A skunk?! Bella Baxter can't believe what she's hearing or smelling, that is. The old inn her parents moved her into is a disaster. Not only are the walls crumbling and the roof leaking, but also a skunk has taken up residence in the basement! Ages 6-9.
Jane B. Mason grew up in a large family in northern Minnesota. She has written books for kids of all ages under many names and on many subjects, among them ghosts, Jedi, detective duos, princesses, twins, mean girls, and slam books.
Jane has lived in the midwest and on both coasts, but appears to have settled in Oakland, California, and writes almost every day at either a friend's dining room table or a little studio in her back yard, where she has a purple loveseat, a whole lotta books, and an odd selection of trinkets she has unwittingly been collecting since she was a child.
"I got this book when we went to a bookstore in the town where we camped. Bella and her family live in a house hotel with lots of rooms. They had to fix it up. A new friend, Joe, helped with getting a skunk out of their basement with an old pancake found under a bush and then the skunk got in the cage. Bella became friends with Trudy. She worked in the library and was a big helper fixing the hotel with books. Bella overflowed the bathroom with hot water trying to help. Bella's mom wasn't a good cook all the time. Sometimes the food has pieces of roof in it or other parts of the house. But in the end the food for the guests was good. Mom, can we get a butler?" -Cadee, age 7
2nd grade reader, series book. Funny in many places.
7-year old Bella Baxter and her parents have just moved into a down at the heels bed and breakfast and they're trying to get it renovated before the first guests arrive. Bella wants to help. She finds library books about home repair and she enlists the construction know-how of the local librarian. She finds someone to remove the skunk which has taken up residence in the basement. Some of her other tries at helping, however, don't work out so well.
All in all Bella keeps trying. She's smart and she learns fast. A good book for this age group.
