An extraordinary collection of tall tales details the hilarious and incredible exploits of such legends as Paul Bunyan, Sal Fink, Bess Call, John Henry, Annie Oakley, and Johnny Appleseed. Original.
Jane B. Mason grew up in a large family in northern Minnesota. She has written books for kids of all ages under many names and on many subjects, among them ghosts, Jedi, detective duos, princesses, twins, mean girls, and slam books.
Jane has lived in the midwest and on both coasts, but appears to have settled in Oakland, California, and writes almost every day at either a friend's dining room table or a little studio in her back yard, where she has a purple loveseat, a whole lotta books, and an odd selection of trinkets she has unwittingly been collecting since she was a child.
I read this book with a group of fourth graders at the school in which I work. They loved these Tall Tales and so did I. It was fun to rediscover stories I had not heard in awhile and new ones I’d never heard. This collection is notable for including Bess Call, an African American folk hero who hasn’t been written about much in the past to my knowledge. (We are working on presentations now and it has been most difficult to find other source information on her.) The girls in the group fell in love with Bess Call and Annie Oakley.
Interesting book of tall tales of John Henry, Sal Mink, Annie Oakley, Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe. Of the six stories I was familiar with four. Cute stories.
Pretty entertaining tall tales in short chapters. Includes some of the usual suspects like Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill, but also a few less familiars like Sal Fink and Annie Oakley.
You'll find amazing and funny tall stories about the greatest American legends--think of it as your primer to Americana. Read about the adventures of logging legend Paul Bunyan or ride down a raging river with Sal Fink. Sail the high seas with Stormalong or discover how Bess Call could wrestle the strongest, toughest men alive. Meet railroad hero John Henry, sharpshooter Annie Oakley, and fun-loving Johny Appleseed.
