This was one of the first investment books I read, and at the time I thought it excellent. There are some good principles throughout this book. The concepts and examples are useful but upon reflection, best taken with a critical eye. I got the sense that the book presents a basic overview of value investing, without really providing a complete picture. It does present some tables to assist in estimating intrinsic value, they're a bit of a black box. The disappointing thing was that the formula and it's assumptions aren't explained to the reader. Overall it's an easy-to-read book that perhaps left me feeling more confident about my new found investing skills than I ought to, given that in the years since I've read somewhat more and am realising how much I have to learn to fairly value a business and apply that to investment in equities. To be fair, the first half of the book is well worth reading for a novice investor interested in basic concepts of Value. This first half is easy to read and entertaining, and the concepts relayed in a manner not too technical to grasp. Montgomery got me interested in Value investing so I'm thankful I came across his writing when I did.
