About the author

Marvin Neil Simon was an American playwright and screenwriter. He wrote more than 30 plays and he received more combined Oscar and Tony nominations than any other writer. He was one of the most reliable hitmakers in Broadway history, as well as one of the most performed playwrights in the world. Though primarily a comic writer, some of his plays, particularly the Eugene Trilogy and The Sunshine Boys, reflect on the twentieth century Jewish-American experience.

سوفي: تويِ زندگي چيزايي هس كه از اختيار آدم خارجه. بي هيچ دليلِ خاصي يه چيزِ غريب و مبهم بهمون حمله مي كنه و كسي هم كاريش نمي تونه بكنه غيرِ اين كه بشينه منتظر بمونه و اميدوار باشه اون چيزِ غريب به همون سرعتي كه اومده، دور شه و بره. بدبختانه، من مالِ خودمو حالا حالاها دورشدني نمي بينم...

چقدر من كَيف كردم از خوندنِ اين نمايشنامه ي ِخاص. شخصيتهاي پخته ، ديالوگهايِ قوي، پرداختِ خوووب، ربطِ نمايشيِ قشنگ، و صد البته مترجم حرفه ايي.

نمایشنامه دختر یانکی....
یک نمایشنامه طنز... که با نگاهی طناز به مشکلات امریکا دهه 70 می پردازد صرفنظر از نقد های سیاسی و سیاست زده من نمایشنامه رو به خاطر طنازی تحسین بر انگیزش دوست میداشتم.....وبنظرم نویسنده در پرداخت شخصیت ها تلاش کافی رو داشته شخصیتهای نورمن و اندی و سوفی به اندازه کافی قابل قبوله نورمن و اندی با هم یک مجله انتقادی رو اداره میکنن اندی به شدت به ارمان مجله پایبنده ونورمن به عنوان نویسنده، نه چندان متعصب به مجله و ارمان های اندی. تا اینکه پای سوفی دختری با اندیشه های راستی و رادیکال به داستان باز میشه... بی انصافیه اگه بگم داستان یه مثلث عشقی کمدیه!!!البته همه چیز از همون ابتدا برای خواننده روشنه. اما بیننده یا خواننده به خاطر نثر قوی دنبال نویسنده کشیده میشه. شخصا بعد از فضای بهت زده داستان وحشتناک بکت به فضایی چنین محتاج بودم....
سوفی:وقتی یه دیونه داشته همه جای انجمن دنبالم می کرد فرصت نداشتم چیزی رو برای کسی توضیح بدم.....در ضمن هدیه اش هنوزم داره به ادم های اون ساختمان نوک میزنه

سوفی:اردک!اون برام یه ادرک زنده اورد.ادرکه هنوزم اون جا داره کواک کواک می کنه و پاچه ی همه رو میگیره.وقتی داشتم می امدم مربی ژیمیناستیک از حلقه بسکتبال اویزون شده بودو اون پرنده دیونه دور استخر و بالای تخته شیرجه داشت دنبال مربی 73 هنر میکرد.

الان که تمومش کردم اگه مجبور نبودم برم ناهار رو آماده کنم دوباره «اَدَسَر»‏ می خوندمش. تقریبا مطمئن بودم گلوی این اندی و سوفی پیش هم گیر می کنه. هرچند که تقریبا همیشه از یه جایی به بعد دستِ نیل سایمون برای آدم رو می شه و می تونه حدس بزنه توی پرده ی بعد چه اتفاقی میفته ولی‏ این باعث نمی شه که آدم نمایشنامه شو در وان سیتینگ نبلعه.‏
هر کی اینو نخونه به جرات نصفه عمرش بر فنا رفته.‏

اگر اشتباه فنی نکنم توی تشخیصم، نیل‌سایمون یک طنز موقعیت نویس معرکه‌است! نمایشنامه‌هاش مضمون‌های ساده‌ای داره. ساده و قابل حدس. اما چیزی که نمایشنامه‌هاش رو جذاب می‌کنه بده بستون‌های کلامی بین‌ کارکترهاشه. زنده‌باد به دیالوگ‌نویسی‌های کریزی‌وار جناب سایمون!

