After being estranged for a year, Ben and David are back together and more in love than ever. Their commitment ceremony is approaching, and they've taken the chance to extend a business trip to Paris into a pre-commitment, pre-honeymoon break.
They owe their present happiness to Barbara, who has a problem only they can solve, and rubies are involved. Ben has plans of his own - but they owe her too much to turn her down.
Ben and David were introduced in Chris Quinton's Breaking Point.
Chris started creating stories not long after she mastered joined-up writing, somewhat to the bemusement of her parents and her English teachers. But she received plenty of encouragement. Her dad gave her an already old Everest typewriter when she was about ten, and it was probably the best gift she'd ever received – until the inventions of the home-computer and the worldwide web.
Chris's reading and writing interests range from historical, mystery, and paranormal, to science-fiction and fantasy, mostly in the male/male genre. She also writes male/female novels in the name of Chris Power. She refuses to be pigeon-holed and intends to uphold the long and honourable tradition of the Eccentric Brit to the best of her ability. In her spare time [hah!] she reads, embroiders, quilts and knits. In the past she has been a part-time and unpaid amateur archaeologist, and a 15th century re-enactor.
She currently lives in a small and ancient city in the south-west of the United Kingdom, sharing her usually chaotic home with an extended family, two large dogs, fancy mice, sundry goldfish and a young frilled dragon (Australian lizard) aka Trogdorina.
David and Ben have been deliriously happy back together, and are taking the next step. They are going to have a civil ceremony and tie the knot. They head off to Paris for a pre-wedding honeymoon, and are enjoying themselves when Barbie manages to destroy the ambiance. She demands their help to solve a puzzle which will net her some fab earrings from her rich lover.
The guys are less than thrilled to help solve the puzzle, but once Ben gets started on solving something, there’s no calling him off. A large part of the book is them trying to solve the puzzles while running around Paris looking for the clues as Barbie needs to find the prize before her lover gets back that night. There were some cute aspects such as the actual clues to the crossword puzzle which you could answer as well if you were smart enough (I wasn’t). There is more emphasis on solving the puzzle in this story, than the relationship as they are happy and getting married, so I think I enjoyed the first one more because the emphasis was entirely on the relationship.
The one thing that did not work for me so well this time was Barbie. Or should I say Barbie again. I didn’t like her much last time although I gave her some benefit since she apparently was instrumental in setting the guys up. She’s all over David and practically begging to be let into bed with them, yet also apparently has the hots for the rich lover, although I suspected only because she likes VERY expensive jewelry. She is supposedly their best friend, but was quite whiney, demanding and self-centred and I generally didn’t care for her much.
The author does have a light touch with the humour which makes it an enjoyable read. I have to say I’ve never read anything by the author before and I will definitely be looking for more books, something a bit longer perhaps where I can see the characters develop over time, however this is a cute little duo of stories that make you quite happy the two guys found their HEA and they seem to be perfectly suited.
Good short m/m romance about two guys who'd really rather spend the day in bed together, but get up to help an annoying friend with her scavenger hunt clues.
