Beautiful

Ken Duncan's photography is stunning no matter what he takes pictures of, and this book was a delight to read through. So many unique views and places, combined with history and relevance.

In the Footsteps of Paul is a beautiful gift book that chronicles the life and ministry of Paul. The book is a mixture of photographs interspersed with quotations from Acts, brief reflections from Duncan, and quotations from well-known authors. Following the Acts narrative, the book weaves together the story of Paul's life both in word and picture. The images—mostly of landscapes and sites, but sprinkled with artifacts, and artwork—are of exceptional quality, and give life to the narrative. A number of the scenes are truly breath-taking, and make this book worthy of a place on a coffee table, in addition to its other merits as a worthwhile introduction to Paul's travels.

The carefully chosen excerpts from Acts and Duncan's brief comments help to narrate Paul's story, chronicling his movements around Palestine, Asia, and Europe, highlighting major events and important interactions. The narrative is also augmented by well-chosen quotations from biblical scholars such as Ben Witherington, N. T. Wright, and F. F. Bruce, and inspirational writers such as Henri Nouwen, Max Lucado, and Thomas Merton.

In all, the book is beautifully assembled and laid out. The pictures are stunning, and the text helps bring Paul's journeys to life. As Duncan says in his introduction, "I knew [following in Paul's footsteps] would challenge me in my own walk with God. . . . Paul was all in for Jesus." Through words and images, Duncan helps us to see Paul the person, a follower of Christ, dedicated to the mission God laid before him. While I would look elsewhere for a more rigorous introduction to Paul's life and thought, this book makes for a great primer on Paul, and a worthy visual companion to other studies, at times instructing and at times challenging us to follow.

In the Footsteps of Paul is a beautiful coffee table book(or as the publisher refers to it, “gift book”) which combines photography and scripture. The author follows the journeys of St. Paul using the Act of the Apostles as his source material. The two page spreads generally begin with a quotation from Acts and have two (but sometimes one, or more) photographs showing the area referenced. There is also usually some narration by the author or a quote from someone famous.

The photography is absolutely gorgeous. Either Photoshop did a great job or the blue of the Mediterranean is like no water I’ve ever seen. It matches the sky in places. Of course the photos were recently taken so they can’t completely illustrate the world as St. Paul knew it, but many of the pictures are of ancient ruins. Being from someplace as new as the United States, it is interesting to see those ancient aqueducts going through modern cities.

One thing I found helpful in the book was the maps showing Paul’s journeys and naming the towns discussed in Acts. I’ve seen the maps in Bibles, but these maps were followed by pictures of the places, making it easier to get a mental picture of what they must have been like at that time.

If you are trying to learn more about St. Paul during this Pauline year, but aren’t looking for heavy-duty reading, this book may be for you. I enjoyed it and it is landing on my keeper shelf, not in the giveaway box. Thanks to the Thomas Nelson Book Blogger program for sending me the book.

In the Footsteps of Paul: Experience the Journey That Changed the World is beautiful. It's a "coffee table" type book - mainly photos, but with text also. It follows Paul's life from his days as Saul until his death.

It's full of wonderful photos of places he visited, and each page also has Biblical text to go along with the photo, and also other quotes from John Piper, Billy Graham, and others.

It helps Paul's journeys come alive, much more than they do when you look at the little red- and blue-dotted lines in the maps at the back of your Bible.

I've been reading through a couple page of this book each night after dinner, showing the girls the photos so they can imagine the world Paul lived in.

I read a review someone wrote, complaining that many of the photos are described as "somewhere Paul most likely walked," etc. The reviewer was bothered by this lack of certainty. However, as someone who has visited the Holy Land (heck, even Europe), many things there are so old that it's virtually impossible to pinpoint exact locations. Our American perspective of "old" (say, 1776?) isn't so ancient in much of the rest of the world. Paul lived 2,000 years ago, so to see places he most likely lived and walked is just fine with me.

