Undesirable

Rate this book
At the height of the Cold War, vampires came out of the closet and staged a coup to save humans from destroying themselves. All the Vampire protectors wanted in return was a simple monetary tithe and, of course, blood. But not George Handle's blood. He tastes foul. Maybe. Possibly. Okay, that might be a lie. Shit. Getting home from a business trip becomes very hard when every vampire around is suddenly after your skin.

This was awesome through and through. It feels like ages since I enjoyed a vampire fic so much! It was unique replete with quirky humor, fast paced story-telling and interesting likable characters. I'm surprised at how well written it is and still manages to be a freebie.

In the middle it kinda got a little boring and I was wondering why the added twist with Wally and Abram 'n all but the author ties everything up quite nicely at the end.

RECOMMENDED!!!

Amusing and droll for a vampire blood slave tale. Spent a lot of time smirking and enjoying. A bit long on the road trip and a bit heavy on the didacticism at times, but entertaining. While this is primarily MM there are several sexual configurations depicted.

Why would vampires want humans stripped of our rights, liberty, and free will? Oh... simple... very simple... to keep us as... Sheeps.

With the possibility of an atomic war, during the 80's (The cold war period) something happened... vampires took control of all human millitar facilities, in all the world. Dividing zones between Patrons (like a vampire clan boss), each single human of the world had their lives controlled.
Humans were categorized, by colors. Each color (black, white, yellow, brown, red...etc) had a specific significance: how exquisite the blood tasted.
Everything done to one purpose: to avoid a world war, destruction, death... so help humans... to help humans.... to help humans?
but it's really an altruistic action? Vampires really are good? Asking just few drops of blood, no killing at all, as the price to keep such eternal peace... it's the Utopia? A perfect society?

This is George Handle story. He is an ordinary man, working and living with no high expectations. He, like as humans, are always terrorized by the strange and unknown powerful vampires that control the world... but why he must care? He is an undesirable, a black card human, with a blood considered not good at all he is ignore by the vampire society. But, after a sick game of one specific vampire, this ordinary human live will end... and the story of his fight for freedom will start.

**********WARNING: not for the faint of heart**************
Noncon... Oh yeah... Rape. Multiple rape scenes.
Kidnapping
Cruelty (example: chastity belt use, to inflict pain, not pleasure)
********************************************

PLEASE DON'T READ IT if you can't take rape... it's not a sweet love story, or a romance (at all, even if there is a sweet love story at a certain part, it's not that strong to erase all the disturbing rape scenes)

BUT PLEASE READ IT if you are curious because I was also scared to death (I knew it was full of noncon) I'm so glad I read it! It's a story that will surprise you, in a bad and good way.

It's a freebie, but the quality of the story and the writing is really superb. There is no vampire stereotypes, just a bunch of original ideas, that the writer in a marvelous way used to tell the story... of a human fighting too keep his liberty... and his sanity.

This boasts an amazing set-up and the opening third really delivered on the crazy-ass premise. I have an entirely demented love for dark erotica stories where the MC tries to escape and then gets hunted down, so the chase/capture scenes were so much (free) crack for me. But once the escape part 2 began, the story devolved into what we might call free-fic-sprawl, a mostly episodic, meandering journey that made no sense in terms of the plot that had been established and thus felt either random or extraneous and took the story miles away from what for me had been the core interest.

All that being said, I couldn't put it down, and while the second part didn't live up to the premise it wasn't a chore to read either. I'll probably reread the first third again since the premise really rocked my psycho-non-con-loving heart. Also it's free.

Bottom line: recommended for those who will like this--you know who you are.

So, I'm going to be mean and say this gets 3.8 stars.

There were a few things that bothered me.

However, despite all that, I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the original elements brought into the mix , I enjoyed the ever present element of danger and George's ingenuity in evading them. I even overlooked the grammar errors. I suppose I would have given this over 4 stars if it had contained more about Jeffrey and George .

An interesting AU story where Vampires come out of hiding to end the Cold War in 1982. As a result, Vampires rule society, being free to call anyone with "tasty" blood into Service (i.e. provide blood and sex) at any time, while those who have less pleasant tasting blood, or who have physical flaws - Undesirables - pay a tithe to their local Lord Protector.

George's blood has been labelled as Undesirable, so when he is called into Service as part of a Vampire Lord's game, his whole world is suddenly turned upside down. Instead, the Vampires find that he is, in fact, a Desirable of the highest order. And so begins a road trip from Hell, with George trying to escape his Service, and Vampires feuding over who has the right to him, even when trying to capture or re-capture him. All George really wants is to go back to his old life... It takes George time to realize, perhaps a bit longer than it should, that it's now impossible to go back, and that the best he can hope for is a compromise.

