Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley was an American author of fantasy novels such as The Mists of Avalon and the Darkover series, often with a feminist outlook.

Bradley's first published novel-length work was Falcons of Narabedla, first published in the May 1957 issue of Other Worlds. When she was a child, Bradley stated that she enjoyed reading adventure fantasy authors such as Henry Kuttner, Edmond Hamilton, and Leigh Brackett, especially when they wrote about "the glint of strange suns on worlds that never were and never would be." Her first novel and much of her subsequent work show their influence strongly.

Early in her career, writing as Morgan Ives, Miriam Gardner, John Dexter, and Lee Chapman, Marion Zimmer Bradley produced several works outside the speculative fiction genre, including some gay and lesbian pulp fiction novels. For example, I Am a Lesbian was published in 1962. Though relatively tame by today's standards, they were considered pornographic when published, and for a long time she refused to disclose the titles she wrote under these pseudonyms.

Her 1958 story The Planet Savers introduced the planet of Darkover, which became the setting of a popular series by Bradley and other authors. The Darkover milieu may be considered as either fantasy with science fiction overtones or as science fiction with fantasy overtones, as Darkover is a lost earth colony where psi powers developed to an unusual degree. Bradley wrote many Darkover novels by herself, but in her later years collaborated with other authors for publication; her literary collaborators have continued the series since her death.

Bradley took an active role in science-fiction and fantasy fandom, promoting interaction with professional authors and publishers and making several important contributions to the subculture.

For many years, Bradley actively encouraged Darkover fan fiction and reprinted some of it in commercial Darkover anthologies, continuing to encourage submissions from unpublished authors, but this ended after a dispute with a fan over an unpublished Darkover novel of Bradley's that had similarities to some of the fan's stories. As a result, the novel remained unpublished, and Bradley demanded the cessation of all Darkover fan fiction.

Bradley was also the editor of the long-running Sword and Sorceress anthology series, which encouraged submissions of fantasy stories featuring original and non-traditional heroines from young and upcoming authors. Although she particularly encouraged young female authors, she was not averse to including male authors in her anthologies. Mercedes Lackey was just one of many authors who first appeared in the anthologies. She also maintained a large family of writers at her home in Berkeley. Ms Bradley was editing the final Sword and Sorceress manuscript up until the week of her death in September of 1999.

Probably her most famous single novel is The Mists of Avalon. A retelling of the Camelot legend from the point of view of Morgaine and Gwenhwyfar, it grew into a series of books; like the Darkover series, the later novels are written with or by other authors and have continued to appear after Bradley's death.

Her reputation has been posthumously marred by multiple accusations of child sexual abuse by her daughter Moira Greyland, and for allegedly assisting her second husband, convicted child abuser Walter Breen, in sexually abusing multiple unrelated children.

Mon avis en français

My English review

Night's Daughter a retailing of the Magic Flute.

Marion Zimmer Bradley had the ability make the reader see scenery with her words but this book would benefit from editing. There were obvious grammatical errors that were bothersome. I believe this was first released in 1983. In was slow in parts even in the battle scenes. Despite vivid description it seemed vague. I found the ending odd. MZB has become a conundrum for me. I loved Mists of Avalon and the Forest House series. I expect this will be the last of her novels I read.

This retelling of The Magic Flute doesn't share the power of its original opera (perhaps that is simply a product of the change in medium), but it still provides a well-done, classic fantasy love story. While I never felt particularly drawn to or in awe of the plot, I was entertained and occasionally surprised by it's choices. Its discussion of race and identity through the use of animal-human hybrid "Halflings", though, was uncomfortable at best, and this undercurrent kept me from wanting to really engage with the novel.

A quest of self-discovery in a land where animals and humans interbreed, dragons fly and warriors, wizards and sorcerers walk. Interesting themes, spun with Bradley's usual flair, compassion and style.

I had no idea Marion Zimmer Bradley was such a prolific fantasy author. I had only read Mists of Avalon in high school but was unaware that there is a whole series that continues! Back to Night's Daughter. It was interesting being the theme was basically between light and dark that encompasses ones nature and which one you choose to feed.

