the most part.

Nobody seemed to mourn losing loved ones. They just moved on after the first day as if everything was dandy.

The apacolyspe part of the story was great. What I couldn't understand is how the focus was all on finding a cure for what was killing everyone and surviving whole helping each other. There was a little glimps into the life of two married couples who seemed to all be unbalanced, but then it turned into this crazy ridiculous circus romance that just dragged on and on. The story attempted to get back on track but by that time the damage was already done.

I'm in the middle on this book. Maybe if Ellen hadn't been the Ho that she was, I would have liked it more. I really want to say so much more.

This book is one of my all time favorite EOTW books. It is the first in a Series of 30!!!! If you love post-apocalyptic fiction, once you start these you won't want to put them down. I'm finished with the series and reading them all over again I loved them so much.

I'll go with the GoodReads star definitions. It was ok. It started off really interesting. I liked the format of different places and times for the virus to start. Then it kind of went bleh. The Silent Victor read like a movie directed by Michael Bay.

There's a lot of extra drama, that at the beginning is ok because everyone's living their normal lives and normal lives ARE drama, but when it increases at the end it just seems pointless. Like, you have other things to deal with people! Smarten up! I kind of just wanted to slap the lot of them.

The only strong female lead (only female lead at all really) is portrayed as

Aside from that there are some places where it looks like the author just ran out of words and started using a thesaurus without knowing exactly what all the words meant. Easy enough to read through but definitely bumps you out of book land.

There were some other formatting and grammar errors that I'll contact the author about, so hopefully she feels they deserve fixing up. For grammar alone there's about 1 every 14 pages that I remembered to write down.

UNREADABLE

I had to abandon this book because it's so badly written.
I almost reached 10% of the book, which is about 100 pages in my e-reader. Until that point nothing actually happened. It was plain boring. Nothing happened aside from rapidly changing the scenes after each couple of pages and introducing more and more and more characters that were all plain boring. And there were so many of them that I couldn't keep most of them in mind.

1 - So the biggest mistake for me was: there are too many characters, I found it impossible to remember who is who. Sometimes when I thought I finally got to know a character in the book, the writer immediately starts to introduce his secretary, and the secretary's father, and her father's best friend, and the best friends favorite 20 dogs out of his 100 dogs (each mentioned one by one). I swear to God that the Dallas TV Show didn't have as many characters as this book has!

2 - The second biggest mistake was for me that it's really badly written. There are many weirdly written sentences with changed up sentence-parts. Sometimes it's written as if Yoda would have written it from Star Wars. I found it extremely hard to follow the story when I found myself trying to figure out the meaning of a sentence by reading it the third time. Sorry Ms. Yoda, but you kneed at least a good editor or some years of more practicing before publishing a real professional book.

In my opinion this is a highly overrated amateur writing. It's unreadable.

I really thought I would love this book. I did for probably the first half, but then the characters changed. I suppose that was the point...how people would change after an apocalypse, but I ended up not liking most of them.

Ellen was just a whore. Frank was an asshole. Dean was suppose to be brilliant but seemed simple. Andrea made sure all the dead bodies were all packed up nice and neat in the empty hospital before she decided to go see if her husband was still alive. The only one I liked at all was Joe. Kelly was the smart one - faced with having to live the rest of her life with these people, she killed herself. That wasn't really why she did it, but it would be why I'd do it. The other thing that struck me as odd was that Dean was supposed to be this great Gov't virologist but even knowing that they all had an immunity, he didn't focus on their blood and the factors that kept the virus out. And he fainted when Ellen gave birth. Worse Doctor Ever !!!!

I know I've been focusing on the bad but there really was a lot of the story I liked. The struggle during the initial outbreak and the weeks after were good. It was once everyone came together that it all went bad for me. It read more like a soap opera at that point. I'm sure this will make a decent movie though.

I did not enjoy this book at all.
Loose editing and numerous typos aside, this is an example of what bothered me the most:
"The music blared so loudly through John's headphones that George found it distastefully loud."
The way that sentence is written completely distracts me from and deflates the idea.
That is the author's style.
Druga uses that flat, redundant structure of expression throughout the book.
After struggling through the writing to get to the concepts, I couldn't laugh in favor of the author or be interested in the actions or fates of the characters, who were completely unbelievable by the way.
Miguel, with his purportedly limited English, says, "None of us, in any of the conversations that we've had, has mentioned that we know the first thing about farming. In order for us to determine what we need, we'll have to bring our trio out here first."
And, how could any man in this story care about Ellen?
They're supposed to be badasses, of course, in each of their fields (I'm including Joe) but are for some reason emotionally incompetent when it comes to some useless scumbag.
I assume it's because Ellen is pretty, of course.
I'm angry that our group read this book.
I want to give my honest opinions and participate, but I don't want to write reviews like this.