An intriguing original m/m paranormal romance from online writer Velvet Mace. Plenty of typos but the well-written storyline draws you in nevertheless.

Vampires have taken over ruling the Earth and keep harems of humans in order to feed. George had been mistakenly designated as 'undesirable' or 'black' signifying that his flavour is awful. Lord Jeffrey calls George to serve him while George is visiting Chicago as part of a joke and discovers that George is actually a rare addictive 'white' flavour. And so the adventure begins..

'Shuddering, I thought of the way Jeffrey had used me the night before. How physically helpless I felt when he tore out my wrist on the sofa. The way he'd slid into my mind and manipulated me into doing everything, feeling everything he wanted, regardless of my feelings on the matter. And now I felt caught in his attention like a fly in a web.'

I read this post by post and I couldn't wait for the next chapter to come out. My only complaint is that I want a sequel!! It's good.

Vampires run everything. Humans are graded on the favor of their blood. If they are yummy they are brought into a harem...if they want to be or not. Our little protagonist was classified as *ick* however it turns out that should have been *caviar* and soon every vampire is after him as he tries to get home.

I really simplified it but it's a gorgeous sexy read.

Two thumbs up for Velvet Mace!

If you think this story is a VAMPIRE-HUMAN ROMANCE, then stop right there, because it is NOT. It's a great ADVENTURE story though(albeit a bit boring at some parts). I truly think that is why I didn't enjoy this. Because I kept expecting George and Jeffery to get together. I know, I KNOW! It wouldn't work cause Jeffery is a vampire and George is human, the power imbalance is too much, but still that's what I expected so when I didn't get it, I was really and truly disappointed. It's like I kept forcing myself to read this for nothing.

As an author you should be able to convince your reader of the pairing you want to establish. That was the other flaw. I just didn't believe in Wally and George's relationship. It might be because I don't generally like Friends-to-Lovers kind of romances, but I just didn't think they would last. It seemed so unexpected when it was introduced and then suddenly they were being all lovey-dovey in a restaurant, and getting jealous. There was nothing leading up to it in my opinion.

These were honestly my only problems with this, but they mean a lot to me. I normally read only romance, and if I do read an adventure or action novel I'd like to know in advance so I don't get my hopes up. This book started with an ORGY! Usually if a book has sex, it's a romance, but nope, not this one.

I liked this story in it's own way, but it just didn't measure up. I feel like I wasted a good couple hours of my time.

I found the ending to be completely idealistic although the unpredictability of the whole story was pleasantly surprising. The funny start did push me deep into the story, but by the time the humor toned down I was in too deep and it was the plot that captured my attention.

Characters are extremely interesting and it's really impossible to predict which way the story will go. I did assume this and that, but it switched so many times I honestly had no idea and the finishing touch was for me unforeseen.

It is written well, intriguing as well as connected with a good story to back it all up. As such I do recommend it. As for my remark - I missed the romance. Although the existing one was nice and sweet, I was hoping for something more substantial and without so many situations which 'don't count'. In that part I was disappointed.

Had a good start, nicely written, but I'm not going to fluff it. I hated this. It's just my opinion because of the content, mind you I'm not squeamish in the least bit. It's just that I felt I was given false hope by the synopsis. George the Mc, isn't going to roll over for anyone, but it's like everything was hopeless and there wasn't any way out. So, I stopped reading. I won't finish it, because it's not for me. The scale for balance between power was tilted in favor of vampires, that seem in my opinion, to rule the world. Of course I can't exactly say much on this as I don't know what the other half of the book contains in terms of storyline, plot, character development and the eventual outcome. I don't mind books that takes me on a roller coaster ride through hell in back, dipping and diving in the Mc's into depression, hopelessness and unpleasant experiences, so long as a book levels itself back onto a plain field. To be fair you are warned out right what the book will entail, so I can't really complain about the content. I think I just disliked the story or more or less the aspect of any Mc justifying any form of rape with a Oh-I-like-them plot device, at least realistically speaking. But hey, that's just my opinion on the issue. People are free to like their choice of book, be it realistic or non-realistic. If certain pet peeveish issues don't bug you them go for it. If you're annoyed with MC betches with little to no real ability to defend themselves or turn their situation around go for it. (of course this is without me having read the other half so what do I know. *shrug*

A completely addictive, obsessive read.
Okay, some of the foreshadowing was a little ham-handed, and the logic at the end was a little weak.
But seriously, I'm not about to quibble after staying up all night to read this in one single sitting.

