The vampires want it. The demons want it, too. And someone is willing to kill Val for it.

Val and Fang have to find the powerful Encyclopedia Magicka before either of San Antonio's warring underworld factions locate it or the consequences will be deadly for the entire city. As usual, Val's vampire enemies (they still call her The Slayer) want her dead. Even some of her fellow demons may be less than trustworthy, since they'd like to grab the legendary book of spells before she does. Val has a personal claim to the Encyclopedia - her demon father left it to her when he died - but someone stole it recently. And that can't be good.

Battling vamps and dodging demons, Val struggles to unravel the mystery and find the thief. At the same time, she's fighting her attraction to sweet, sexy Shade - her favorite shadow demon. Rumor has it that Val will lose her part-demon, vampire-fighting powers if she gives herself to him.

With a crowd of vamps and demons out to trick her or kill her, it's not a good time for her to risk her job as the city's best vampire hunter by falling in love. The stakes are high and aimed right at her heart. But Lola, Val's hungry little lust demon, doesn't like being denied. Will Lola finally get her way?

What's a part-lust-demon-teen supposed to do? Whatever it takes.

Who is Parker Blue? Well, I live in Colorado Springs with my dog, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Val's part-hellhound mutt, Fang.

I hate writing bios so that's all you're gonna get. Okay, okay. Instead of more boring bio stuff, how about some of my likes and dislikes?

Stuff I love, in no particular order:

- The color red—a bright, orange-red just makes me happy.
- Shiny things. I must have been a magpie in a previous life.
- Making shiny things. Love to bead!
- Dogs—they love you unconditionally and are great at stress relief.
- Numbers. So sue me—I love math. It always makes sense.
- Chocolate. Come on, that's a no-brainer.
- The mountains of Colorado. Their awe-tastic beauty is good for the soul.
- Diet Coke. What can I say? I'm addicted.
- Reading. Escaping into a cool new world someone created out of their imagination? It doesn't get much better than that.
- Oh, yeah. And writing. Making up my own world out of random bits of my twisted psyche is the best!

Things I'm not so crazy about, besides the obvious things everyone hates (war, pestilence, famine, you know the drill):

- Blogs that dis other people. What's up with that?
- Going to the dentist. Need I say more?
- Politics. Big yawn.
- Television shows that ask people do stupid things for money then make fun of them.
- Seafood. Ick. Just...ick.
- Yard work. I need lawn gnomes!
- Writing bios. Enough already!

As for the drawings...no, they don't really resemble me much, but this is what I figure Parker Blue ought to look like, kind of geek chic. Torie Fox drew them for me—isn't she fabulous?

This again picks up just a couple of days later from the other book. So it is pretty seamless reading from one to the next. Val and Shade are an item. Dan and Nicole are an item. The encyclopedias are still missing and she is now on retainer to Alejandro. The movement vamps and the unaffiliated are still at war with eachother and demon/vamp relations are still ambiguous. In this book we have a demon, Trevor, turn up from L.A. claiming he is the keeper of the books and heard them "awaken" when Val delivered them to Micah. Everyone but Val seems to find him charming, she just can't seem to trust him. He just seems a little off to her. Shade is paired up with Trevor to help him find the books. In the mean time Val is also searching herself. She has to take a break from The SCU due to working for Alejandro and uses that time to look. While all of this is going on Val also has to battle her hormones. She is wanting increasingly more and more to get it on with Shade. But, if she does she'll lose her strength, speed and ability to heal faster then normal. Poor thing, I'd be all over Shade, LOL. I liked this one the best of the three. They just seem to get better as the story progresses. So I also gave this one four stars

I really enjoyed the second and third of this series and plan on getting the 4th soon! I would say go ahead and borrow these and if you like them buy them. They are a good read and Val seems to be coming into her own, Shade is smexy, and Fang is just plain hilarious. He's such a smart ass!

Sometimes you ask for something...and the author actually grants your wish! After reading Bite Me recently, I noted that the series would be a lot more fun if Val, who is a vampire-slaying part-succubus, actually got a decent boyfriend. I'm happy to say that in the second and third installments in the series, Val breaks up with the honorable but boring Dan and hooks up with someone much more interesting.

And that someone is Shade, a fascinating shadow demon who has transparent skin that shows the powerful energy swirling around inside him. Shade's skin only appears normal when he's grounded by touching someone else, and paired with the ability to absorb and reshape energy, this character pretty spectacular. Val is partnered with Shade to help figure out who's betraying the Demon Underground and to recover the missing Encylopedia Magicka, and later finds that he's very helpful in channeling Lola, her inner lust demon. Unfortunately, just as Val starts getting closer to her boyfriend, she's faced with a difficult choice: is love worth giving up your identity for?

As in the first installment, Val's sidekick demon hellhound Fang is still snarky and hilarious and sweet, and now has a lady companion of his own who wreaks havoc in her own inimitable way. The struggles and power plays between the demons and the vamps has been ratcheted up, with tensions mounting as both sides try to maintain a temporary truce while fighting the unrest and deception within their own factions. Val really comes into her own in these books as a strong female character who's not only a butt-kicking action hero, but who also consistently tries to do the right thing. It's also great to see a hot but mutually respectful relationship; Shade doesn't hesitate to disagree with Val when he thinks she's wrong, but their arguments don't turn nasty and controlling like they do in so many other books.

The author has already announced that she's working on Make Me, the fourth book in this series, which will be out in 2012. Fans of the Chicagoland Vampires or Vampire Academy (and kick-ass heroines in general) will definitely love this series.

QUICK THOUGHTS:
Val isn’t your normal 18 year old girl, she’s half demon and a lust one at that. She is also known as the Slayer in the vampire world, she has fought and taken down many evil vampires. This time around she is looking for a missing book, trying to figure out her new relationship with her shadow demon boyfriend Shade, dealing with an annoying unknown Demon who she doesn’t trust, and keeping her lust demon side satisfied. All in a days work for an 18-year-old girl whose best friend is a hellhound.

