Four children on a camping trip find themselves drawn back into South Africa's precolonial past. They find places in what is depicted as a spiritually nourishing, nature-attuned San culture, which leads to a startling decision. Surely no other time-travel novel has ever ended this way. This is a deeply moving and disturbing take on what the fantasy genre can mean in a South African context. It's cynical ending is a tremendous downer, but there is a slow-moving enchantment that builds through its pages nevertheless.