Must read!

This fic gave me glorious dark circles. It's like crack. I had hard time putting the book down and found myself reading past midnight hours. I am still very much puzzling over why since the book is not without its flaws. Perhaps it is simply because the author is a great storyteller. Not every author is good at telling stories. That's why some books turns out mediocre or unoriginal and readers had hard time trying to finish it.

Undesirable is an alternate universe story where vampires overthrown humankind and ruled Earth with humans as their indentured blood slave. Humans are graded according to how their blood taste. George Handel our protagonist just happens to fall into the highly desirable category which is very rare blood type for these gourmet vampires. George is not happy at all with his newfound status and try to escape the system. This starts a wild run and chase game that stirred up quite a bit of havoc. The vampires had a fun treasure hunt while the prey suffered considerably as he tries his best to get his old life back.

The author is pretty good at creating atmosphere and evoking emotions in the reader. I would say this strongly compensates the other weaknesses found in the story. The characters are lively and interesting bunch though they did lacks depth. I believe the excitement and thrill of 'the chase' distracted most of this inadequacy as well as other flaws. From time to time I find the characters making not too bright decisions although they did have better alternatives on hand. Then I would think, "Why would they choose the long hard way to do it?".

The concept for the vampirism in Undesirable is pretty original and refreshing. VelvetMace has created an interesting world for these supernatural creatures. I was not too happy when mind-control was introduced into the story. Mind-control is not what I like in my erotica cos it makes non-consensual situations less fun. In Undesirable, most non-consensual situations turned dubious as the prey became puppets to the vampires. Initially this made me apprehensive if I could really enjoy the story. Surprisingly the author managed to pull this off rather well and sex is still as fun and it does not entirely strike off my favorite non-con element. Yes, there is a whole lot of mind-fucking here. Somehow the author makes these situations tantalizing.

I actually don't get why some said this isn't MM Romance when there is romance in the story, just not with whom you may wish it to be. Too bad I can't say too much here without spoiling. Maybe it is because the romance part was faded into the background as the story mainly focus on George's big adventure of out-running and outwitting the pack of overzealous blood suckers going after the most delicious donut in the box. The world is against him and he is all alone to fend for himself. Oh, how fun!

George may be the protagonist but Jeffrey is my favorite character. He is a cunning manipulative little devil. He is so much fun to be with, for the readers that is. George avoids him like a plague and I don't blame him. Haha. Believe it or not, Gregory is my next favorite character. I find him sexy and alluring. Alright, I am Team Gregory! Personally I think that George would do well with him as his master aka Patron.

So yeah, there's good, there's bad. All in I would say is read it, it's worth it. I gave this a four stars in view of all the above and for the fact that this story is staying in my head for sure. That, is what counts most.

So this book is available for free online. If you google it you'll probably find it, it's on livejournal and on adult fanfiction's website. And, ugh, boy, what do I want to say about this one? So I actually read this like ten years ago. Then the past week Ive been sick with covid and was looking for some smut to read and I stumbled upon this one again and remembered it being a dark fantasy but couldn't remember the details, so I re-read. And it is hot, in the dark fantasy way.
As can be expected with dark fantasy genre, it contains morally questionable content, including sexual slavery, that's to be expected, not a surprise. But, it deals with chattel slavery and specifically sets up a comparison to the historical slavery of africans and that's where I was kind of left feeling like, "wtf" a little bit. Because the comparison is set up in your mind, but then it's also like "but the vampires aren't bad, they serve a natural purpose of keeping the humans in check, because humans can't take care of themselves, they would make a mess of the world, they need vampires to control them." And that was just so echoing of the justification for actual historical slavery of black people that it really made me wince. And then also it was like "And we can't expect the vampires to not have slaves, it's only natural, this is how they're made. And, they would starve if they had to wait for a human's consent, they have to be rapists." And I just... you know? And then the end is like " vampires and humans are the same and we will live in harmony" and I was like okay, yeah, sure, but I've still got this historical slavery comparison running in my head and what exactly are we saying here? So idk, like, it is still hot, if you like your smut dark, but the comparison to real history was like, also offensive... Which, on one hand, you're like, "Well, yeah. Suspending morality kinda comes with the genre" but on the other hand, "Ugh. No. Why did we leave it sitting like that?"
There were parts when the author was specifically like "racism is bad. And Vampire's mind control can help get rid of racism." And when the historical comparison was brought up in the story they were like "Oh but, what we do? What we do is totally different. Racism is bad" but, like, that didn't really work out, because once the topic was brought up and the comparison made, I just continued seeing all of the story as a comparison. So, it became an allegory with the shadow of race history laying over everything from then on. So then everything said about the vampire slavery felt like it was also being said about historical slavery, you know? Which maybe the author intended, to an extent, but it meant that the conclusion of the story also still felt like a statement about racism and historical slavery, which i don't think the author intended (I don't think?).
I feel like maybe if there was a book two, or just more chapters focused on making vampires change their treatment of humans, because yeah, it ends with the mission of improving conditions for humans, but also with the idea of compromise and understanding being needed to make sure vampires still got what they needed/wanted since apparently that's in the world's best interest, and so i was kinda like... are we also saying that black people should be more understanding of white people's slavery and be willing to compromise when it comes to accommodating white people's drive for superiority? And maybe the world is better with some level of slavery because....Like, I don't think the author meant that AT ALL, but it was the uncomfortable message that was left bouncing around for me at the end... so yeah... trigger warning for slavery, i guess?

