I enjoyed this book because it has the creepy gothic haunted mansion in the middle of nowhere feel to it. I loved the story of Phoenix and his dad travelling to Gravenhunger manor after the death of his mother and discovers she had kept secrets like this mansion and that she had a younger brother who went missing at Gravenhunger manor. I loved the feel of this book gave me the slight chills and the creepy place feeling. I loved the pace of the mystery unraveling it was good the only negative thing I didn't like about this book was the way Phoenix treated his cousin Rose going from no wanting her in his mothers old home and not wanting to tell her anything about the house despite her parents already knowing about the Manor he barely speaks to her and glares at her and then suddenly they're friends trying to resolve this mystery I thought it felt rushed and not enough time for them to form as friends after a rocky start. I liked finding out what happened to Phoenix's uncle Lorenzo and what happened to him. I enjoyed the fact that Phoenix's mother Elvira's spirit was able to move on when the facts came to light that she was not responsible for what he to her younger brother. I also liked the symbol of the silver angel and the emotional connection to it. This is a very enjoyable book to read on rainy days, on the bus or train on the way to school since it's not a big book but very well written and definitely my type of book to read

Our middle kids book club group (11-12 yr olds) read this novel featuring an ancient haunting.

We had a good discussion about the novel and felt that the beginning was slow, but then it was a great read. The lower results are from people who didn't get very far through the novel while the good scores are from those who finished and loved it.

We rated it: 9 / 5 / 4.5 / 9 / 7

When I let myself get carried away in the blustery, wintery weather in my creaky old house, this was actually surprisingly scary for a kids’ book. Atmospheric, but with plenty of adventure too. A really good read.

With a great cover and briskly paced story, this Gothic mystery about a grieving father and son who inherit a huge, brooding mansion called Gravenhunger in the English countryside demands to be read by middle grade readers who want a just-right spooky story.

A good story with lessons you can learn. There are things in life that we have to let go of. It felt like I was reading in my bedroom in the attic while there was a storm outside.

I think this is a very good book.
I have always read a book maybe 2 times a year but this one I might have read it about 5 times a year.
It really wants to make you read more and more.

It is about a boy Phoenix that seems to know that his mom did something very bad in this place that she could never forgive herself.
Phoenix cousin is here so they will try to find out the mystery together.
But first the 2 cousins need to know eachother a bit more and they need to nfluence their dad to stay here for a few weeks.
The mom of Phoenix died because of a sickness so they decided to go there for holidays.
But really weird stuff will happen to them.

It was quite embarrassing to finish this book as I was running my Year 4, 5 & 6 reading club at work. I was sobbing by the end of it. Beautifully creepy and surprisingly likeable characters though it took me a little while to warm up to them though I'm assuming that was the point. I'm a sucker for creepy old houses, and it was a great read to read during the winter.

The kids thought it was hilarious that I was crying, but I will say it's now one of the most popular books in our library. Enjoyed and wished it hadn't ended. I do like a good ghost story that pulls at the heartstrings.