This is the second book by this author I have read and like the first I was not disappointed. Jacqueline Druga is a master when it comes to nasty viruses bringing humanity to the edge of extinction. Silent Victor sees a killer virus released that nearly wipes out mankind in a matter of a week. The plot is well thought out and executed and I for one enjoyed the journey it took me on. The virus component of this book is well thought out and it is evident the author has done her homework. The characters and their relationships with each other were engaging and believable. I love books like this as they scare the crap out of me more than any horror book. The chilling fact is that at any time a mutated virus could wreak havoc upon the human population, it has happened before and it is bound to happen again. I for one will be back for the next instalment of this series. This author is certainly becoming one of my favourites.

I spent the entire day reading this book, since I couldn't put it down until I was done. The relationships are extremely hard to understand at the beginning, but before the book is over, everyone has their correct place and correct understanding.
I read this book on my Kindle unlimited, and I'm sad to say that the second book isn't part of the unlimited plan, but the third one is, and I'm going straight to the third one called Beyond The Wall. Hopefully, I will not feel too left out.
Druga is one of my new favorite authors.

good story, poor characters & unrealistic

Spoilers!

I liked the story, but I was very disappointed in the characters: Frank was just your average day bully, Ellen was smart but a ditz, and Dean was a wimpy soldier it felt like.

Here’s the spoilers:
As a parent I found Ellen’s want to have a baby a week after losing her 2nd child to be wholly unrealistic. She barely seemed to mourn, and in a game of survival I doubt that’d be the most important thing on her mind. It seemed like it was thrown in because of the Garfield Project premise, and it felt extremely forced.

Many things felt forced-the love triangle just did not feel genuine.

Adding on to my issues with the characters & plot is the fact that it needed to be edited better. Spaces were missing all over the book, which I’d normally overlook or dock a star for. Since the editing caused me to have to reread things multiple times for clarification, it needed to be brought up.

Other than these things, I enjoyed the rest of the book. I have read other Druga books, and this one just was not as great as her other pieces.

If you are a fan of Jacqueline Druga’s, I recommend this book. If you have not read any of her books, start somewhere else.

3.5 rounding down to 3. An easy read, but such a missed opportunity. It was all just a bit too easy; they were all just acting as if they were on an extended camp-out, rather than surviving the end of the world. Also jumping forward 4 years over what could have been the most interesting and challenging part, setting up Beginnings, was rather infuriating.
Also did everyone just forget about Carl?
I will give a few more books a go, seeing as this is the first of 31 books. I'm interested in seeing where she takes the series. Hopefully makes it more about surviving and less a post apocalypse soap-opera.

I gave this book a very generous two stars - for the first part of the story. The plot then moved on to the equivalent of several episodes of Eastenders. Would people really bother with all that exhausting relationship 'stuff' when reeling from the shock of the end of the known world? Completely unrealistic in my opinion. Surely, initially, they'd just be intent on saving themselves from danger. Relationships could develop later on in the series. Seemed as if the author had run out of ideas so used this as a filler. Not to mention the terrible grammer and spelling mistakes.

Poorly written, unlikable characters, and a very worrying neo-nazi leaning towards the end. Helping only the weak, young and female, housing them in ‘containment’ and ‘training’ them to work the fields or clothing section. Drugging and exiling anyone [male] that questions the system of leaving ‘bad apples’ out in the wilderness.

There are, at this time, 30 sequels to this book, I’ll only consider reading them, if and when I’ve read everything else that exists, including cereal boxes….

By the way, I gave it 1 star because you can’t give it less….

Boring book

Started out great but became very unrealistic. With all the grief they should have been feeling, there was way too much laughter. No depression noted more than few seconds. Main female character too silly too be likeable. Very disappointed.

Great book

Very good sequel to the first book..I just love the cast of characters. This is a realistic view of what it might be like after an apocalypse of some type. I can't hardly put the book down. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction and apocalypses.

Wow! This was such a good book! And there are 23 total books in the series as well as 5 sidebar books. Yay! I hope they are all as good as this one.

The Silent Victor is an independently published novel about a flu pandemic that wipes out most of the population and follows a growing group of survivors.

That's it. Yes, I know it sounds like dozens of other books and movies that have already been written and it seems to be getting old. The flu really does get a bad rap, doesn't it? And there are 23 books in the main series. Notice I said books and not short stories. I randomly selected a few books and opened them; one was over 400 pages long. Seriously, how long do you think Druga can drag this out? Well if you make the beginnings of the flu drag out for two or three books... But she doesn't do that! The flu wipes everyone out really fast, definitely well before the end of the book.