نورمن: پلیسو خبر کرد... اونام منو بردن تو ماشین گشت.
اندی: می‌دونستم. می‌دونستم.
نورمن: می‌خوای قضیه‌ی منو بشنوی؟
اندی: من هنوز از قضیه‌ی پلیسا درنیومده‌م.
نورمن: می‌دونستی داریم تو یه حکومت پلیسی زندگی می‌کنیم؟
اندی: متوجهم. اولش با کتاب‌سوزی شروع می‌کنن، بعدشم نمی‌ذارن مردا برن تو استخر زنونه.

Supposedly, this play is a comedy. I'm not laughing. The Main Reason = the way the male characters treated the female character is absolutely abhorrent.

Andy and Norman run a left-wing protest magazine, and live in the apartment right next door to Sophie, an "all-American" conservative girl. Norman, the actual writer behind the magazine, quickly becomes obsessed with Sophie after she moves in next door, and his erratic behavior becomes even more insane as he tries to win over her affection. The lengths he goes to are incredibly invasive and creepy by any standards, but his actions are clearly meant to rouse laughter from the audience. Sorry, I just don't think that stalking, scaring, and (yes!) sexually assaulting a woman is a laughing matter.

There's also Andy, the publisher of the magazine, and his behavior towards Sophie is just as intolerable. Because Sophie happens to be a conservative woman, Andy immediately labels her as stupid and uneducated, and then proceeds to verbally mistreat her. This, again, is supposed to really crack the audience up, but it's not funny at all. It's downright abusive. Coupled with the fact that Andy does nothing to stop his best buddy Norman from terrorizing Sophie, and then starts to get the hots for her himself - while putting the blame for his sexual urges all on her! - and this play starts reading more like a horror story of workplace harassment than a romantic comedy.

I understand that this play was meant to show that people of opposite ideologies can get along and find worth in each other's ideas, but it doesn't read that way, especially after the advent of the #MeToo movement. Instead, this is a story about a young, independent woman who is slowly and methodically defeated by two men: one a absolute pervert and the other a rude chauvinist who turns a blind eye to sexual assault because, in his mind, the woman deserves it.

This is Neil Simon at his best. His other plays prove him to be a master of both witty humor and characterization, but there are several of his works which lack really captivating plots. That is not the case here. The story is original, intriguing, and complimented by the constant laughs which accompany it. I would rank this one up with "Broadway Bound" and "The Odd Couple".

نورمن : در موردِ یه چیزی حق با تو بود. جذابیتِ جسمی کافی نیس مثِ آدامسِ بادکنکی می مونه. اولش به نظر خوشمزه می‌آد، ولی مزه‌ش زیاد طول نمی‌کشه!

As Andy, the salesman, and Norman, the writer, try to "make it" as a new magazine publisher in a small apartment in California, the new neighbor Sophie arrives, with whom Norman madly falls in love. Sophie is greatly annoyed with Norman's expressions of affection which finally leads to her being fired from her job. She reluctantly started working for the magazine with Andy and Norman, and one day she confesses her "physical attraction" to Andy. Norman finds out about this and becomes furious. In the end, however, Andy and Norman make up, and Andy realizes his attraction for Sophie and they get together.

Very funny comedy.

Neil Simon once said that a reviewer wrote about this play, "Neil Simon didn't have an idea for a play, so he wrote The Star Spangeled Girl." Simon said that it was a learning experience for him. Always have an idea before you write. He was correct.

This is the most different flavored of Simon’s plays that I’ve read so far. Act 3 made me laugh out loud multiple times. The story is clear and funny, probably one of his best I’ve read yet.

I think this is one of my favorite Neil Simon plays. I was not as familiar with it when I chose to read it - but I think it is just as good! It is about two struggling writers who are putting together a magazine from their tiny New York apartment. Trouble ensues when a cute Southern girl moves in across the hall and one of the writers becomes obsessed with the woman; so much so he actually causes her to lose her job. She is engaged to a marine who does not look on the infatuation with much regard.

I had a lot of fun reading this play. It only has three actors in it - two men and a woman, but they are so funny you don't need anyone else. I would really enjoy seeing htis on stage. I love the banter between Sophie and the men; it is witty and funny. Although there were times when I thought, "holy cow, this man is crazy stalking this woman," they were so funny in their dialogue and the way they handled the situation of NOrman being head over heals in love with SOphie (b/c of the way she smells, I might add) that it didn't feel creepy...just crazy, fun!

Possibly my least favorite of Neil Simon's plays. A young man falls for a young woman who lives next door. He becomes obsessive about her. She eventually falls for his roommate, and it all comes out rather flat, and not very funny. Very disappointing.