I'm a huge fan of Mozart and a fan of Marion Zimmer Bradley, so one would think her novelization of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute would truly be a favorite of mine. I did find the novel entertaining and with interesting takes on Mozart's characters, enough to mark this three stars, but I didn't find it completely satisfying. Among MZB's novels, I don't see this as a standout. Note, I'm not a fan of Mists of Avalon, I thought MZB was at her best not in reinterpreting classic tales such as the Arthurian legends, but in creating her own fantastical world in her Darkover series. And as a Mozart fan, her characterizations of Tamino and Pamina don't really convince me, and like another reviewer on LibraryThing, I think there was a lost opportunity here to give the Queen of the Night, well, another voice.

I like the idea of this book (a retelling of The Magic Flute) but I didn’t much like the execution.

The love story between the two heroes is not believable and I found the author’s writing style quite tiresome. She will spend an entire paragraph explaining or describing a concept, and then in the next paragraph re-explain it.
I also found the ‘halflings’ in this very weird and creepy. Especially the bath scene.

I did finish the book though, so I didn’t hate it. 2.5 Stars.

This was a simple fairy-tale, somewhat tropey. The plot was probably out of MZB's hands as she was following the Magic Flute (I am not familiar with the plot of that so I don't know where if anywhere she departed from it).

This features insta-love with all the essentialist (yin and yang type) stereotypes of complementarity. I grew up in such a strongly misogynist culture that even this seemed feminist once upon a time but by 2019 it's really just tiresome to chew over stereotypes. This reads like a children's book but with a lot of sex, most of it rapey and violent- none of it graphic but nevertheless...I don't really want to read about Monsanto (not his real name but what I kept calling him in my head) trying to force Pamina quite so many times. She was also too pure in a book where practically every other character was sex-obsessed.

Nevertheless I gave it three stars. I must have liked something about the way it flowed and I do like the high-fantasy stuff about people's moral fibre even if it has been written one million times. I could have done without the "halflings are man's burden" at the end (shades of colonialist and imperialist understandings) and as I said the low-level but persistant sexism.

It probably shows just how bad many books are that I felt sort of neutral about this one.

Kurz zusammengefasst: Ich konnte wirklich so gar nichts damit anfangen.

I found this book very confusing. You don't really get a good look at this world and how it works so you are left to stumble through it. Many things are left unexplained and I didn't really care for the Characters, who didn't really have a whole lot of personality anyway. But I was entertained and it was a pretty fast read. I don't know the original story so I can't say how well it is adapted.

Not as good as many of her other books, but an interesting read. It feels like a very classical sword and sorcery fantasy. With a wee bit of "inner wisdom" Not what I would have picked up for myself, had it been an author unknown to me, but since it is her and I got it as a bookcrossingbook I thought I better give it a chance.

I had read another book by this author and really loved it so I was looking forward to reading this book. I was really disappointed. For me the story was really boring. The only redeeming factor for me was that it was short.

Feminist Mozart

Wonderful elaboration on Magic Flute, with Pamina and Papagena getting equql time with Tamino and Papageno, and a setting in a world of race and class.

I don't know what it is about this book that I love so much, but it's one of my favorites. I think it's out of print, at least it was when I tried to buy it, I had to go through Buccaneer Book Search & pay $40 for a used paperback with a creased spine (I hate creased spines), but at least I now own it. Marion Zimmer Bradley is just one of the greats in my mind, & this is one of her better books. It's so different from anything I've ever read. It's worth picking up, if you can find a copy.

A weird little book, based on the Magic Flute, with a liberal hand of Mithraic mysteries, Atlantean mythology and unspoken sexuality. Fun read,if a tad bewildering at times -- it makes more sense if you know the opera.

I liked the idea of the Halflings to explain the different characters and their motivations, but the story didn't go far enough beyond the opera for me to be really interested. At least Pamina did have more of an assertive role.
