I have the first edition printed in 1932. Not that interested in revising the information here.
I am not quite sure how serious a book this is. The last two chapters could be called on misogyny and self-hate. Lots of fun taunts and stuff. Most of the book is in other people's words with the interspersed sections matching the same type of older style of sentences. They are compound with many subclauses; ideas separated by semi-colons with the beginning wrapping back to the end; often having quotes as the meat of the section.
It is somewhat scholarly but reminds me more of the scholar argument in footnotes from the illuminatus chronicles. A whole world happens in asides.
It was a fun read and a fairly exhaustive list of why folks hate books. I think there would be no more than one or two new ones possible to add.
What an amusing little time capsule of times gone by. From forwarding quaint notions like women not being fit to read and the advent of printing bringing the end of good books, it's a heck of a head slapping ride.