It was really well written and every part of the book was entertaining and inexpected. The end was also good and fulfilling.
It is definaly a must read. I simply didn't give it five stars cause it isn't the kind of story I personaly like the most.
It was an awesome book however, and I really recomend.

An agreeable novel with a refreshing take on vampires. The world-building was flawless and that's the main reason why I enjoyed George's journey. However I feel like it lacked something, maybe some character's consistency or a pass on the unnecessary lengths...

It started off so interesting...and then kinda turned into a bit of a pornfest, at which point I wasn't so bothered about it anymore...and then by the end, well, it was all right I guess.

I'll admit I was kinda hoping for him to end up with Jeffrey and Wally could just go do one for all I cared but oh well, obviously not what the author had in mind.

Hmm...another vamp fic, that I wasn't entirely in love with. Maybe this genre doesn't suit me. I skimmed some of the mid chapters having to do with Chuck.

I am not sure why I kept reading this. It was mostly to see if at the end Geo gets himself killed. I found Geo's character kind of unlikeable. Meaning that this would not be a person I wouldn't want to have as a friend. Maybe a distant cousin or crazy uncle I see once a year. He is contrary character and stubborn to a fault. While I see that the things he wants are considered basic human rights in American society today. I just can't picture the same for a character living in the depiction of the story. He has no amount of self-preservation and is absolutely stupid and fool-hardy in his attempts to escape and escape plans. Not once did he ask Jeffrey how he treated his harem members or what he would have to do. Not once did he find out if it would be acceptable or amenable at all to him. He rejects things out right for the sake of rejecting it.

While it is true his first encounter with Jeffrey was terribly uncouth, I think the inability to even think about things from another point of view is extremely childish. This is my biggest problem with the book is Geo's absolute childish behavior at every turn. No planning no fore thought at all. The only adult things he has to say is at the very end when he finally comes to a point of deciding how to help humanity and vampires. While I think this was suppose to be seen as growth of his character, I found it out of character for him. He thinks of only himself at every turn. Even though he has concerns for Valetina it's a whitewash to his "me, me, me" personality which is shown by his biggest concern that he could be bought by the persona and be bred with her.

Geo is an idealist, and perhaps others thought the end was just the epitome of his personal growth. However for me it was out of character. It was a fast forward of personal growth where we saw zero personal growth at all. While I skimmed the chapters having to do with Chuck I do not believe I missed much, since I still read much of it. He was still idealistic, compounded when he even asked Chuck if he could drive a truck. He still living in this fictional world, where he can be in this underground resistance movement. It's only when this is shattered by Chuck that he even thinks of anything else. What is it? Well it's running away again, to OREGON. No growth at all. It's just a deus ex machina epitome, it's just random and doesn't make any sense.

In the end I liked the plot of the book, if not the characters. The characters I liked was Jeffrey and Darlene. I find it a sore spot, that I can't even root for the main character and his lover. Wally was lack luster and I felt no emotional involvement in his living or dying. I also liked the world the author painted.

If romance is what you are looking for this is definitely not the book. 3.5 out of 5.

