This is a completely honest review because I can't let these opinions bottle up inside. This book is... strange. *warning: stop reading here if you have any respect for me, the following review is me ranting*
This story is about Magnus and Amicia (I already forgot their names and had to check even though I finished this book a couple of hours before writing this review). They met when he's like 12 or something (this gets brought up a lot because this is the only memory they have of each other) Since the day they first met, they have secretly pined for one another( I wonder why). But Magnus had some trouble, lost his fortune and stuff, and Magnus's father married him to the rich girl, Amicia (supposedly the girl of hiswet dreams). But his pride is too big so he got mad. This book is basically Magnus being horny and in a state of denial, while Amicia is just a horny virgin strutting about the castle. Oh yeah, and there's a "curse" on the castle.
At first I thought I liked it, but then I realized wow... I really don't like this book. This is the third book I read this year and it nearly put me on a book slump! Maybe it's just me, but let me tell you why this is just not my cup of tea.
1. The Story & Romance
If you're looking for sweet stuff, don't bother.
I don't even know if I could call this book romance. I don't think this book has a romance, to be honest. It's just pure lust. Lust at first sight since they were 12. Never met again until they were married. You'd think they might have some sweet moments here and there, right? Yeah... no. The basis of their attraction is just how good the other looks. These characters are skin-deep. They said they love each other from the moment they first met but they didn't have meaningful conversations, they just find each other hot. That's it.
They talk like strangers except for when they dirty talk or about that one time they were twelve. ANd the whole thing where they met for the first time was just not it for me. They just met, he helped her, that's it. They literally don't know anything about each other. WHy am I frustrated about them being "in love" at 12? BEcause it kept being brought up as if this is such an importance even though there is nothing except them thinking the other is good looking. How about build the romance instead of throwing every basis of affection to a distant memory that shouldn't be of any importance?? Theyre like... "I love you bcs of that time when I was twelve remember?" WOah. I could understand that he could have a crush on her, sure. But the whole book, they kept pining each other, even though they know nothing significant about one another. They keep basing this "love" with that particular moment. Like what??? I barely remembered my crush, I surely wouldn't willingly marry them even though I find them attractive years later. It's just... frustrating to me ok???
When they said they loved each other since the day they first met, I just.... lost hope for the romance part of the book. I can't think of one reason why they would love each other other than them being horny. They never had a meaningful memorable conversation that shows true character. I kept waiting for sweet romantic moments other than body-related stuff and found nothing. STRANGELY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, they only "did it" once. Throughout the book. You'd think a romance book without romance, just using lust as base would have more than one sexy scene.. but nope! Anyways I'm not complaining. The quicker I finish this the better.
And the whole thing with the curse and the magic. Yeah, it's just so anti-climactic. I wasn't interested at all at the curse being at play but I still ended up disappointed. Huh, I wonder why.
2. Body Positivity?
Look, I love curvy heroines. I love body positivity. But if the literal relationship is based on looks, it just feels too superficial. I've never read any romance that brings up the body this much. There's a part where Amicia, our heroine, is self-conscious. He comforts her. Sounds a sweet moment, right? Wrong. Some people might think it is but I beg to differ. They don't know ANYTHING except each other bodies. He literally realized he loved her because of the sex. If you asked Magnus why he loved her he probably wouldn't know, or better yet, he probably just mention something about her boobs.
If you still disagree, then I'll look at it from a different angle. This book focuses too much on body type as a replacement of love that it has a huge factor in the story. There are literally parts where the clansmen followed the hero and heroine up to bed and undress them just so we could hear how they're hot. THERE IS NO SUBSTANCE. ROMANCE WHERE? ROMANCE IS NOT PRAISING SOMEBODY AND TELLING THEM THEY'RE HOT.
3. Insecurity
I feel like the fact that the human body was the main part of their romance proves there's something under the surface here, folks. Not to be too psychological, but I feel like there's some huge insecurity at play. Take Amicia and Magnus for example. What are their characteristics? Amicia was described as brave and Magnus as stubborn. She does talk like she's brave, but she keeps bringing up her body and how she doesn't like it, always comparing herself to a smaller girl (and maybe that's why there needs to be a scene where every other character watches her undress and praises her).
Then Magnus... he is very proud and also insecure about his money, which became a huge factor why he didn't interact with her much for half the book. I'm not hating the insecurity at play, but it does bother me how much it came up when there are other more important things one should pay attention to when writing a romance novel: Like perhaps, get TO KNOW YOUR HUSBAND OR WIFE OTHER THAN THEIR BODIES??? HOW ABOUT THE SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS HAPPENING? If the book describes one more time how Amicia hates her boobs and how Magnus wants to fondle them I'm going to kill myself.
4. The Writing
What happened here bestie? In the beginning, the book had an ok writing. It's cute, it describes a memory well, blablabla. Then what the hell happened? Well... I think the book just stretches out as it goes. It DOES NOT need to be this long, (keep in mind, this is a 300 pages book which is pretty short for my standard). This story could've been told in 100 pages istg.
At one point, the hero woke up and got up. This is described in three whole pages... just for waking up. In those three pages, we knew nothing new that has already been said and good god what the hell... I just can't bear it. It became more unbearable when you noticed it. They literally have paragraphs in between dialogue.
Yeah anyway, If you like lust-based romance with a drop of mystery and you don't mind long unnecessary writing, then this book is for you.

