Award-winning author-artist Lauren Mills has brought together a total of thirteen stories and sixteen poems of the little folk, illustrated with her radiant watercolor paintings. Retellings include favorites such as "Thumbelina" and "Tom Thumb", and lesser-known, but equally fascinating pieces such as the Ojibwa tale "Leelinau", and Swaziland's "The Moss-Green Princess". 120 watercolor illustrations.
A nice one time read. I enjoyed this book. I like the poems and some of the stories. My favourite stories are Vasilisa the beautiful (Russian), Anna and Tomtem (Swedish), Lushmore and the fairies (Irish), and Elves and the shoemaker (German).
The cover is really nice but the illustrations aren't all that great. They don't even cover half a page.
I really liked all the poems in this book. I honestly only picked up this book for the Irish tale Lusmore and the Fairies, the Swedish tale Anna and the Tomten, the Japanese Tale of Little One Inch and the Korean's tale The Goblin's Cap. I have already read the the German The Elves and the Shoemaker, the Russian Vasilisa the Beautiful, the Danish Thumbalina and the English Tom Thumb a few times over. However, if you are interested, there are also other stories from around the world in this book depicting fairy or small folk such as from Native North America/Ojibwa, Mexican/Mayan, Indian, Southeast African/ Swaziland, and Hawaian origin. It is an overall nice treasury and the illustrations are pleasant.
There was one story that I was familiar with, but most of them were new to me and I loved them all. I've been in love with faeries and such pretty much all of my life, and I can't wait to find more books about them.
A delightful romp through stories of elves, faeries, and Tomtens from around the globe. The illustrations are a wonderful addition and help to bring the stories to life. Worth reading for children and the children at heart.
