A bold and unconventional tribute to artistic collaboration by two internationally recognized, award-winning authors. Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston have made beautiful quilts together despite their physical distance from each other—the stunning photos of their many creations prove it. They reveal the secrets of their success, including how to bridge style differences and use each person’s strengths to best advantage. Freddy, an expert in color, discusses her specialty, while Gwen talks about design principles. In addition, each artist offers ten personal tips and structured and unstructured projects to try, as well as ideas for putting them all together. A gorgeous gallery of quilts is sure to inspire needleworkers to combine forces. A Selection of the Crafters Choice Book Club.
I recently sat down with this book again for the first time in years. It’s just as good now as it was then. Especially now when so many how-to books or patterns are so reliant on buying and working with one line of fabric, a book that encourages you to buy what you like, use what you like, and make it your own feels almost iconoclastic. To be fair, it was iconoclastic when it was written, but it hasn’t lost any of its power.
Unknowingly, I bought an autographed used book! Imagine running your fingers over the impression of Gwen Marston and Freddy Moran's signatures! What a combination they are. I read their second book first, and had to see where this collaboration started. I read these books over and over- they are a "start anywhere and go everywhere" type of books. Practical and inspirational.
The collaboration and 'parts department' process these 2 artists use is interesting. I am especially fond of some of Gwen Marston's work and this book has a nice bunch of photos of her quilts, home, studio. Freddy Moran's color sense is.... invigorating? "Red is a neutral. I've never met a single color that didn't look better with red. My definition of a neutral is the color foundation on which other colors can be built."
Excellent motivator. This book shows the quilting organization and style of two women, Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston, and then looks at collaborative projects. It ends with instructions for making special uneven designs and patterns. No expenses have been saved in producing this book with so much bright beauty.
One of the best reasons for buying this book is the huge number of photos. It is amazing how many photos of quilts and blocks the publisher was able to cram into this book for the price. I also like the idea of collaboration between the two artists.