This book has been updated with new material and is re-publishing on Sept. 14th, 2016. I just finished the re-read and can say that it is better than ever! Sue-Ellen's stories always leave me with a full heart.
Magnus and Amicia have loved each other since they were young but circumstances have kept them apart until years later a proxy wedding to fill coffers bring them back together. Magnus returns home with his heart well hidden to find Amicia bound and determined to bring that love out. Trouble is brewing from a hidden source that endangers this woman his heart aches for and pushes him to accept what fate has had in store for them all along. This story reminded me to never give up. To always have hope and to believe. Definitely a keeper!

Another outstanding story by Sue-Ellen Welfonder
I loved this story of a long-standing family curse, of the betrayal, the will against and the will toward accepting help without the loss of pride.
I know I'm reading a Sue-Ellen Welfonder novel when I find the wonderful reoccurring thread of Devorgilla and her snazzy Highlander laces!
Just enough paranormal occurrences to make this an enjoyable Highland escape. How can you go to the Highlands without a ghostie or two?
I highly recommend Wedding for a Knight for a fun and daring come-uppance for a proud Highland warrior knight.

What I have learned from this is that no matter what you do even in doing your job as serving your country somebody always gets hurt and then they may even harbour such deep hatred for you to the point of madness and revenge ~ both are reasons enough for murder. And such is the case with the beleaguered MacKinnons. The clan's island position is perfect for watching over the sea traffic specially in keeping an eye on the French. Because of their diligence and constant vigilance somebody's lucrative spying business with the French was adversely affected and the suicide of the traitor including their children have maddened the surviving spouse enough to plan for revenge against the whole MacKinnon clan. But this is just one layer of the things that fazed and faced the Laird's heir at his homecoming following a defeat from a recent skirmish and the bitter knowledge that all that he has worked for (prize money from the tourneys he has won that would have paid for the clans' lost galleys and Janet's dowry) was stolen while he was out battling for his King, his Laird and father is now talking about seeing black ships that appear and disappear through the sea mists and that he is married by proxy. This... is after all a love story.

Se ha notado mucho la progresión de la autora según ha ido avanzando la trilogía de los hermanos MacLean. Las historias son mejores y mejores contadas. En este caso, por ejemplo, la historia te atrapa a veces por la intriga y la trama que encierra, aunque en otras ocasiones se te queda un poco floja. Me siguen gustando mas otras autoras de este género. El libro es entretenido pero sin grandes pretensiones.

I liked Amicia and Magnus' story but I didn't read the original version. This was the version that was part of Swords, Lords and Castles bundle. I never suspected the individual who was behind the McKinnon tragedies that seemed to plague the family. There were many plot twists in this story with a climax that you'll never see coming. There was a lot of suspense and intrigue in this book. If you like this type of story, this will not disappoint.

This is a cute book. I generally like books with Scots in them, not sure why, but I've never read one that was truly awful. Maybe it's just a genre that works. Welfonder is a good writer, and her writing style sets the atmosphere for the book. Amicia and Magnus are both developed well, and the mystery was clever enough that I didn't figure out who it was until the very end! Cute book.

