Loveday Trinick is a marine biologist with the Ocean Conservation Trust. Based within the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England, she teaches children of all ages about the importance of the ocean; she believes seeing children inspired by animals and creating connections to the marine environment is the best way to help conserve our oceans for future generations. She lives in England.
This book gives a lot of interesting information about the ocean and the animal that live there. There are sections all about whales, fish, reptiles, and every type of weird creature you can imagine!
I loved the beautiful artwork! The illustrations are colorful and graceful. It really makes this a special book, and it is so attractive to look through each page.
I really liked that the information is presented with all the scientific names and facts about each type of animal. There are lots of details like how large a particular animal can grow, in what habitat they are found, and what their behavior and habits are like. This would be a great book to use as a reference for a school project, but it is also just fun to read!
However, one thing that I really hate in scientific books is when a scientific THEORY is presented as if it were a fact. This is so unethical, and it would be so easy to correct. If only the text said, "One theory about the origin of the universe is... etc." But they don't say that. They write as if evolutionary theories are established empirical facts that have been tested and proven. But they're not. And it is dishonest to present a theory and pretend that it is a fact. It makes me not trust anything else that the book says. If they are misrepresenting one theory, they might be doing it all over the place. How can I trust what is written in this book if they aren't careful to present the information in the correct way?
Overall, I liked this book very much. It's very attractive and beautifully designed!

Tā man deva gan inteliģentu izklaidi, gan estētisku baudījumu.
The pictures are the real draw of this book. The endpapers instantly immerse the reader in the world of the ocean and the detailed illustrations inside depict the vast diversity of the creatures who live in it. Each illustration is labeled so that readers can identify the different species shown, and there is a key provided that gives quick facts about each plant or animal. In my house, the pictures have been enjoyed by ages 2 to adult.
This is a nonfiction resource that theoretically could be used as a reference book, but which works much better as a coffee table book that everyone picks up and looks at casually. There is so much information in this book that it would be hard to digest it all at once, but it is divided into small sections that can be taken in one or two at a time. The reading experience really does mimic a visit to a museum, in that readers can visit the galleries in any order and still understand what's going on. My science-loving 8-year-old is my target audience for this book, but we're all enjoying it.
I received a review copy of Oceanarium from Big Picture Press in exchange for an honest review.
The "Welcome to the Museum" series is an educational delight. Information and illustrations are simply "spot-on" in accuracy and will capture the attention of readers young and old. This is an oversized book and a bit heavy. So your "littlest" reader may have difficulty holding it. But do show it to everyone and explore it's depths of delight.
I recently saw a documentary on TV and it featured the oceans. Fascinating! Now there is a vast amount of information and pictures to feast upon in Oceanarium anytime you want to dip into it.
Sectioned by types of sea life the book explains with just enough information but doesn't overwhelm the younger or casual reader. The illustrations are beautifully done. The basis of the books seems to be to education the reader to the variety and vastness of the oceans of the world, instill a respect and love for the oceans, and in the end encourage one toward a goal of ecological responsibility.
I have reviewed other "Welcome to the Museum Series" titles and highly recommend this series. Including: Animalium: Welcome to the Museum, Dinosaurium: Welcome to the Museum, Fungarium: Welcome to the Museum, Botanicum: Welcome to the Museum.

Another beautiful book in the Welcome to the Museum series. I especially appreciated how they addressed how climate change and pollution affects the ocean. I’m in awe at the plants and creatures that live there.
This book was essential for our homeschool ocean unit study. It does have the theory evolution as an accepted standard within it, but it was a great opportunity to exercise discernment. The artwork is so lovely and inspiring. We used it as our ocean spine for the unit study.
Ta seria to klasa sama w sobie 😊
This is my favorite book in the Welcome to the Museum series. So much detailed information clearly and entertainingly written. The illustrations are plentiful, gorgeous and by the magnificent Teagan White. This is a coffee table sized volume that adults would find captivating as well as their children. Oceanarium would make an incredible gift and addition to a personal, school or public library.
Ta biolożka morska wykonała wielką pracę, by w sposób przejrzysty opisań czytelnikom zróżnicowany świat mórz i oceanów. Ta książka to skarbnica wiedzy i źródło niewyczerpanych inspiracji. Warto! Bardzo warto!
popłyńmy razem przez ocean wiedzy Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry
To say that Oceanarium, the newest installment of the ‘Welcome to the Museum’ series, is magnificent (ages 8-12) would not be doing it justice. My eyes popped wide open just by looking at the eye-catching cover art. This book is truly a work of art. Each page offers stunning ocean & marine life illustrations which are paired perfectly with the expert text, each one offering insight and illustration about the wide and deep beautiful oceans that are so important to our own lives. Oceanarium is a fascinating dive into the deepest depths of the ocean with incredible illustrations of sea creatures (some our own eyes will never see) plus scientific facts pertaining to the earth’s most significant feature. Written by a marine biologist and illustrated by a true naturalist, this book is stunning and would be a great coffee table book, a gift for a budding scientist and specifically in every school’s library. It is listed as for ages 8-12 but I feel it has a much wider berth than that. This bog book offers hours of visual exploration plus the accompanying text will expand knowledge and peak interests. This book leaves no stone, shell or flipper unturned. It is a giant pearl of a STEM book!