REVIEW:
Val has a lot to deal with this time around; after an accident causes some good vampires to be threatened she agrees to work with their leader Alejandro. He wants Val to help support the movement for vampire to reveal themselves to the humans, also wanting the demons to come out with them as well. But the alliance with the good vampires and demons has another issue to deal with, a magical book has gone missing and is hiding somewhere in the city. The must find it before it gets into the wrong hands, so Val is asked to get the job done.
A lot of new and interesting characters are introduced, plus we get to see Dan Sullivan again even though Val and him are not partners anymore. I was a bit surprised on where their relationship ended but I really like Shade and how much he cares for her. He became an important character this time around, as a Shadow Demon, Shade can heal people and is needed a lot to save people and even heal Val a couple times. But there is a bad thing that happens when Shade heals, so it adds a whole another side of tension and drama for Val.
I really felt for Val in this book a lot more because she was frustrated through out most of the book and so was I. But in a good way, a new character is introduced and you don’t like him and neither does Val. It really shows how good a writer Parker Blue is when you feel the same emotions along side her main character. I was excited to discover what happened to this missing book and how this new character was connected to it.
There a lot of loving, action and I mean really great fight scene and use of demon power, emotion drama, and humorous scenes with the two Hellhounds. You got to love having a best friend who is a hellhound and can hear your thought as well as other around you; Fang really give the tone of the book another boost of fun.
I can’t wait for the fourth book! The ending has me begging for the next to come out asap!
RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult novel, suiting for any age. It has some violence, but none that would be too scary for any reader. I would recommend to fans that like Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, or PC Cast…

Fang Me by Parker Blue.
This was a really good read.
My name is Val Shapiro and I am a succubas lust demon. I have a telepathic canine friend called fang. He's part hellhound part scruffy terrior. I am trying to find the encyclopedia magicka as someone has stolen them from me. If someone gets hold of them it could make them something stupid. I have to find them first. Although a little slow in places I read it. 4*. Thanks to bell bridge books and netgalley.

Book Info: Genre: YA Fantasy/Vampires, Demons Reading Level: YA

Disclosure: I received a special 3-in-1 eGalley review copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: The vampires want it. Val has a personal claim to the Encyclopedia--her demon father left it to her when he died--but someone stole it recently. And that can't be good. Battling vamps and dodging demons, Val struggles to unravel the mystery and find the thief. At the same time, she's fighting her attraction to sweet, sexy Shade--her favorite shadow demon.

My Thoughts: Totally awesome, and now I definitely want to read the next book! I love the continuing growth that Val is going through, and while not all the changes are necessarily good ones (or at least, not necessarily to her benefit), they are all a necessary part of her growing up and growing into the person she needs to be become. Also, I’m seriously hoping for hellhound puppies in Make Me.

Trevor was quite a character. At the denouement, I made a big, loud “ah haa ha HAH,” which annoyed my husband, who was trying to get to sleep. Well, as I assured him, it was a moment that was very much worth that exclamation. I loved the addition of the Wiccan women into the group, and hope we’ll see more of them in the next book as well (and I know they’re hoping for hellhound puppies as well).

A really great book in a really fun series - I love the mixture of light-heartedness and action, reality and grit all mixed up together. Highly recommended!

Summary of the story of the Demon Underground thus far;

My name is Val (Valentine) Shapiro, and I‘m a succubus lust demon. Well, partially anyway. I‘m only one-eighth demon, but that‘s the part that dominates my life. It‘s a bitch to keep the lust under control. I almost drained a guy dry of his sexual energy when I was sixteen, but I do a good job of keeping it in check by channeling the lust and the extra strength and speed that comes with it into slaying vampires on the dark streets of San Antonio. Hence my nickname, the Slayer.

My dumb younger half-sister, Jen, wants to be just like me, even though she‘s totally normal. If you can call a perky blonde cheerleader type normal. Anyway, when Jen sneaked out to join me on one of my hunts, my mom and step-father panicked and figured I was a bad influence on her, so they fired me from their New Age bookstore and kicked me out of the house—on my eighteenth birthday no less. Happy 18th birthday to me.

It turned out okay, though, because I gained an awesome new telepathic canine friend, Fang, who is part hellhound, part scruffy terrier, and all snark. He was sent to me by Micah Blackburn, leader of the Demon Underground. I hadn‘t even known it existed until then, probably because their main goal in life is to keep themselves hidden and help each other find jobs and live ordinary lives where so-called ―normals won‘t freak out at the sight of them or what they can do.

Oh, yeah, I also lucked out and found a job with the city‘s Special Crimes Unit, so I actually got paid to kill vampires. When they paired me up with mortal Dan Sullivan to shut down a vein of bloodsuckers who were terrorizing the city, we learned they were actually an organization of good vamps called the New Blood Movement who set up blood banks so they could snack on stupid volunteers. I thought Dan and I had kind of a romantic thing going, but when I lopped off the head of the real bloodsucker responsible for the vampire problem, Dan‘s ex-fiancée Lily Armstrong, it kinda ruined that. Not to mention that he was totally weirded out when the succubus inside me—I call her Lola—tried to sink her hooks into him and slurp up all his yummy goodness.

So, he dumped me and found someone human to snog with Nicole Jones. No biggie. I got over him when I got to know Shade. Part shadow demon, he has interdimensional energies whirling through his body. All you can see of him is that swirl, unless he‘s touching someone else to ground himself in this reality. Then he‘s totally hot. And he touches me a lot. Just to help me keep Lola under control, you understand. Not that it‘s a hardship. Did I mention he‘s totally hot?

Anyway, someone stole the Encyclopedia Magicka that my demon father had given me, and used it to poison the blood banks and turn the vamps insane. Not that I was totally opposed to that, but it meant they were hurting innocents, so I helped the vamps catch the phase demon, Josh, who‘d poisoned them, and Andrew, the fire demon who tried to burn down their home.

Turns out the books have some kind of dark magick inside them that make the demons go nutso. But to make it up to the Movement, I agreed to take some time off from the force and help them find the books before the dark magicks make someone else do something stupid.

How? I have no clue.

**Review** Fang me is the third book in the Demon Underground series featuring, of course, Val Shapiro as a part demon (succubus) vampire slayer. As this story begins, she has worked out a contract to work for Alejandro until the Encyclopedia Magicka books are found. She gets to work 5 days a week, from midnight to dawn while she searches San Antonio for the books. She also is obligated to use her powers to help Alejandro maintain order among his vampires. In doing so, she has taken a leave from the Special Crimes Unit.

Val and Shade have become a couple since the last time we checked in on them. Val keeps the shadow demon within Shade grounded in this reality so he didn‘t let the big bad demons through into our world, and he feeds the lust demon within Val who she calls Lola. The problem with their relationship is this; if Val and Shade have sex, and she loses her virginity….say goodbye to her enhanced senses, fast reflexes, and rapid healing along with the ability to be an effective Slayer.

The book Val is looking for, Encyclopedia Magicka was created a very long time ago by a group of demons who wanted their part-human descendants to understand their heritage. If Val thought this was going to be easy peasy, a surprise arrives at Aleyandro’s door in the form of Trevor Jackson.

Trevor Jackson claims that he is from the Demon Underground of Los Angeles, and also claims to be the keeper of the Encyclopedia Magicka and wants it back. Val had the books for thirteen years, and nothing bad happened to her, or to Micah’s father, so she is correct in presuming that Trevor is full of himself and not to be trusted. Too bad others don't feel that way. Trevor has a deep dark secret he is hiding away, and it doesn’t come to revelation until later in the book.