What I like about this story was that the main character didn't have some sort of power. he was normal just like any other person except for his unusual tasting blood. The other thing was the totally unpredictability of the plot. There was no way of telling how the story was going to progress and end. Some parts got a little redundant and others didn't really make since, but on a whole and very good written story. this wasn't a story about someone with power over other people and it wasn't about one person being able to do everything. This was a story about a group effort. George couldn't have succeeded without everyone's help. even in the end he still had to rely on vampire's powers and compromise in order to get to a safe spot. He didn't even achieve his initial goal, his goal changed and evolved over time. This story was about progression and is a nice change from the normal power plays you see and supernatural stories.

The concept of vampires in this story is different from many of the vamp stories out there. They are all insufferable pricks who have no concept of free will. And blood has flavors! George is an ordinary, everyday sort of smart-ass who has more self-respect than to take their crap lying down. I love the fact that he runs away even though he knows he doesn't have much of a chance, just to keep his pride and feel like he is making his own choices. He is a bit of a prude, which normally I don't like, but under the circumstances it's understandable. Lord Jeffrey happened to be one of my favorite characters...I just loved his cheeky and sarcastic comments. I did feel that George's friend Wally was a little too much of a follower and there wasn't very much passion between them. Any gaps or slow points in the plot were made up for by the characters. It was a fun read!

I enjoyed this book, I really did. It's just that the plot seemed to... meander a bit in the last third. Yes, the leader of the anti-vampire resistance being an old and powerful vampire who was essentially just trying to preserve status quo was quite surprising, it just had paradoxically little impact on me. Note: Try not to introduce major players too late into the book, it leaves too little time to flesh them out. The fact that the ending reads like a sequel hook for a sequel that never materialized just aggravates matters.

As well crafted as the main characters are (I also enjoy the adapathetic acceptance of the present by the side characters) it still feels a bit rushed. I contemplated giving it 4.0 stars but it's not quite as good as the other 4.0 star books I've read, so 3.5 it is.

Funny and cute, i read the entire thing in a day, so the plot structure and characters were very interesting. The entire hing was completely unpredictable and was a wonderful adventure, not to mention the fact that i love lgbt fantasy works ^^} it was way cute, with enough smut to have a ball with but without getting drained and hurrying though it. I also like that vampires arent lovey dovey, ohi hate harming humans im rrally the good guy, theyre total bastards to the end, with very few exceptions to that rue. If you enjoyed tthe last pure human from twisted hilarity, or wish you coukd find a comical, slihtly less complex bloodraven by pl nunn, or a simplified cethe, im sure youll enjoy this :)

Pros:
*Jeffrey is awesome.
*"A Modest Proposal" reference.
*The paranoia that'll make a MC throw a championship 'cause he's awesome enough to win, but also awesome enough to lose on purpose.
*Loving the bisexual/bigotry theme -- never thought about anything like that, and that's just delicious in mind-expanding ways.
*MC's thoughts and POV are amusing.
*Conclusion was fabulous.
*(And props for a riveting summary that was fun to read I am itself. )

Cons:
*The constant escape theme drags and I'm disconnected from the story frequently.
*The smex is mostly dubious content at the least, and there's not nearly enough for me :[

At first I loved it but I suppose it just turned out to be not my thing towards mid-way. I stopped reading it and eventually lost complete interest in it. It's written well, and many others like it, but I wouldn't try to reread it.

From what I recall there was too much sex, and it felt like the author kind of threw in the best-friend romance too suddenly; I had no inkling there was even any kinds of feelings before. I felt like there should've been more development or hints before because it made me feel like the author was just trying to throw in more sex in the mix, by adding it.

Unpredictable in the best ways! Very welled planed. I was completely hooked and finished this in one day. My only complaint is how the relationship was set up at the end, I wanted more from George and Jeffrey. The 'okay let's be together' convo between George and Wally was weird too.
I usually don't like reads with their own world, because I'm usually really really confused but this always made sense.
Good read! 3.5*

Read it all and did not like it. Was teetering on the edge of two stars and then the climax...poof.
It just simply wasn't my cup of tea. Way too much mind manipulation and suddenly, out of nowhere a relationship blooms? Didn't buy that for a second. I am a tad ruffled by the way this book went about things...
Was waiting for some sense of satisfaction or closure by finishing this book, but got none.

I really liked George, but I guess that I'm just really not a non-con kinda gal.

Undesirable was a fun read. I wouldn't classify it as a romance, per se, but there were definite romantic elements involved. I think what I enjoyed the most was that the main character, George, was very likeable and the story itself was just unpredictable enough to keep me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Velvet Mace did a great job with it.
