In many ways, and on the surface, this story seems like one of the lighter reads in the series. There isn't a heavy-handed Dom, but there is a struggling (with his own self-image and needs) sub. The dynamic where it's clear (to the reader) that the Dom is actually in love with the prospective sub is an interesting one. For me, it makes everything easier to understand and more enjoyable. I guess that is because I prefer the "softer" variation of D/s stories, the one where love is involved. As tough as some of the scenes are, it puts everything into a totally different light.
The essence of this particular D/s relationship is the fact that Ben, who is a teacher and has to be in control in his job, has a need to let go when he is at home. Andrew, his flatmate and a cop, understands this and when he "takes charge" it is mostly because he wants to give Ben what he needs. The fact that they're very hot together and the love I mentioned above goes both ways, just makes everything even better.
This is another great addition to the Rawlings Men series - long may it continue!

Ball gags are really not my kink so I was prepared to feel a bit of meh about this one, but I couldn't have been more wrong. It fit these characters and the story so well -- just as Ben and Andrew fit together so well. I loved Ben as the activist tree hugger. We need more tree huggers in our fic! Ben (a teacher) carrying properly spelled & grammatically correct banners created by his students and other subtle touches layer in personal detail that shows instead of tells us who Ben is. Excellent.
A special nod to Kim Dare's contrasting of a spanking for punishment versus a spanking that isn't intended to punish and how the sub feels/responds to each. Deftly played.
A great addition to the Rawlings series and not to be missed.

I sometimes wonder if Kim thinks up the toy/title first and then thinks of a story to weave around it that makes sense, or if she decided on the story/characters first and then chooses the toy. I just thought that the ball gag was very appropriate for Ben. 3.5 stars.

Ballgags! Don't you wish you had a ballgag for that person that never shuts up? In this one, it's pretty cute. It's between Andrew and his flatmate, Ben the teacher. Ben doth protest too much. Andrew is there to show him the errors of his ways. When Ben goes against Andrew's wishes to attend a protest, Ben earns a hard OTK. WOOHOO! It's nice to have two men who are close in size and age to be together. I like how both men are just your average Joe. The ball gag was a nice touch. Recommended for m/m lovers who enjoy a bit of kink and hot law officers playing "teacher".

This one was cute because I loved the fact that Ben was physically bigger than Andrew yet Andrew was the top/Dom, while Ben was the bottom/sub. It started off very cute with Andrew patrolling a rally Ben is at. From there it gets pretty steamy when Andrew shows Ben what it's like to be dominated in the best of ways.

Roommates Ben and Andy couldn’t be more different. Andy is a cop who likes to be in charge, whilst Ben is a teacher who just wants to let go. Whilst they are best friends, the relationship can never be anything more, because self-professed Dom Andy doesn’t think that his roomy wants the type of relationship he’s offering. When Andy forbids Ben from attending a protest rally Ben decides he doesn’t need a part time Dom telling him what to do; he takes the role on full time or he keeps his opinions to himself. Andy grabs the opportunity to see the man he has been lusting after since day one, submit to him in any way he wishes.
Kim Dare is one of the few short story authors I will willingly pay for. Her stuff is as romantic as it is kinky. This is the type of story that makes you feel a little naughty, whilst filling you with the warm and fuzzies. I didn’t think that I would enjoy a story about spanking and ball gags but how wrong I was! Andy doesn’t ease Ben into the lifestyle even though he is a new sub. The first thing he does is punish him with a spanking for attending the rally...and there was nothing hot about this punishment; it was all about drilling the message home. The ball gag came out because Ben just couldn’t keep his mouth shut....He soon learnt that lesson. What became apparent was how well Andy knew his sub. He didn’t know his limits, or what his triggers were, because they had never played together before. He did know how he would react to certain situations and pre-empted things so Ben didn't get himself punished (i.e. the ball gag). I never think that BDSM is completely satisfying unless there is a sense of trust between the participants, and you could see just how much these two really knew, and loved, each other.
It was very kinky, with the story focusing more on the kink that the sex. I enjoyed the build up to the actual climax of the story but I would have liked it to be just a little longer, just to see how these two fared! A lovely steamy read, but it does come with all the usual content warnings for a M/M BDSM story.