Along the way of looking for the book, voices are talking to Val’s subconscious mind telling her to “Help me. Find me.” Could the book be a sort of Book of Shadows? As she gets closer to finding the book, a new prophecy is forespoken. “Seek not, lest you find more than you bargained for. Keep not, lest you are prepared to meet your destiny.”

To Val, who doesn’t trust Trevor, this can mean only one thing; find the books before Trevor Jackson does or the world as we know it will change drastically.

A whole new cast of characters is introduced, including the actual Keeper of the book who has been trapped for 90 years, as well as several others who didn't realize that they were part demons. Val is still a serious character that you can fall behind, but her choices she makes in this book, aren’t well thought out. She continually puts herself in danger, which I guess if she's the slayer and all, makes sense but her choice with Shade (NOT SPOILING!) was one that probably means a new direction for this series.

Yes, Val still has strength of conviction, purpose, and character, but she doesn't get the point that she needs help from others around her to help save her when she gets drained, or puts out too much power. Former partner Dan Sullivan, is nearly nonexistent in this release. He has hooked up with Nicole Jones, while Val has taken a leave of absence from the SCU. His participation, however, does lead to Val's finding the books and the final climax of the story.

The end of this book was absolutely correct in it's conclusion. The choices that were made by Val, had no other alternate route to follow. Thank you No! there are no cliff hangers in this book, which I really enjoyed! And, we get to look forward to another release in the series!

Make Me will be Book 4 in the series and will release Spring of 2012, per Parker Blue’s Facebook page.

Read This Review & More Like It On My Blog!

Unlike book #2 which launched a completely new, different story from the first book, Fang Me continues with the same events of Try Me. Now established in roles and relationships, the characters of the Demon Underground novels have a continuing mystery to solve, in addition to a new unknown, unaffiliated demon in San Antonio. Pretty much on par stylistically with the first two, Fang Me continues Parker Blue's three-book-long streak of fun, easy and amusing vampire novels with a likeable, kickass heroine. Not content with the plethora of demons, magic and abilities shown before, Ms. Blue has more creativity to throw at her readers in this action-packed, fast-paced snarky adventure. Armed with a sword, a motorcycle, some vampire stakes and her trusty hellhound/terrier Fang, Val Shapiro is a character that I like more and more with each novel she stars within.

Val herself remains one of my favorite characters of the series - a situation I don't usually have with teenage young-adult (typically female) protagonists. She doesn't fall prey to the "poor poor pitiful me" routine so many "heroines" epouse, but (finally) nor does she believe only she can do everything. Val's relationship with Shade (more on him later) is another boon for the Slayer: both part-demons need the other to keep them "human" (Val in control of Lola and Shade grounded in this reality) without veering into codependency. They're good to each other, good for each other without being cloying or changing Val's harder edges. I did find the whole "lust demon loses virginity thus loses powers" to be a rather arbitrary "law" and also just kind of dumb: wouldn't a lust demon be fueled by sex, rather than depleted/lose powers and abilities by the act? It seems like - and comes across - as an obvious plot point thrown in just to cause a wrench between Shade and Val - and also to keep Val unsure of what she really wants. It's a very unfair situation for the teenager: the normal life she said she wanted, or the interesting, action-packed life she has lead so far.

Shade. Ahhh, Shade. One of the most likeable characters from all three of the novels, Shade is rapidly becoming one of my favorites for the series. Besides his innate kindness and goodness he displays towards Val, he comes across as the only genuinely nice guy Val knows, outside of Micah. Juxtaposing Shade's accepting attitude with Dan's complete and total rejection of Val and her demon, Shade urges Val to recognize that "Lola" is just another facet of herself, and not a reason to be ashamed. A healthy teen relationship, with the guy clearly intent on doing what's right? Wowza - another reason I enjoy these novels like I do. I do think that Shade and Val's relationship got a little too intense way too fast: saying "I love you" before dating even a full month tends to make me disbelieve/judge a little bit. For Val, someone who felt rejected and ashamed all her life, to go from "I'm not good enough for a guy" to "I love you" in a matter of weeks does not feel in line with her character.

The other elements of the novel (the mystery of who Trevor Jackson is, what happened to the Encyclopedia Magicka, Dan/Nic, etc.) were mostly decently done. I wished for more feel of tension/atmosphere for this third one: it was surprisingly lacking in departments its predecessors each have had in abundance. Val is still caught between two powerful groups (the vampires and the demons) but the tone is much more relaxed than when she was in the same situation during Try Me. I will also say I continually find the mystery elements of these novels to be way underdone, and underplayed. There is never a build-up of tension before a big reveal and I feel somewhat let down by this ending in particular. Trevor seemed a bit obvious and not very subtle when he arrived (and how he acted around Shade had my sketch-o-meter going off the charts all the time) but I liked the additional knowledge he provided. I only have one other nitpick: I really, really hate it when authors add a 'k' to the end of the word "magic" in an attempt to make individualistic/unique/whatever. It doesn't work - all it does is annoy me!

However, Parker Blue is definitely not an author content to sit back, lazy, and using what she has created so far; each new novel has something unique and creative inside, new revelations about Val or her world of San Antonio. More details about the still-largely-mysterious Demon Underground emerge as well, and lend hope for a further novel in this series. Fun, not perfect but definitely worth a read if you're in the mood for Texan teenager with attitude, stakes, a hot shadow demon boyfriend and a lot of snark.

Im torn between a five and a four, but i'll just go with four since there IS some flaws in the book that i've picked up while reading but i just cant remember it now.

Val needs to find the Encyclopedia Magicka 1)to save the book from landing into the wrong hands=world destruction or sth, 2)to end the contract that she made with Alejandro, the head of the good vamps. But along the way, some half-demon who's mind Fang cant read(the only one who Fang cant read)comes along and announces that he is the keeper of the books. Everyone bought his story except for Val, who has the instincts of a true predator(or Slayer in this case). Anyway, no one believes her and she's all alone in her beliefs and yadda yadda, but she found the books in the end.

That is kinda the main plot of the story, but along the way, some things(some good some bad)happens which leaves me in a total tangled mess of emotions so this may not be a good review, cause i've just finished reading the book and i dont want to procrastinate writing this review to keep the feelings fresh.

Firstly, *BIG SPOILER,i am not joking. It is BIG*

Secondly, i dont know why, but im am so hooked to this book. I mean it is not like a WOW, THIS IS FANTASTICLE! kind of book. I dont know..the plot was reasonable, the characters were cute and witty and snarky...hey, maybe that's why i liked it so much. The humor? Yeah that and the fact that im drawn to strong and independent heroines. Val, is awesome. Fang, is absolutely sarcastic and adorable. Shade, is normal(ok im not giving him enough credit but juxtaposing him beside his girlfriend?...nehhhhh he's..slightly above average:)).