Well, I was a bit disappointed with this encyclopedia.
The illustrations are gorgeous, and the book as an object is beautiful. I don't regret having it on my shelves, and I will surely go through it again sometime. But the text was quite... Well, boring. I thought it was too scientif, with uninteresting details. I'm not sure kids would like this. I would have rather see more marine animals, and for example how to protect the endangered species, than the boring introductions on the different categories. I learned more about the animals on the little legends below the illustrations, than reading the entire page of text next to it.
I used this encyclopedia as part of my research for my current WIP. And even though I was a bit inspired by some of the animals, there is no doubt that I will have to do more research online to fully comprehend these creatures. And I think that's a bit of a shame to have to Google things when you have an entire book about it.
4.5 stars. An utterly gorgeous introduction to ocean life. Text intriguing and informative, and I can rave about the pictures for a week. Too many non-fiction reference kids books have weird 2D computer generated plastic illustrations, when they are supposed to be learning books and give as realistic and detailed picture as possible in my opinion. How are you supposed to learn what the wildlife looks like, when you only offer a 2D plastic imitation of the real thing? Learning books need to be very visual, but they are not for a display of an individual artistic style; the artist is supposed to serve the learning. The gorgeous illustrations in this book offer just that - a painted 3D realistic glimpse of nature's beauty and diversity.
The Welcome to the Museum series is one of my favorites to explore. The oversized (though obnoxious to shelf for libraries) is both the most beautiful coffee table book and opportunity to explore a topic they choose to focus on.
And I love the ocean, so this book explores everything from seabirds to turtles, whales to jellyfish. The way they highlight a group on the page and give a brief explanation gives just the right mix of curious information and captivating illustrations.
"True seals are identifiable by their lack of visible ears... Sea lions and the closely related fur seals do have visible ear flaps on the sides of their head."
We have never seen a book like this before. It is a true deep dive into all things ocean! This is most definitely what I wish all coffee table books were like… Detailed but uncomplicated illustrations and fantastically informative. It’s a pick and mix of what to read, with no worries over how much time you need to spend reading it as you can dip in and out of it. Also so useful as a “text book” as well in finding out more about a favourite ocean creature or plant. A book for exploring, just like a museum!
I include Oceanarium in my holiday gift guide, so fascinating is the subject and so museum-worthy the art. That comes as no surprise, though, as it is part of the Welcome to the Museum series! Divided by habitats and the inhabitants thereof, Oceanarium is meant to be absorbed like an aquarium visit. Beautifully illustrated full-color plates captivate while text and captions on the adjacent page identify the specimens and provide an overview of the habitat or type of creature. I do agree with the publisher's recommended audience age of about 8-12.
I find things concerning marine life fascinating, however for somebody that are up reading books filled with action and comedy it can be difficult to sit down and read facts written on pieces of paper. What I like about this book is that while it aims to educate, it does so in a more entertaining way that makes it more easy to read. I found myself reading this the whole way through without putting it down in one sitting, and enjoyed it immensely.
A new addition to the Welcome to the Museum series , Oceanarium is a timely offering for Earth Day 2022. This oversized book like the others in the series offers so much information (112 pages) for curious middle grade students (grades 3-7) and adults alike. The book is filled with detail facts about every aspect of ocean life. The book is written by a marine biologist from England and more than 200 sea creatures are covered in considerable depth. The illustrations are fabulous and appropriate and they generated a lot of discussion with my 10 year old granddaughter. One of our favorite sections was was entitled, One Ocean which generated much discussion on humans and the ocean. I loved that the index and references also included great information for future readings. This book would make a perfect gift for the curious oceanic explorer in your life. It would also be a wonderful addition to personal, public and school library collections.
Beautiful book. It says "welcome to the museum," and that's just what it feels like. Its size makes it feel like you're immersed in the book and each segment is a museum display. It is dense with information, and the illustrations are gorgeous.
Love the series and loved this one in particular. As a child, I was obsessed with everything to do with the ocean, and, I guess, some things just stick with you. This stunning book brings me much joy and even though the text is kept short and to the point, it was still an interesting read.
Filled with scientific details about every facet of the ocean. Extraordinary illustrations ! Good for middle school and up. Great reference book to visit again and again