I did enjoy this although it's very slow reading. It's the medieval phrasing, not so much the dialog, but the rest of it, that slows things down. It's a bit cumbersome for modern readers, including me. Still a nice tale of a couple who love each other and yet are reluctant to say the words to each other.

i really enjoyed most of the book but when i got to the bedding part it felt drawn out and the bride felt a bit annoying and redundant. not to mention pretty fast for the time period and her station so i skipped ahead to the end . otherwise it was a sweet stort

The old book that I first read in 2004/2005 ( and loved ) is practically brand new in 2016 ! The old love Magnus and Amicia shared as youngsters is new again in their present day .
For Magnus and Aimica it was love at first sight those many years ago . Because of their Clans off and on again feuds, they become separated for years . Although there were attempts to reunite, the pair were not to be . In the meantime Magnus goes away to become a Tourney Hero . He wishes to earn enough coin to bring his Clan better living conditions . He also needs to build a new fleet since his superstitious old laird father believes the Clan lives under a curse . On his way home, Magnus stops to fight at Dupplin Moor where the Scots take a brutal beating .While he is fighting, his three years of Tournament coin is stolen . Magnus returns home to discover his father has married him ( by- proxy ) to his forever love, Amicia! She is now a wealthy heiress and also her brothers have endowered her well. Upon reuniting, Magnus allows his pride to stand in the way of his love. Also his father is rapidly spending Amicia's bride money to rebuild the Clan's fleet . Amicia burns for Malcom ! She silently plots to have him set aside his pride and give her his heart. The plot thickens as an insider is attempting to rid the Clan of either father or son . At the same time, Magnus' addlepated father, the Clan's Laird is running around expounding the curse and seeing "ghost ships" appear and disappear but only he can see ! Amicia is not without challenges either . A tiny fae-like beautiful cousin, that grew up with Magnus, fancies herself his true love. She tries to undermine Amicia. Amicia feels too curvaceous and bountiful thinking Magnus prefers that body. She wants to seduce Magnus and get him in the Marriage Bed ! All is chaos, mystery, curses and sexual tension within the cold stones of Coldstone Castle ( therein lies another curse ) ! Do not forget Sue-Ellen's very own cailleach ( Devorgilla's ) with the red plaid shoe laces is here too !
As I said before, this rewrite of, "Wedding for a Knight", brings back a wee bit of the old and shiny bits of new . I really enjoyed it !
As always the frustrating part for me was the H and his alpha male stubbornness . Of course, without the internal conflict there would not be much of a story . Duh . This story line is fairly common in romance novels but Sue-Ellen owns it when she dresses it in a kilt ! OMG ! Thank you for the rewrite Ms. Welfounder ! Anymore hidden in the moors for us to look forward too !

Wedding for a Knight by Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a fantastic Medieval/Viking Historical Romance. Set in Medieval Scotland. Book 3 in the "MacLean" series, but can be read as a stand alone. What a powerful, and compelling story!
I enjoy Ms. Welfonder's vivid descriptions of the Ancient World, using Scotland as a background. She never fails to amaze me with her storytelling!

Sir Magnus MacKinnon, made his wealth, by selling his sword arm, warring and on the tournament circuit. However, when he returns home, to Stonecold Castle, he's penniless, after all his silver was taken from him, by thievery. Then he returns to Stonecold Castle, only to learn his father has married him by proxy, to a neighboring clan's daughter, whose dowry is already being used to help rebuild the clan's fleet and Stonecold Castle... Lady Amicia, knows not what to expect once Magnus returns home or how he will react when he learns of their marriage.

I enjoy Ms. Welfonder's vivid descriptions of the Ancient World, using Scotland as a background. She never fails to amaze me with her storytelling!

Sir Mangus MacKinnon has distinguished himself on the tourney field and on the battlefield. Now he's on his way home with the riches needed to restore his clan when he's robbed of everything he's won! Defeated and dismayed, knowing that the curse of Coldstone Castle won't be broken unless he can put ships to sea, Sir Magnus is horrified to discover that his wily father married him by proxy to the daughter of a former enemy and is spending her dowry. Magnus' pride is offended and he's determined not to accept any more of her money until he can restore the clan's finances himself. Unfortunately, Magnus is required to bed the lovely Lady Amicia whom he's secretly loved all his life but he refuses to become her husband in truth. Lady Amicia, meanwhile, has also secretly loved Magnus all her life and intends to win Magnus's heart forever. There are enemies within the castle who would have neither of them survive the wedding day/night. When Lady Amicia's life is threatened, Magnus knew that no matter the cost, his heart would belong to her forever!