This book progresses quickly. Even in the midst of the horror of the pandemic, you still get humor, drama and a love story. There is one character in the book who had me on her side and by the end of the book I disliked her so much I was hoping she would get the flu! That's good writing.

And there is a plug for the Marine Corps. As a Marine Corps brat and now a Marine Corps spouse, I have to say that the Marine Corps plug really deserves a whole star unto itself! Ooh rah!

Now remember, this is an independently published novel and you are not going to get a perfectly edited novel. On Amazon's 'From the Author' section, Druga writes, "While I have gone through it, I am sure it is not editorially perfect, for that I apologize and will keep trying to find the errors." So please keep that in mind. However, I honestly think most people will hardly notice any errors; the story is that good.

Anyway, in my humble opinion, the book is well written, the characters well developed and the story is engrossing. I look forward to reading the entire series, especially if Druga can keep this up. If she can, I will be so incredibly happy! I definitely recommend The Silent Victor.

A good, but hard read for me. It is a great story. It skips around a lot- bouncing from one city and time to another every few pages (sometimes within 2 pages). With many characters, sometimes it was hard for me to really keep up with many things occurring in so many different states with all the people. On the back cover it states. " ...witnessed through the eyes of a small group of people as they battle an unseen and invincible foe". That led me to think there was a handful of people trying to understand and survive a virus. Misleading for me, as there were many people -almost too many. I wonder how many books will be in this series. I love a good trilogy. With 4+ books I tend to get bored after the 3rd book. For me to continue getting 4-12 books, it would have to be really a five star series to keep my attention. I will try to find out how many books are in this series before continuing.

Yikes. Ok, the first half of this book was great...classic Druga. Virus...symptoms...death...destruction...it's great.

Until it isn't.

Basically, here's the quick run-down of the latter half of this book...

1. Ellen is a stupid slut. Seriously. She's also a complete moron. This would be ok, but once she started screwing with Dean and his feelings, I lost all respect for her.

2. Frank is a first class ASSHOLE. The man does not have One. Single. Redeeming. Quality. I was fine with him up until he made his way home. Once he got around Ellen, he became a total douche-bag. Not quite sure who the hell he THINKS he is, but he's an ass.

Overall, I just wasn't impressed with this book. I was hoping I would love this series, but I will not be continuing on with it. I couldn't stand the majority of the characters, so I have no desire to see where they all go. Still lobe Druga, but this was a miss for me.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and I have to say that of the hundreds of audiobooks I have read, this narrator was the worst. From adding commas and periods lala Jim Kirk, to mispronouncing easy words, to the utterly bland characters, this narrator should never be paid to read again.

Now the book: I really liked the first half of the book. I love authors that can kill off characters, and she does that alot in the first half. The book could have used a good couple revisions, but it was an engaging story... Then you get to the second half and it becomes all the things I hated about the twilight series. Idiot romance, inadequate research, scenes without purpose, and an unfulfilling ending.

The second book i choose to read during our senior project was The Silent Victor by Jacqueline Druga. The Silent Victor is an extremely amazing book that tells a interesting story about a terrorist attack on a substation and the effects that take place from the event. It takes place in modern day New York City following a character brain who looks to survive during the terrorist attack. Brains efforts to survive brings you into the book and just fascinates the reader to want to read more. This book may be devastating, but the bravery and all the action makes this book amazing. I would recommend this book to everyone, although not everyone may enjoy the plot as much as i i did.

The first book in the Beginnings series the “Silent Victor” takes us through the start of the plague and fall of civilization. After the initial die off and gruesome ends to many people it slows down and focuses a lot of attention on character development (the series is like 26 books so there is time) but give you a good feel for what is going on and makes you really connect with the main characters. I enjoyed this enough to plan on moving onto the second book in the near future!

I thought the concept and initial chapters were pretty solid. I am not a big fan of rapid jumping between perspectives and it was difficult to focus and bond to the characters. I was troubled by the length of the focus on ellen wanting children. (after burying two? one?) Her motivation wasn't clear to me and the group had no clear goals to help me figure it out. Now, if this were a DA romance, I would give it another star. :)

The author needs to buy - and use - a dictionary. The text is packed with malapropisms. My favourite were:

- bobbed (i.e. barbed) wire
- double ant tundra (double entendre)
... and an old lady insidiously sweeping her porch (not sure what word she might have been looking for with that one).

This being book 1 of "The Beginnings" series certainly leaves the desire to proceed to the next one "Cain". In " The silent victor" the author has prepared the way for a series that I have a feeling I will be with all the way to the END.