In the Footsteps of Paul by Ken Duncan is a good coffee table book. As many have said before there is not much writing to this book but the photographs that Mr. Duncan has take are breath taking. It make me want to travel to the land of Paul and visit the sites. It brings to life some of the major places in Paul's life and ministry. You can easily imagine in your mind's eye Paul walking down the roads, sailing into the harbors, preaching the gospel to the crowds in the different city and stadiums.

It would be a great tool for any Sunday school or Bible teacher to help flesh out the Life of Paul and the beginnings of the Early Church. The photographs just pop or jump off the page... I would love to see a DVD video of these places. I know other wish there was more text to this book but that was not the scope of this book - it was to bring to life the places that Paul had gone.

In conclusion, I would recommend this book to any Sunday school teacher, Bible teacher, or anyone else who wants to see where Paul and other apostles had travelled as the Early Church began the fulfillment of The Great Commission of Jesus Christ. (Acts 1:8)

I had the opportunity to review this book and I must say I’ve taken quite a bit away from it in my own walk with God. Some may say this is a great coffee table book (of which it is) filled with majestic pictures taken by renowned photographer Ken Duncan. It is an easy book just to pick up and flip through taking in the majestic artistic scenes from Paul’s journey in his life.

This books is what the title claims, it’s taking us in the footsteps of Paul as mush as it possibly can. Filled with beautiful photos to give us a visual of what he saw, each picture is paired with mostly KJV scriptures, powerful quotes from well know pastors and christian leaders, geographical commentary, and notes of explanations of what was going on at the time.

I didn’t want to rush the read on this book, I read a little bit each day to reflect on what he must have been going through. I think it’s great that I can see myself reading this to my children as they grow older and reflecting on it together.

I would say that this book is ideal as a reference book if you are studying the life of Paul or any of his writings. This is a book that is a perfect gift for just about anyone.

I loved this book. The pictures alone would have made a great book, but the descriptions and the "story" behind the pictures gave them that much more meaning. Seeing places that Paul traveled during his many journeys was sort of surreal. I think that Ken Duncan should be awarded for his ability to capture the scenes of these places in a way that portrays that enormous role they played in the bible.

Being that I don't have an intimate knowledge of Paul's travels I thought that I may be a little lost as to where these places were and their importance. The scriptures and notes that go along with the pictures made Paul's life and his tribulations clear to me.

At the very least this book is a great collection of photography. However I feel that the way the book was constructed allows the reader to have a accurate picture of the places Paul traveled as well as the significance of event that occurred during his travels.

In the Footsteps of Paul, Duncan follows the footsteps of the apostle St. Paul, whom Duncan calls "one of the greatest examples of what it is to be a Christain." Duncan sets out to follow St. Paul's travels in Acts closely and bring them to life on film. I think he has succeeded in his quest.

The opening photo of the Old Roman Road, with brilliant red poppies growing through cracks in stones, sets the stage for St. Paul's journey. "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia . . ." (Acts 22:3)

Some photos in Duncan's book are breathtakingly beautiful, others stunning in their simplicity.

The final page shows a photo of the pillar on which St. Paul was beheaded. Also at the end of the book is a quote from St. Paul to Timothy, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." This quote also sums up what Duncan set out to do and has accomplished in his inspiring book.

I LOVED reading this and enjoyed the pictures. It gave a perspective of Paul and his travels that I have never had before. A kind of guide to the Holy Land. The pictures show where Paul traveled, where he preached, where he was probably beheaded. The text gives a concise overview of Paul’s life. Good book and easy to read.

Book includes quotes of Christian leaders such as Philip Yancey, Max Lucado, et al.

Read about in WORLD magazine, April 25, 2009, p. 22.

NOTE: This is NOT the same book as F. F. Bruce’s In the Steps of the Apostle Paul.

I made the mistake of tying to read the ebook version of this. Pictures are too small but beyond that, the formatting is absolutely horrible. Words are broken and the text can at times be nearly impossible to read. If you want this book, avoid the ebook version. You'll be better off.