This story had a great plot and characters, but seemed like the execution or writing style left it feeling slow and repetitive until the last few chapters. I found myself skimming some parts. How many times can a person read about grey swirling mist and the smell of a peat fire? Some parts felt like filler.

This novel was actually really good.
However, the second scene (where Magnus is actually told he's married and then Amicia is just chilling in the solar with him, his dad, and the friend, Colin) goes on literally forever. I lived and died three lives during the scene. It took like five days to get through. Just... way too much.
This happened a few times, with things just going on way too long.
Also, I don't believe for one second that Magnus wouldn't have been chill about being married. He knew the law of the land. He knew marriage-by-proxy was legitimate. He also knew it would be shameful to just send Amicia back. I know it was important ~to the plot~ (and for the sense of repetition to the original myth) for it to happen, but it was dumb and unbelieveable.

This is not my first time reading a book by this author, and Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a great writer, how she embellishes on the historical aspect of the story and using it to help with the events made me excited, for it wasn't expected.
- First I noticed that the inner talking and descriptions were significantly more than the actual talking, which was something of the few things I dislike in books.
- I understood the male pride part, even I as a women I'm reluctant from asking someone for help or use their money, even if they gave it willingly. Imagine it happen to a very prideful guy, and I sympathized with him cause from everyone words and actions as if they hinted that he isn't capable enough. However, in his moments with his wife I felt it unnecessary and annoying, but I was shocked from one night of sex with her, he relented bit by bit?!
- I mentioned that they didn't talk as much verbally as they talked to their selves, and even though the main couple announced their love to each other and they both understood it, it still didn't feel enough for me, to me their love for each other seemed to run deep for years, so I didn't feel that they understood the significance of it, it just seemed that they were treading shallow water like Barney's
"I love you, you love me too".

I read this book first many years ago in its original form and loved it then. The rewrite of this story is just as wonderful. I can't tell you how much is new because to me it seemed like a new story.
This is about Amicia and Magnus, a couple who have loved each other from afar ever since a meeting when Amicia was young and Magnus came to her rescue at the Game of Champions at which he won an archery contest. At the time the 2 clans where at odds due to a centuries old feud. There was also a difference in clan wealth. Magnus then went on the circuit to increase his clans wealth. His earnings were then stolen during a fierce battle of which he was one of the few to survive. He returns home to find his father has proxy married him to Amicia. Magnus's pride is bruised and with an age old curse besieging the clan, folly ensues.
Devorgilla, the old cailleach who appears in many SEW books, is of course in this one along with a couple of spirits who lend a hand in times of need. And there is a need with an unseen villain in the mist.
There were a few times when I thought the story rambled on a little (the claiming night). But other than that a fun read.

Lady Amicia MacLean is wed by proxy to Sir Mangus MacKinnon who isn't thrilled to discover this when he returns home from battle. However, his Clan Fingon desperately needed the coin her dowry brought and, Amicia was lovely to behold. Lady Amicia had loved Mangus since she was a child and was thrilled with the marriage and determined to use all her womanly charms to change his mind. But all was not right within the walls of Clan Fingon as a "curse" dogs the household with Mangus' father seeing "ghost galleys" offshore then falling through the gardergrobe and Mangus' bedchamber burning down. When, the day after Amicia and Mangus finally consummate their marriage, much to the delight of everyone, Amicia, Mangus' cousin Janet and old Dagda disappear during the worst storm to hit the Hebrides in decades, Mangus finally realizes that he's loved Amicia all his life too. The question is, can he save her in time? Also, who is behind this "curse?" The answer to that is a surprise! If you like Scottish medieval romance with a touch of the supernatural, you'll love this one!