The bad guy was kinda cliche at the end, but i think the plot was well written(again) that i still had the satisfying shock when everything was out in the open. And i can tell Blue did her research homework well on the many types of demons there are and she does try to explain quite clearly what each of them do and all.

At some points in the book, i thought that Blue was making things go along a little too conveniently and so tried to add in some obstacles into the characters' lives(the spoiler thing for one)to make it more exciting, but...I just think that she should spend more time to work those out, make it more convincing rather than just throw some crap in to complicate stuff.

Her characters, especially the protagonists and main people Val, Fang, Shade, and maybe Trevor, were all well developed(from my unprofessional POV at least). I got to know Val(duh) and Fang pretty well after the first book, and im still liking them more and more in this one.

The ending was cool, not impressive, but it was good. I liked the story ALOT(i really have no idea why, but i do..ALOT)and i think it is definitely worth a shot(tho if you dont like simple reads then i think you should probably avoid it).

PS. The book should be longer!!Loooooonger!!198 pages is TOO SHORT!!

PSS.(this is a ranting session here)There was this short excerpt on the next book after the author's note, DO NOT READ IT if you are susceptible to heart pains or if you have a weak heart. That cliffhanger is seriously starting to wreak havoc on my emotions, and im feeling really desperate to get my hands on the next book now. And you dont want to know how desperate. Trust me, you dont. NOOOO..how can Blue do this to us...TT..This is torture i tell you. TORTURE!!

PSSS. I'll add more stuff when i remember them into the review because im seriously suffering from some sever memory loss and heart aches now. sigh.. Good day and thanks for reading:)

I received this series as a three book package deal from Netgalley, so I'm going to review it as such. Surprisingly, I had never heard of this series but I was drawn to it because it is about vampires and I rarely turn down a book that is about vampires or werewolves. I am so glad that I requested this as I absolutely loved it. It's not just about vampires, but demons too. One of those demons is our fabulous protag, Val Shapiro, otherwise known as The Slayer, who is 1/8 succubus.

At the start, we meet Val, out doing her thing and hunting vampires. We learn exactly what she can do, or as much as she knows she can do at this time, straight away. Unfortunately, her mother and stepfather have never been happy with what she is and feel she is a bad influence on her younger sister, and on Val's 18th birthday, they tell her to leave their house, and her job at their bookstore.

Val manages to get a job working with the San Antonio PD, Special Crimes Unit, thanks to Dan, who becomes her partner. He also finds her a place to live as his sister, Gwen, is looking for a room mate. All very convenient I know, but it works. And these books kept me so entertained that I could overlook small things like this.

She also finds a dog, who happens to be part hellhound. He can hear her thoughts and talk to her in her head. He tells her his name is Fang and they are soon best friends with him being a valuable asset to her on the hunt.

There are many different types of demon in this book. Shade, a shadow demon, Tessa is a soothsayer, who predicts the future, a fire demon, a water demon and so many more.

The vampires, Alejandro and his vein of vampires are trying to start up the New Blood Movement. An organisation that will run bloodbanks where humans can go to donate blood. They do not want to drink from humans without their consent. All vampires are being encouraged to join this movement, and if they don't and continue to kill humans, the penalty will be death.

This is an amazing series. I can't believe it isn't more popular and that I haven't heard of it before. I was just reeled in and I couldn't put these out of my hands. I found them to be extremely imaginative and unpredictable. Some aspects change completely from one book to the next. Like the love interest. But there's not triangle which I am happy about. And there's the interesting consequence of what will happen to Val when she loses her virginity.

This book kind of sits on the line between YA and adult. Val is 18 but everyone around her are adults. As Val is a succubus, these books do have their fair share of sexual references and so I would think are definitely more suited to the older end of the YA spectre.

Val herself, I love her. She is a fantastic character. She is tough and brave and can be a smart mouth but when she tries to come back after a snide comment directed at her she finds herself at a loss of a good comeback. She will help anyone who she feels to be decent and will not kill indiscriminately. This is how she comes to find herself working for the vampires in the New Blood Movement. She is definitely on my list of favourite female protags.

These books do have romance running through them but it is far from the main event of the story. These are extremely fast paced with lots of action. The characters are all well written, there is a lot of them, and I enjoyed them all.

I cannot recommend these books enough. I am delighted to have the 4th book in the series, Make Me to hand and I cant wait to start it. I was ecstatically happy to discover that Parker has been contracted for two more books in this series and a short story. I don't want this series to end.

I loved it, I really did! This series really is a hidden gem. Taking aside a few spelling and grammar mistakes, this book series is really fantastic. I can understand why people may overlook it and make assumptions before they read it, unfortunately I admit I’m guilty of that myself--I assumed that it’d be another badly written, stupid story lined book with boring, plastic characters that you sometimes find with not very well know books, and yet it’s not.
This whole series is fun and snarky, filled with action and attitude, featuring an awesome, kick-ass heroine.

This book was as good as the previous too, with Val being her usually tough, bring-it-on self. I really love her as a character. She’s tough, but not too tough, with enough vulnerability that you’re able to emphasise with her without having her being a wuss or too soft. One of the things I love about her is that she’s so realistic. She reacts just like I expect a teenage girl to, and she acts exactly like one as well. She’s experiencing first love and her changing emotions and hormones and she’s acting just like a regular teenage girl would, unlike some heroine you see nowadays where they react in a completely unrealistic manner.
I’m still in love with Fang. How can you not be? He’s an adorable, sarcastic talking hellhound who acts like Val’s pet one moment and her best friend slash big brother the next. He’s such a sweetie and I love having him in the series. He makes each and every book for me!

I like seeing Val with Shade, although I still don’t know how I feel about them together. I really do like Shade--he’s such a great guy and he’s been so good to Val, but I just can’t help but miss Dan. I really felt that the two of them had something in the beginning of this series, and yet with each book it has disappeared a little bit more and considering that Val and Shade are well and truly a couple, having slept tother, and Val admitting that she doesn’t really feel anything for Dan anymore, I just can’t help but be sad over that. Val and Shade have something good and they both seem to love each other, but for some reason, I don’t get that joy and giddiness over reading about the two of them together like I did when Val was with Dan.
Perhaps it’s just me--maybe I’m weird, but even though I’m happy to see them together, I’m still holding out a tiny hope that Dan ditches Nichole, Val and Shade split up some way (I know, I know, I’m so mean) and then Val and Dan run away together.

I really enjoyed the storyline in this book, although I knew from the beginning there was something off with Trevor. I never trusted him--he seemed too good, too perfect....there was defiantly something up with that. So it’s surface to say that I wasn’t surprised to discover he was the bad guy, but I was a little bit surprised to learn that Val is the new keeper. I had a feeling something like that might, might happen, especially when Val slept with Shade and lost her abilities, but I wasn’t expecting it so soon. I thought maybe at the end of the series. It’s going to be interesting to see how Val acts now as the Keeper in the next book.