This time, however, the protestor mouthing off to him is his roommate, Ben…whom Andrew expressly forbade from attending the demonstration. When things get out of hand and Ben is arrested, Andrew isn’t surprised that the seemingly well-mannered teacher manages to talk his way out of trouble. But he’s downright shocked when Ben continues to challenge him after the fact. It turns out that Ben has no desire to follow Andrew’s orders – unless Andrew delivers them as his Master. Andrew’s not one to back down from a challenge, especially now that he’s learned the roommate he’s been lusting after is a sub. And he’s got just the item to tame his new submissive...
The teacher becomes the student in the sassy HANDCUFFS AND BALL GAGS. Kim Dare packs a lot of heat in this fun story, adding in a dash of sweetness to deliver a wonderful erotic romance. Ben and Andrew are both likeable heroes who have an everyman quality about them, something I find quite appealing. From the start, it’s clear that there’s sexual tension between them and the leap from friends to lovers isn’t a great one. It’s easy to become entranced by Ben and Andrew’s story because HANDCUFFS AND BALL GAGS has both the comfortable feel of an established connection and the spark of uncertainty that the new sensual dynamic between them presents.
HANDCUFFS AND BALL GAGS is the sixth story in Ms. Dare’s RAWLINGS MEN series, but not having read the previous five stories, I can safely say that HANDCUFFS AND BALL GAGS can be read as a standalone. However, Ms. Dare has a seemingly effortless, entertaining style that is so charming I know it won’t be long before I go back and read the entire RAWLINGS MEN series.

I am a big fan of Kim Dare’s writing and subject matter. I have read many of her stories. I am always impressed by how she is able to basically take the same underlying theme but present us with new and different characters we care about as well as plot twists that make each read seem new again.
Her stories are pretty short but you really don’t feel cheated because she does such a good job of connecting you to the main characters in such a short time.
I plan on getting through all of the her books eventually but I am not going to review them all. I just wanted to note somewhere how much I like these books and since this is my most recent of hers, it seemed like a good place to do it!

Actually 4.5
While I have enjoyed all the Rawlings men I think this one is my favorite so far. Like all of them because of the shortness of the story it seems to move at quite a fast pace but in this story the relationship between Ben and Andy seem completely believable. The fact that they had been roommates for a while made the relationship and feelings seem as if they had progressed naturally.

I’ve really enjoyed seeing the range of kinks highlighted during each of these little short stories. I didn’t really expect the ball gag kink to trip a trigger, but it worked really well in the scene between Ben and Andrew and ended up being rather erotic. Since these guys were already friends, it seemed plausible they could jump more quickly into the D/s dynamic than pure strangers. Nice!

Two hot men and a power struggle permeated with an intense sexual attraction are just about as good as it gets. Ben is Mr. Perfection, in control and in charge in his classroom, but what makes him even sexier is his need to please Andrew. Andrew is so used to giving orders as a cop and a Dom, so it is great fun to see him so perplexed when it comes to Ben. There will never be a dull moment with these two, and I would be perfectly content to read more of them hour after hour.

Kim Dare knows how to write a sexy BDSM novella, and this is no exception. I didn't get hugely emotionally invested, but the guys had the appropriate progression through their relationship. It helped that they were friends/flatmates since they had some pre-exisiting relationship to build on. Although they each occasionally referred to the other as their "best friend" which I didn't see. They'd only been flatmates a few to several months and both seemed to constantly antagonize the other. But anyway.
Sexy ball-gaginess. Ben's sweet submission. Andrews cocky strong Dom hand. The ending was a nice strong HFN. The only problem (not the authors fault) is all the ads at the end made me think I had a good 30 pages left, so the ending felt a little sudden only because it caught me off guard.

2015 Re-read:
Another little story. Again, not among my favourites for this series, possibly due to the fact that I did not care much for either of the guys.
Still, it was sweet enough for what it meant to do. No real complaints.

Oh it still worked, but the characters and their dynamics just did not appeal to me. Maybe that’s why it failed to grip me in any kind of tension arc.
Admittedly, I also am a little disappointed about the complete lack of former protagonists in this one. I wanted to check up on the previous couple at the very least, darn it!

Really, I kept feeling Ben wasn't being true to himself.
I mean, this startling image was created of him in the first few scenes, but when he hit the point of his submission all of a sudden it was gone. He was okay with not questioning *anything*? In a scene that had no definite end?
Sure he made a list, but if he was as much as a borderline-control-freak as it sounded, there should have been a little more internal conflict and adjustment between dom and sub rather than just slamming into play and happily prancing along no-matter-what.

After getting arrested at a protest, Ben offers his flat mate his submission. Andrew jumps at the chance. Ben is released with no charges but Andrew still believes he deserves punishment. Since Ben is quite able to talk his way out of trouble, Andrew uses a ball gag in their first session together. Andrew makes the rules quite clear and they admit that they have fallen in love with each other.