I knew going into the book that it was probably not going to be my kind of book and I was right. Nonetheless, I always like a story set in the Scottish Highlands - the wildness of the nature has an incredible hold over me and always manages to make me smile.
There were a few instances in the book that made me laugh, especially when things got mixed up again or the characters had a particular moment of brain malfunction.
I wasn't all that fond of Magnus' constant denial of everything, especially when it was clear that he was basically lying to himself - though he sometimes seemed to have moments of clarity where he realised that it was basically nonsense what he was doing or telling himself.
Amicia had fire, which I quite liked, and even Janet redeemed herself.
The whole magic part was nonsense though. Either there is magic or there is none. Proving it wrong just to have it pop up in a different fashion in another spot just doesn't make for a very linear and plausible story, in my opinion anyway.

This is story of couple whom knew each other since they were younger and had fallen in love but as they grew elder Magnus went away and ended up losing all his wealth in battle. Upon return home he finds out that he has wife by proxy and the family has started to use her dowry to rebuild third ships and home. The lady in question is none other then Lady Amicia of whom he lived since wee lad. His pride tries to rule him over and feels he has noon need for a wife especially when he has no coin to his name.
Lady Amicia has always loved Magnus even when third clan was considered enemies. While she loves him and wishes to be his wife she fears that a marriage by proxy shows he has not the same feelings as she . All she wants is to be loved by him and will not give up till she has his attention and his heart.
I loved how this author always incorporate s animals and her one character dorvigilla is Alps in her other name books. This author always seem to add the folklore of Scotland in her novels. Great story And beautifully written

What a lovely love story!! Amicia and Magnus!!! A love that withstood time!!! Poor Manus and his family had so much bad luck and believed that they were cursed!They had lost all but family!Magnus had so much Pride that he could not see the love right in front of him!! He thought he was not worthy!
Amicia comes in and she has everything that a person could want except the man she desires more that anything! She had been in love with Magnus since she was a young child and he was in love with her(even though he was too stubborn to admit it to her). She had everything to give to him and he wanted nothing!!!
His heart that was
surrounded by walls was cracking some (Who know how long it would have taken him) until the end . I myself was ready to throttle him!!!
The characters are so vivid and come alive so well!! The description is so clear you can feel the chill and the wetness of the rain!!
I will read this again and cherish it because it is such a beautiful love story!!!

Forse se avessi letto prima gli altri libri della serie l'avrei apprezzato di più....E' chiaro infatti che i due protagonisti hanno un passato comune dove è nato il sentimento d'amore che entrambi nutrono da subito (ma che si guardano bene dall'esprimere ^^'') ma il lettore ottiene solo accenni e stralci...ci voleva un bel flashback degno di questo nome! XD Se la parte romance non mi ha convinta molto, ho trovato invece la parte paranormal molto carina e ben gestita anche se la fine è leggermente tirata via in tutta fretta ^^''

If you love historical fiction you will love Sue Ellen Welfonder 's wedding for a knight its pack with historical reference and speech and it takes you back in time to Scotland. There is a lot of descriptive writing which really triggers your imagination to picturing the scenes as they unfold.
My favourite character Lady Amicia MacLean she is independent head strong and determined female who really captures the story for me.
A lovely love story with a beautiful historical scene with some mystery and excitement along the way how can you not like it.

I really enjoy historical romances and this was no exception. This one involves a stubborn Scottish man who has been married by proxy to the one woman that can break thru to his heart. Magnus is determined to not let Amicia see how much he really cares. His pride stands in the way of their happiness but Amicia is determined to earn his love one way or another. With the battle lines clearly drawn, can these two make their marriage work?
This book is a quick and easy read. I read it straight thru. I love strong, independent heroines and this book delivered.

Frustrating
I kept on reading trying to find something in this book but just couldn't until the end. It is like trying to run alongside something, to some destination only to get nothing along the way and when I got there. That wedding night was so silly. The h just couldnt stop talking. Not sure if I like this style of writing at all. It left me empty even if I was willing to give it a chance to move me.

This is a cute book. I generally like books with Scots in them, not sure why, but I've never read one that was truly awful. Maybe it's just a genre that works. Welfonder is a good writer, and her writing style sets the atmosphere for the book. Amicia and Magnus are both developed well, and the mystery was clever enough that I didn't figure out who it was until the very end! Cute book.

I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this story! This is the third book in the MacLean series but is definitely a stand alone. If you have never read any books from Sue-Ellen Welfonder you don't know what you are missing! I loved the story of Alicia and Magnus and I think you will to!
