As chieftain of the Clan MacInnes, Lady Isolde will do anything to protect her people -- including sacrifice herself to the enemy. Donall the Bold, laird of the hated MacLeans, lies locked in her dungeon awaiting execution. But rather than slay him, Isolde comes up with a daring plan to forge a lasting peace between their clans. Though Donall curses his beautiful captor, only a madman would refuse to savor the pleasures beneath that tantalizing aura of dignity and grace. But Isolde offers a mere covenant ... and Donall craves nothing less than total conquest. Vowing to steal her heart and take his freedom, the renowned warrior instead will find himself in a different kind of prison -- one made of sweet, decadent passion, and one he may never wish to escape.
Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.
Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.
Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.
Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.
I liked this one! I was worried about pacing but it turned out to be a slow burn. It also took place over a month or so, which helped draw out tension.
One random thing I liked was that there was no mention of the characters' ages! I could guess but nothing was explicit, and my eyes weren't rolling out of my head at teenagers professing their love for each other.
This book was part of the Bad Decisions Book Club, but luckily it was a Saturday meeting.
WOW... I never thought that I would 'ere say this about a book based in Scotland, but NOTHING happened! You start the book and Donall has already been captured, and then you meet Isolde. Then he's taken to her room and they quarrel, she denies wanting to bed him (which in essence is what she wants), and he denies that he wants her in any fashion all the while thinking how much he would want her. And the pattern repeats it's self. She accuses him of murdering her sister by association, he denies it, they have more words and make eyes at each other. Finally they have sex, but she still denies even liking him. Then they have more sex. And then her betrothed's men com to the keep, everyone is torn in whether she is a harlot or not. Donall escapes, his brother comes with men they go back to the castle where they discover Isolde's uncle trying to kill her and he has reveled that he is the one that killed her sister. In the end it only really gets 2 stars because one of the final scenes made me laugh.
This novel started out very very slow in the beginning, with circuitous scenes of dialog that would just not end. Finally, around page 200, it started to get interesting! So I read on, and finished it, and did enjoy the ending.
This story is an older one that has been rewritten and speaks volumes to how Sue-Ellen's writing voice has changed over the years. I have to say that I enjoyed the first version of this in KNIGHT IN MY BED too but the reread was like settling in with a brand new story. It has definitely been overhauled and improved. She mentions in the Author's Comments that the publisher titled the book as if this read in 1st person and that's why she changed the title. Gorgeous new cover to boot!
First I have to say I loved the moments that I burst out laughing, I think my very favorite quote in this story was just two words... Holy Gods! Donall MacLean and Isolde MacInnes. (My favorite first name for a heroine, btw) They share the best banter, going at each other trying to hide their true feelings. They are a hoot! This story packs in everything I love from the beautifully detailed surroundings to the Olde Ways. Faeries, myth, and magick. Some animals who will burrow their way into your heart, and characters who you want to see more of. There's something afoot in a fowl way too that I sat just waiting for Karma to take a bite out of. Nasty, evil, thing. ... And Devorgilla. If you've read Sue-Ellen's stories, you know, and love, this wise crone. She is never far from those who believe.
I give this a solid 4 3/4 stars out of 5, and in the heat department from one flame to five, I give this a 4 1/2 flames.
I enjoyed the story of Donnell and Isolde, but some parts were long and seemed never ending. Not saying it was bad, but sometimes did not completely hold my attention. Definitely will read the next book in the series.
Omg it got so draggy until you know the part 😂😂 I almost didn’t finish the book. I persevered and by the end loved it!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰😊😊😊😊💜💜💜💜 On to the next book.
Knight in my Bed is an awesome page turning book. After reading this one I went on the hunt for others by this author. All of which had me staying up late to read them!! Highly recommend!!
A great rip-roaring tale with a very attractive hero & heroine pairing. As ever, this author's grasp of historical Scotland is first-class and I loved the pacing and development of the love story!
Verbose where it wasn't needed and without explanations in areas that needed to be expounded on for clarity. Transitions were nonexistent leaving me completely confused on more than one occasion.
Sweet love, but the concept of consent is long forgotten. If the genders were reversed there would be outrage and in an attempt to show that the man still has the upper hand he makes a speech when boiled down it simply states, "I'll have you, even if that means raping you." Both being tortured all day and then tied to a bed to perform "baby-making" duties and being told that your consent to have sex doesn't matter are equally repulsive in my view.
The characters were flat, the plot repetitious and overall I just simply did not enjoy this book.
I have trouble finding books by this author in my local Books-A-Million store and used book store. And it's a shame, because I've enjoyed the books I have been able to find by her. She knows how to write a good medieval Scottish romance. This is an entertaining story of revenge, surrender, and the desire for peace. Donall and Isolde keep the pages steamy.
quote from the book : "the cryptic words proving her addled state of mind" that was exactly what i thought of the author.this is the first book i am reading of hers and the last. it started off ok ...then we move on to witches and portions and bad breath and frogs legs( they eat frogs meat) WTF? i could not bear to finish the book.
The story was good, lots of suspense, but a bit more sex that I usually go for. Plus they were not married, which I do not like. But I skipped over the parts I did not want to read and the rest was pretty good. Interesting take on the Scottish Laird theme.
A linear plot without much depth. The characters were not developed and the book felt like it was written in haste, just to get the title on the shelf. The romance scenes were quite boring and did not add to the story. Definitely yawned through the last 150 pages.
