“Stuck” is the first book I've read by award winning author Becky Mushko, but it definitely won't be the last!

I was completely charmed by it. The child's voice telling the story is very authentic. 10 year old Jacie is dealing with her mother's death from cancer. Her father sends her to horse camp for part of the summer, where she falls in love with horses and riding. As a horse person, I am particular about the way horses are characterized in books, and about how horse terminology is used, and this book was dead on perfect with the details of horse camp, and learning to ride. Makes me remember how excited I was the first time I ever cantered, lol.

The relationship Jacie has with her best friend, and her battles with the mean girl from school ring very true. When Jacie comes home from camp, she finds out that her father is now involved with his high school sweetheart, and planning to get married. Jacie ends up sent off with her future stepmother to live on a very rural old farm—where she meets a ghost that is “stuck” there and needs her help. Again, the details of the farm are very accurate—such as when the electricity is out you also have no water, because the well runs on electricity! The bits about Jacie having to wash in the creek and brave the outhouse after it's checked for snakes and wasps were well done. The ending was very satisfying and tied all the loose ends together.

Recommend for anyone who likes well written and accurate horse fiction, or anyone who likes children's fiction.

Becky Mushko’s STUCK touches the heart.

When eleven-year-old Jacie’s mother dies, her entire world comes crashing down. She’s stuck with the class bully at horse camp. She’s stuck in grief. Then, she’s stuck in her anger over her dad remarrying a former high school girlfriend. When she meets a ghost who is also stuck, she learns how to get everyone unstuck.

STUCK follows Jacie’s progress through the stages of grief and growing up. At times, this novel brought tears to my eyes. Other times, I laughed and smiled, especially at the twins’ antics. Death features greatly, but it is more something to be sad about, a little mad, but not something to fear. Mushko’s knowledge about horses shines through as well as rural farm life. The characters are endearing, especially Jacie and her soon-to-be step-mother Liz. The glimpse of the paranormal and mystery is light and moving. STUCK is a fast-paced middle grade novel and invokes a great lesson of how to be unstuck in a bad situation.

STUCK by Becky Mushko delights in this emotional tale of grief, hope, and love. It may have been written with middle graders in mind, but anyone can find something to enjoy.

This was a great book, although the writing seemed young for middle grade. I especially like how it showed the evolving emotions of the main character as she heals from the death of her mother, learns to accept a new love in her father's life and unravels a ghostly mystery.

Lovely story

What a delightful book. It's certainly sad in parts but reaches wonderful heights of joy as it
progressed. Would definitely recommend it to adults as well as young adults.

Nice story

I liked this story. It wraps up very neatly, which is a little bit convenient, but that is okay. Recommended for middle readers.
