Semir Zeki
13 books31 followersis a British neurobiologist who has specialized in studying the primate visual brain and more recently the neural correlates of affective states, such as the experience of love, desire and beauty that are generated by sensory inputs within the field of neuroesthetics. He was educated at University College London (UCL) where he was Henry Head Research Fellow of the Royal Society before being appointed Professor of Neurobiology. Since 2008 he has been Professor of Neuroesthetics at UCL.

Davvero interessante. Il linguaggio non è troppo complesso, ciò lo rende comprensibile anche a chi sa davvero poco di neurologia e percezione.

Anche in questo saggio, più tecnico rispetto alla mia precedente lettura di questo autore, il neurobiologo non si smentisce: il rigore scientifico si intreccia con una scrittura chiara, a tratti sorprendentemente poetica, che rende accessibile e affascinante un tema complesso come quello del rapporto tra percezione visiva e produzione artistica.
Zeki parte dal funzionamento della corteccia visiva, guida il lettore attraverso ciò che sappiamo — e non sappiamo ancora — su come il cervello costruisce la visione del mondo, e lo fa con esempi concreti, mai scontati. Le opere d’arte diventano qui strumenti di indagine neurobiologica, ma anche chiavi per comprendere quanto sia attiva, selettiva e interpretativa la nostra visione. Non si tratta semplicemente di “vedere” con gli occhi, ma di “decodificare” e costruire significati con il cervello.
Il testo è accompagnato da immagini di neuroimaging e opere d’arte, in un passo a due che non solo arricchisce e chiarisce il contenuto, ma rende evidente — anche visivamente — quel continuum tra arte e cervello che costituisce il cuore del libro.
Le implicazioni diventano ancora più interessanti quando Zeki mostra come alcune lesioni cerebrali — come l’acromatopsia, che impedisce di percepire i colori, o la prosopagnosia, che impedisce il riconoscimento dei volti — possano cambiare radicalmente la fruizione dell’opera d’arte. Che effetto può avere un quadro di Rothko, Malevich o un ritratto rinascimentale su un soggetto che non distingue i colori o i volti?
Zeki non si limita a fornire dati, ma suggerisce una visione più ampia e profonda: quella per cui arte e cervello non sono mondi separati, ma due facce dello stesso bisogno umano di dare forma all’invisibile, di rincorrere un senso, una verità, una bellezza assoluta, pur consapevoli che — come scrive in "Splendori e Miserie del cervello" — l’assoluto ci sfugge sempre. E forse è proprio questo slancio verso l’oltre, che definisce la nostra natura più autentica.

La lettura di questo saggio risultava obbligatoria per sostenere l’esame di psicologia dell’arte e, devo confessarlo, me ne sono innamorata.
Capire come funzioni il cervello visivo e come funzionino le varie aree deputate alla visione e all’elaborazione di elementi quali colore, movimento, forme e dettagli di varia natura non è certamente facile, ma Zeki riesce ad accompagnare il lettore in questo viaggio in modo chiaro, sostenuto, con un linguaggio alla portata sostanzialmente di tutti.
Egli riesce a sfamare la curiosità di chi legge con dati sperimentali ed ipotesi assolutamente plausibili relative al mondo delle neuroscienze visive, campo in cui Zeki eccelle in modo evidente, condendo il tutto con considerazioni divertenti e piacevoli legate al mondo dell’arte.
Perché capire (almeno parzialmente) i processi associati alla visione e all’analisi dei componimenti artistici, non può che evidenziarne con stupore la prorompente bellezza.

Ένα εξαιρετικό βιβλίο από τις Πανεπιστημιακές Εκδόσεις Κρήτης για την Νευροβιολογία των Εικαστικών Τεχνών που παρόλο που γράφτηκε από «απλή περιέργεια» όπως δηλώνει ο συγγραφέας του έχει συνέπειες «ανατρεπτικές» όχι μόνο στενά στην Βιολογική Τεκμηρίωση της Αισθητικής τουλάχιστον των Εικαστικών αλλά και στην Γνωσιολογία εν γένει. Ένα ακόμα βιβλίο που αναδεικνύει ότι δικαίως ο 21ος αιώνας είναι Αιώνας του Εγκεφάλου, η αποκάλυψη των μυστικών του οποίου θα κόψει «γόρδιους δεσμούς» που η φιλοσοφία κι άλλες συναφείς επιστήμες προσπαθούν ακόμα να λύσουν. Ήλθε καιρός να αμφισβητήσουμε την καθεστηκυΐα άποψη μέχρι πριν 25 χρόνια, ότι βλέπουμε με το μάτι και κατανοούμε με τον εγκέφαλο. Η Εσωτερική Όραση του Semir Zeki με γλαφυρό τρόπο αποδεικνύει ότι τέτοιος επιμερισμός Αίσθησης και Αντίληψης τουλάχιστον στην Όραση ΔΕΝ ΙΣΧΥΕΙ!!!
