Dr. Paul Wilson Brand, CBE (17 July 1914 – 8 July 2003) grew up in India, studied medicine in London, and practiced orthopedic surgery in India and the United States. He achieved world renown for his innovative techniques in the treatment of leprosy.
He was a pioneer in developing tendon transfer techniques for use in the hands of those with leprosy. He was the first physician to appreciate that leprosy did not cause the rotting away of tissues, but that it was the loss of the sensation of pain which made sufferers susceptible to injury. Brand contributed extensively to the fields of hand surgery and hand therapy through his publications and lectures, He wrote Clinical Mechanics of the Hand, still considered a classic in the field of hand surgery
He also wrote popular autobiographical books about his childhood, his parents' missionary work, and his philosophy about the valuable properties of pain. One of his best known books, co-written with Philip Yancey, is Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants (1993), republished in 1997 as The Gift of Pain.
Before his death in 2003, he received many honors, including the prestigious Albert Lasker Award and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
Excellent! Paul Brand looks at the ways we eat and share meals, and our digestive system. Nothing heavy: he intersperses very accessible science with anecdotes based on his extensive experiences as a surgeon working in both Europe and India. His speciality was leprosy patients in the middle of last century.
He uses analogies intelligently, looking at our spiritual lives and the ways God works, alongside the physical bodies. Towards the end of the book a couple of excellent chapters examine the elements of the Lord's Supper/Communion, in ways I had not previously considered.
Thought-provoking, extremely well-written, and educational too. Very highly recommended.
Dr. Brand takes different parts of the physical body and compares it to the spiritual life. Whether speaking to an audience of 8patients suffering from leprosy or speaking to an audience of thousands, Dr. Brand takes the same careful and thoughtful presentation of God's message. I would rate this as the best book I have read this year. I had trouble seeing so it was great that I had such a wonderful book to read.
Paul Brand has an excellent style of writing. His love for our Savior is apparent in his writing. There is so much packed into this little book. I do recommend it to others. There were just a couple of things that I just didn't quite think the same, but nothing alarming or of a serious nature.
I really liked this book. Simply written with profound insights, it taught me many new things, but it also gave me such awe and appreciation for the wonderful design of creation and its interconnectedness, its symbiotic perfection. The spiritual parallels were edifying and encouraging, and I've recommended this book to others. Dr. Brand was an amazing man. It is said that C. Everett Koop, MD and former U.S. Surgeon General, was asked: if he could have been born as any other person, who would it have been, and he said, "Dr. Paul Brand." Amazing man. The world was so much better for his having been among us.
