"As I purchased my shinkansen (bullet train) ticket, I used a combination of English, Japanese and mime to ask the clerk, 'Doesn't this song drive you nuts?!'"One week after graduating from law school, Deborah Bryan ditched studying for the Bar exam in favor of teaching English in Japan. In her group letters back home, collected here, she captures her utter lack of regret for having done so.
Deborah Bryan is a writer hailing from the Pacific Northwest and, not coincidentally, now living in Long Beach, California. She is the author of several novels, the first of which she is thrilled to have edited in just six short years. She's currently working on more writing and editing projects than she can count, and loving every minute of it.
This book was interesting to me for many reasons. One of those reasons being that I've marked Japan on my world map as a place to see. My husband was stationed there before we met, and it's always seemed like an intriguing place. Deborah brings Japan to life in the readers mind in this book, that is personal and familiar. I had a clear vision of the scenes about which I was reading, and Deborah's writing made me feel as though I were experiencing everything through her own eyes. Wonderful read, hard to put down. Highly recommended.