I can't wait for Make Me, the 4th book set for release sometime in 2012.....

Oh Demon Underground. One point five steps forward in storytelling, and at least ten more in the case for homophobia. I don't even know what to call that. I mean, barring the obvious, it's not like things got worse in this last installment than they were in any others, and it was better in some - well, one aspect. Still, any good in this book is nowhere near enough to make up for the pivotal bad, and the blandness of the series as a whole.

Yeah, we're going to go with bullets again, because there's not much to say and I'm saving the effort of writing transitions for more interesting books. So here we go!

Cool:

- The payoff - the books so far have all been pretty run-of-the-mill in subject matter, and plot resolutions have been lackluster at best. A standoff here, a fist fight there, both easily solved by Val's super-succubus powers. While both of those things did happen in this book, the actual boss fight in Fang Me was pretty cool. It's appropriately mystical and exotic and action-packed, what with Shade transporting in super-powerful mage demons from another dimension under duress, and Val using her succubus magic in a whole new way to fight them back. That final fight included more creative and interesting elements than the last three books put together (+1 step), and I still say that Shade and all of the alternate dimension shit is the best part of this series.

-Val's badassedness - I suppose I've been so busy bitching about other things in the last three reviews that I haven't really given Val much credit for being a pretty active heroine. As annoying as she often is, Val doesn't let anyone boss her around or control where she goes and what she does, and out-powered or not, she is always involved in the action. That may seem like a weird thing to praise, but really, a heroine's activeness in the conflicts can be hit or miss, even in "badass something-hunter" books, and I'm one of those people who wants the protagonist swinging fists in the fray, whether they should be there or not *glares at Mercy Thompson books*.

Not Cool

- The same shit I've been bitching about through the entire series - not even twenty pages in and Blue completely stops the action so that Val can spend an entire page recapping and explaining in detail every single pro and con related to the quandary having Virgin Powers put her in. As if we didn't remember/couldn't have figured out why not being able to have sex with your boyfriend without losing your superspecial abilities sucks on our own. Thanks again for the vote of confidence, Blue.

- The plot - while the payoff may have been interesting and fun to read about, the whole thing was fueled by a blatant MacGuffin. The search for the books was long and winding, and Blue had to go to such great lengths to get around her own road blocks that Val's investigation felt much longer and more pointless than it actually was. The true solution was so obvious that Blue spent half the book finding ways to stall its reveal, but once we got through with the set-up and close enough to the conclusion that these indicators could start popping up, the whole thing got painfully predictable...

Fang Me by Parker Blue
Demon Underground series book 3
Bell Bridge Books – March 14, 2011
www.parkerblue.net
Facebook: yes
Rating: Loved it!
Recommendations: YA, Paranormal, action that involves meeting your destiny

Val Shapiro is back, and this time she is not after vampires –she’s working for them. It’s not something she really wants to do, but she’s under contract until the Encyclopedia Magicka books are found and the Movement is able to come out publicly. But Val, the vampires and the Demon Underground are not the only ones who are looking for the books. A visitor, Trevor, from another state, claims that he is the keeper of the books. Val doesn’t trust him and does her best to give him the benefit of the doubt. She is now searching for the books, trying to figure out what it is that Trevor is hading, fighting the unaffiliated vampires while doing her best to not give in to her temptation with Shade.

This is the third book in the series and it is perhaps my favorite. For lots of reasons, there is a depth in this one that was not present in the first two novels. It feels like Parker Blue has settled into this series and has found that comfortable groove where the characters have come to life and the story is a movie playing until it is captured. That is apparent in this one. Don’t get me wrong; I loved the first two books a lot, but this is so much better because of that groove feeling.

In this story, Val realizes that she has a lot more to lose; the strength, speed and intuition needed to slay vampires or eventually losing Shade. Shade knows what’s at risk for her if they give in to their emotions and impulses and has assured her that he is not in the relationship for that. But like most girls her age she doesn’t believe him; doesn’t believe that any guy would be willing to have a long relationship without getting physical. This is what is at stake, she doesn’t think it’s fair but has decided to do the mature thing and make a choice instead of running from it. A decision that shows how much she has grown. But her search for the books requires her to put off the decision and presents Val with another opportunity; a new path that she can take. So in the face of losing something big, Val also has the chance to gain something equally big (if not bigger). It’s funny, action-packed, and full of the “Val-isms” readers have come to love and so much more.

Her story doesn’t end with this book. There is another book expected in the Demon Underground series, but I am secretly hoping that there are more in the works. There is so much potential and room for growth in this series or a spin-off. Either way I am looking forward to see what the future has in store for Val Shapiro and the other characters of the Demon Underground.

Terrific third book in a superb YA urban-fantasy series

Eighteen-year-old Val Shapiro is one-eighth succubus demon. She and her sidekick, Fang, a half-terrier, half-hellhound dog who can talk to her telepathically, are still searching frantically for the enormously powerful Encyclopedia Magicka. They must locate it before either of the warring factions of vampires and part-demon humans within the city of San Antonio get their hands on it. If Val and Fang fail, there will be dire consequences for millions. Val's vampire enemies, who call her The Slayer, continue to attempt to kill her, and she is unsure who to trust among her fellow part-demons, because anyone who obtains the Encyclopedia Magicka will gain unimaginable powers of destruction.

As Val fights evil vampires and sorts out friends from enemies among the demonic community, she continues to resist her attraction to adorable, hunky Shade, a boy who is part shadow demon and was her romantic interest in Try Me, book two of this series. Val is of age and willing to become Shade's lover, whom she has come to care for deeply, but there are two consequences of that choice that she fears: Will Lola, her succubus-demon side, harm Shade? And will losing her virginity cause Val to lose her demonic superpowers as well, leaving her wide open to destruction by the vampires seeking to destroy her?

This YA urban-fantasy series continues in its outstanding course of combining great paranormal world-building with strong, sympathetic good-guy characters, and scary, believable bad-guy characters. I love all the action, and I adore the comic relief provided by Fang, but my absolute favorite part of this book is the growing romance between Val and Shade. He is one of my favorite of YA romance heroes in recent years, and it is a privilege to continue to follow this compelling duo along their conflict-riddled road to love.

Parental guidance note: Because of the violence contained in this book and the sexualized nature of Val's succubus-demon side, many parents may find the content of this book too mature for younger teens.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 5
Subcharacters: 5
Fantasy World-Building: 5
Writing: 5
Action-Adventure Plot: 5
Romantic Subplot: 5+++
Overall: 5

By the way, I contacted Parker Blue through her website and asked her if there would be more books in this series. I am thrilled to report that she states she is more than willing to write as many books in this series as her publisher will print. This is exciting news for avid fans of her series such as myself!

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book in electronic form through NetGalley.

Fang Me is the third installment in the Demon Underground series and features our favorite 1/8th succubus demon, Val Shapiro. At this point, Val has really become a voice of reason trusted by both vampires and demons alike. She has friends in the demon community, including hot demon boyfriend Shade and her mentor/cousin Micah, plus she's become involved in the vampire movement and is temporarily working for their leader. She's also started to embrace her inner demon and realize that "Lola" isn't a separate entity that can be suppressed but is a part of her. She's come a long way from the first chapters of Bite Me.

I loved the story developments in this book. After learning in the last book that losing her virginity will come with a price, Val is finding it tough to be near Shade. I'm truthfully impressed that she's lasted as long as she has! Without spoiling anything, I'll say I was a bit disappointed with how this story arc played out. After the heat between Shade and Val in the second book I had hoped to see more in this one. It was there but not quite at the same level. I had to keep reminding myself that this is young adult and not paranormal romance so my expectations need to be adjusted. Plus, there's a bit of a strange explanation for how things play out the way they do that I didn't particularly enjoy. That being said, I still adore the two of them together trying to find their way but always having each other's back completely. I would never have predicted back in book one that Dan would be so out of the picture but Shade is so great that I'm loving it!

There's also some nice developments in this book with Val's family. Her mom is coming around and it's making things a bit easier for everyone. Plus, Val's supported by so many people, demons, vamps that it's really lovely to see. She's seeing that she's not alone and she can ask for help which is a revelation to her.

Really fantastic developments with the books that everyone's searching for. I knew Trevor was a snake since I trust Val's instincts completely. I absolutely knew he had no connection to the book and was putting on an act and was very relieved when Shade finally caught on. I didn't want Trevor to tear them apart. It made perfect sense that the books chose Val and now it brings the story in a different direction.

The teaser chapter for Make Me was fantastic and I'll be happy to keep reading the series and recommend it to anyone who'll listen.

Fang and Val have still yet to locate the Encyclopedia Magicka and all the demons and vampires are after Val to find it before she does or stop her indefinably from ever finding it. Val can't seem to trust anyone anymore even her own feelings and emotions for the sexy Shade who legend or rumor has it that if she succumbs to her desires and gives herself to Shade she could lose her demon half of her which sometimes doesn't seem to be such a bad idea not when she thinks she might be exactly falling in love. Val is determined to do whatever it takes to find the Encyclopedia Magicka and save her world from what could be a deadly disaster if it somehow finds its way into the wrong persons hands. But she can't do that without her demon-half but is Loa willing to wait, her desires can't be ignored for much longer.

Oh! Its that darling dog again.
The half Hellhound that never ceases to amaze me. (wistfulsigh) As Val, just about to cave in, sets out to retrieve her father gift the Encyclopedia Magicka they can't trust anyone to be one her side but Fang. Demons and vampires and spooks of the underground seem to be crawling out of the woodwork everywhere and the one thing they want is the one thing they'll do anything to get: The Encyclopedia Magicka. A race against time and the UnHoly issues and through teeth and fang Val fights through emotional waste left over from her home and emotional distress left over from a certain Angel-featured demon named Shade. Trying to deny her building inner-most desires towards the sexy man while also wildly more determined than ever to find the Encyclopedia Magicka. To add a healthy dose of pressure along with this messy situation, if Val does not find her father's gift than the end results could be deadly for all of humanity.

Okay, so as to be expected I was pleased with the end of these series, though vaguely disappointed. There seemed to be multiple climaxes and at times the hype was not worth the end results, compared to the other two satisfying novels I took five days to read this, only because I was bored by the middle and decided to start a whole different book altogether. However, this is to be expected when one reads all three installments back-to-back-to-back, you lose the intrigue and a generally appealing book becomes slightly boorish and steadfast. Despite this being said, I would recommend reading this series, just not so cramped together perhaps.

In Book III of the Demon Underground series, readers will once again be swept away into the world of vampires (good and bad, of course). They will once again follow the Slayer who is half human (with a little bit of succubus added in for good measure), who is doing her job and trying to ferret out evil.

Valentine Shapiro is the Slayer. A long time ago she realized that there was yet another person inside of her that she has dubbed, Lola. Lola has an immense sexual appetite and has the ability to “suck” others dry; hence, why Val takes out most of her aggressions on the streets slaying vampires in order to keep Lola in check. Of course, Val isn’t alone. Her partner in everything she does is a dog named Fang, who ‘speaks’ to Val as they work together to solve various crimes. (Fang is adorable - a hellhound mixed with a scruffy terrier that can actually sound as intelligent as Freud.)

Anyway, Val’s partner who she worked with in the City Special Crimes Unit is no longer her partner. His name is Dan Sullivan, and although he once liked Val, watching her rip the head off his ex-fiancée just because she was an evil vampire, definitely put a “chink” in their working - and all other - relationships.

This time around Val has taken a leave of absence from the Special Crimes Unit, because she must work WITH the vampires in order to find an ancient book called the Encyclopedia of Magicka which has been proven to make even the best vampire go bad. Val has to get her hands on this book before even more bad things start to happen. Joining the team of the “New Blood Movement,” which is run by the head “good” vampire named Alejandro, Val has to find a way to figure out who is telling the truth, and whether or not the appearance of a new player by the name of Trevor is a sign of help or destruction. Add in a hot demon boyfriend named Shade, and a voice that screams out, “Help Me,” and readers will find themselves drawn into a story that is both exciting and hilarious.

Parker Blue has offered two Demon Underground books before this one titled Bite Me and Try Me, and she hasn’t lost her edge one single bit. The characters are still entertaining and the plot moves along quickly, offering the reader a really fun thrill ride.

If you didn’t begin with the first book in this series, go back and start. Valentine Shapiro, her dog named Fang, and HER world of vampires is absolutely captivating.

I received an ebook review copy with Bite Me, Try Me and Fang Me from netgalley.

Favorite Lines: ” It was really nice to have an excuse to hold onto Shade, especially with Lola out of commission. Made me feel like a normal girl on a date with her boyfriend. Even Fang was quiet for a change. Closing my eyes, I enjoyed the sensation of being warmed against Shade’s body, feeling safe and cared for.” (p. 534)

Val made an agreement in Try Me and it’s time for her to pay up. To do so she must interact with the vampire community on a larger scale than normal in the third installment in the Demons Underground series, Fang Me. It’s also a book that seems to span the distance between young adult and adult genres.

I have always loved the sexual undertones of the series. That Val doesn’t even realize how much enjoyment the men around her feel when she lets Lola (her inner succubus) free has always appealed to me. Sure the men don’t like losing control of themselves, but their little heads get quite the blast of pleasure and Val always seems to overlook it out of either fear of losing control or embarrassment. Something changes in this book and it puts a new light on everything. I’m even hoping that a few of the vampires get more “hands on” (wink wink) as the series progresses.

Like the previous book Try Me, Fang Me has some extremely predictable plot lines which never really bothered me as much as the secondary characters not seeing what was happening. The pleasure found in reading this series revolves around watching it the characters react to the different issues and seeing which path the author is going to lead the characters.

Pass it on or throw it away? Pass it on, of course. It’s a keeper and pivotal book in the series. Go out and buy this book along with the first two. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. This book is a series changer. Something big happens which shifts the course of it all. The excerpt for book four is OMG wonderful. Holy crap! I can’t believe how long I have to wait to read the next installment in this series. Book four, Make Me will be released in the spring of 2012.

Fang Me by Parker Blue is the third book in the Demon Underground series. Val Shapiro is the “The Slayer,” who is on a new mission, to find the Encyclopedia Magicka, before they fall into the wrong hands. Her biggest challenge, besides finding Encyclopedia Magicka, is trying to keep her feelings for Shade under control. This is not easy, being part succubus demon. A succubus feeds on sexual energy, and has the power to enthrall men. The problem is if Val is not careful, her succubus may kill anyone enthralled, by draining too much energy. If Val gives into her feelings for Shade, she could lose all her powers that allow her to protect herself.

I really love the first two books in the Demon Underground series, and I was excited to start Fang Me. I wanted to see how the relationship between Shade and Val developed, but mostly I wanted to see Val kick some more butt. I like the Val’s relationship with Shade, and want to see how it continues in the next installment. My favorite character has to be Fang. He is just hilarious, and his sarcastic attitude is a great mood breaker. I like how Fang calls Val on her B.S. and does not blink an eye.

Fang Me is centered on Val working to find the Encyclopedia Magicka. In the last books, the volumes of the Encyclopedia Magicka were hidden, and lost. Until Val finds them, she has to work for Alejandro, the leader of the New Blood Movement. The New Blood Movement is a group of vampires who want to come out public, and announce the presence of Vampires to the world. It is Val’s job to keep the vampires not part of the Movement under control, while protecting the investments of the Movement. As you can imagine, “The Slayer” does not really feel comfortable with this new job position.

If you have read and liked the other books in the series, Fang Me is a definite read. I really think any Buffy fans would also enjoy this type of book. I really enjoyed this book, and I cannot wait until the fourth book in the Demon Underground series is released.

Wow I didn’t sleep at all last night. I stayed up reading Fang Me. There is so much going on in this book you will not be disappointed. A new character is introduced in this book and he’s a sketchy character but so interesting. Parker does a great job with making you very curious about him and his motives and what he is. I spent half the time reading looking for clues about whether he was good or bad.

The action is constant in this book. There is one conflict after another as everyone rushes to find the books that were lost. I think if you are a fan of Chloe Neill’s Chicagoland Vampires (this is definitely more YA geared than hers) then you would really like this book. There is a lot of fights and some writing to keep you interested in between.

I love Shade and Val. They are likely one of my favorite couples. I like that they work for each other. Val is a really strong female but she still needs someone that will challenge her. At first I was afraid Shade wasn’t going to be up to the task but he really grows a lot in this book and looses some of that innocent exterior. I also think Val grew and learned a lot about herself in the process. They both make some life altering decisions (won’t disclose what) and I am excited to see what the future holds for them in the next installment due out Spring 2012.

I am so glad that this book did not end on a massive cliffhanger. I am getting tired of waiting for a year on a new book in a series with a major cliffhanger. The conflict is not totally resolved so it left room for the next book, however, it isn’t a crazy cliffhanger that will make you go crazy.

On a side note: I am really interested in Micah. I would love to see something with his back story or even a side storyline with him. I am really interested in the male point of view of a lust demon.

This is an incredible book I give it a very high recommendation!

Whereas Bite Me and Try Me were fun and wonderfully tongue-in-cheek, Fang Me takes a turn for the serious as Val now has to determine on which path her future lies. Is her whole identity wrapped up in the idea of her as a slayer, with supernatural strength, speed and healing abilities or is it as a part-lust demon? For Val, she has to make the choice, and this crossroads takes some of the fun out of the story.

To me, the fun is the story. When Fang and Val are bantering back and forth, these are some of the best moments of the novels. I wasn't looking for a "loss of virginity comes with serious, life-altering consequences" storyline, as I can get that in almost any other paranormal romance story, both on and off television. To me, Fang Me commits the action about which I warned readers in my review of Try Me; it takes itself too seriously. The consequence of this is that spark that made the first two so enjoyable and light-hearted is now gone.

This underlying seriousness is felt in all aspects of the novel, from Fang's interactions with Val, to her interactions with Dan and Shade, and even her relationships with the vampire and demon factions. The entire novel suffers as a result. Rather than rapidly reading because I want to devour the novel, as I did with the first two, I ended up rapidly skimming just so I could get to the end of the story. I was even disheartened to discover that Ms. Blue is working on a fourth Demon Underground novel. This is not the end result one wants to experience when reading, and it is doubly unfortunate because the first two novels were so fun.

Unfortunately, I do feel that Val's story has run its course. No amount of snark can help overcome a story that takes itself too seriously when it is not meant to be so. Once it started dealing with the issue of fate and destiny, Fang Me became too earnest and did not continue its inherent playfulness which made the first two stories so enjoyable.

Val Shapiro slakes the succubus part of her person by stabbing vampires – making the world safe for humans. Learning to live with her inner demon has isolated Val from the rest of the world, so she is scared and excited to find out that she isn’t the only one. Val and other members of the Demon Underground navigate a world in which demons just want to blend in; Vampires want to “come out;” and part demon dogs can talk to other demons telepathically.

Val’s character grows and changes through the series, even thought the series only spans a few months in “actual time.” I do wish we knew more about Shade, so I’m ready for Val to move beyond her own little self-absorbed world, she is only 18, but I’d think someone who kills vampires as a hobby/job would be a bit more mature.

I’ve enjoyed this series so far and was anxious to read the third installment. This galley has formatting issues that need to be cleaned up before mass release: quotation marks are shown as – and ||. Paragraphs don’t start and end properly. It’s odd to read that way, but at least it’s consistent. I had read Bite Me and Try Me before – free on my Kindle, no formatting issues on those versions.
Bite Me sets up Val as a vampire slayer in Texas – a place where vampires have decided to set up blood banks to get “volunteer” donors so they can come out and live as legal citizens. The idea that all vampires are not evil is a new one to Val and the SCU- Special (Supernatural) Crimes Unit for those of us who read a lot of paranormal fiction- not so much. Try Me follows immediately on the heels of Bite Me taking place within a few days of Bite Me’s ending. Val and Shade’s relationship grows and becomes complicated by revelations concerning demon nature. Fang Me solves the mystery of the missing books in a fairly satisfying way. I look forward to the 4th installment of this series. I’m ready to find out what Val plans to do with her life.

After the little slump in book two, I liked this one better again. The story, the new characters, how everything developed. The dynamics was just pulling you better into the story once more. Shade just got cuter and cuter, everytime he had an appearance. ^.^ Fang was his ususal snarky self, Alejandro was a mystery as always, Micah was still there when you needed him. And - just like Val - I disliked the new guy, Trevor, on the spot. He was the type of cocky that has nothing sexy or funny to it, only goes on your nerves like crazy. All through the book, all his actions were just... suspiciously wrong. And thank God Val wasn't off one bit about him, that lying, thiefing jerk. Val's instincts are just so awesome! Although the hunt for the Encyclopedia in itself wasn't that fascinating, there were alot of events along the way, and at the end, that make this story worthwhile.

But I can't quite imagine what Val's going to do without her powers... yep, imagine that! Shade and her are going to get down to it eventually, it's just a matter of time and circumstances. And then what? Is the Encyclopedia going to protect her? I mean, it's going to give her new kinds of powers since she's the legal Keeper, I'm sure of it, but is it going to be the same? I doubt that. It'll probably take them all some time to get used to all the changes around them. So curious to read about that in the sequel Make Me! Plus, I wanna know how Dan is going to respond to Val's now finalized relationship with Shade. I still haven't written him off. And how those two are going to develop, I wonder. Aaaand that weird prophecy Alejandro about a heart aka Valentine was talking about, since we haven't gotten to any of that yet. There's so much to look forward to!

I received this book as a courtesy from netgalley.com; however, my review is unbiased and based upon my true feelings about the book.

"Fang Me" is another exceptional read in the Demon Underground series. In this installment Val is now under contract to work for Alejandro, vampire and leader of the New Blood movement. In addition, she is struggling with her succubus side, Lola. She has discovered that if she loses her virginity, she will also lose her strength, speed and other slayer abilities. This truly is complicated by her ever increasing lust for her boyfriend, Shade.

Val also discovers that Shade has secrets of his own. When he heals others there is a grave price to pay that just might allow evil demons to enter our world and create havoc. Not to mention that Val must locate the magick encyclopedia so she can be released from her contract with Alejandro and before other interested parties get their hands on it. This situation is further complicated when a charismatic demon, Trevor comes to town claiming to be the Keeper of the book. Val does not trust him and he charms her friends into believing she is just jealous. Is he what he seems or is evil afoot?

This series just keeps getting better and better. I truly despised Trevor and wanted to take him down. However, I was happy to see Val handle him with her own brand of justice. It was also nice to see a cameo appearance from Officer Dan. It seems both he and Val have moved on to other relationships but I onder what the future has in store for them. I find myself once again eager to see what will happen next especially with the news at the ending of this book. I will not reveal what that was. Let me just say that if you are truly interested in a unique series that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the one for you!

I feel like after three books, I should at least say something about the series, so here's my two cents -- I really, really, REALLY enjoy these books. The main character, Val, reminds me a little of one of my favorite heroins out there, which is always a plus.
Not to mention her dog. That dog is hilarious, and I want one for myself.
The only problem I can find in these books are the beginnings. The first one started out great, the middle was excellent, then the ending was a little lacking, so it got 4 stars. After that, both book #2 and Fang Me, have had beginnings that have simply dragged. If I hadn't already gotten through Bite Me and expereince the awesome plot, butt-kicking and characters, I'd probably have given up on the book. I know it's hard to start a book already mid-action, because you need some background, but still.
However, it must be said that, once over the 7% of dragginess, the plot seems to take off, and there is no possibility of letting go until the book is finished.
Fang Me surprised me. I miss Dan Sullivan; I really liked him, and was hoping he and Val could sort things out. After the connection they shared in Bite Me, it feels... wrong, somehow, to have them simply part ways. It doesn't exactly help that, while I think Shade is a great guy and all that, all his mushiness, and lovey-dovey stuff just doesn't cut it for me. Still, while I wasn't thrilled about what went down between Val and him in this book, I have no stronger objections to the guy other than that he isn't badass enough for me, so I can't hate him for that.
I definitely recommend these books for anyone looking for some nice vampire story, filled with yummy supernaturals, hot guys, humor and a strong female lead.
4/5 for the slow start, I'm afraid.

I have enjoyed this entire series much more than I originally expected that I would have. Namely because vamp books in the current YA market seem to be trying to ride the coat-tails of Twilight with ridiculous and shallow romance and even more shallow plot.

Parker Blue has blown all that away with her series, proving that you can write an interesting YA vamp novel in this day and age.

Val is an interesting heroine who is supported by a lovely and colorful cast of characters who make her life easier and harder all at once.

Having said this, I have 2 things that grind my gears in this series:
1)Fangbanger, the (popular) origin of which came from Charlaine Harris, originally refers to someone who is obsessed with vampires. PB uses it to refer to the vamps themselves. As a avid CH reader, I get a little confused every time Val stakes a fangbanger.

2)Val refers to Dan as her ex, which kills me. Yes, he is her ex-partner, but after sharing a single kiss, you are not bf/gf. I can get that she still gets uncomfortable around him (even though Shade is way cooler...he he terrible pun) and the crush she had on him, but working together and sharing a single kiss does not a dating relationship make.
Maybe I just didn't read much into in the first novel, but it gets me every time she mentions it because the second and third books make it appear as though there was a genuine thing going on.

Despite these two issues (which are really minor all things considered), I thoroughly enjoy this series and look forward to reading more about Val.

This book takes place after Try Me; Val is trying to look for the missing book, Encyclopedia Magicka; she also wonders how to deal with the fact that she has a boyfriend, she wants to seal the deal ... but losing her virginity means that she will lose all of her power that makes her a slayer. In the meantime, a guy named Trevor Jackson, claims to be the keeper of the book, is getting on Val's nerves. She just can't trust the guy. And what's with this voice she keeps hearing, asking her to "Help, find me!"

"Val gets a boyfriend. Val gets a boyfriend." I know, I know, I sound childish, but I really enjoy the fact that Val gets herself a boyfriend, a GREAT ONE by the way. I still don't understand why Dan, which is quite the male main character in book one, is pretty much deleted from the story. But it's okay, I love Shade :).

The story is paced perfectly, Val still has that sharp mind-sharp mouth with her. Fang is still amusing, and Shade adorable. It's another great adventure of Val and her friends. I enjoy the more background story to the Encyclopedia. I also love how Parker Blue deals with the power vs. virginity issue that Val has. I think it's totally smart to go that way.

There will be another book in this series and darn, the teaser intrigues me!
