Enchanting, exquisitely detailed and full of personality, Katherine Dewey's animal sculptures delight all who see them. With the friendly medium of polymer clay and the step-by-step instructions in this book, you can achieve the same magical results! Inside, Katherine leads you through then utterly charming projects, such as a sweet little bluebird, a basset hound and a white-tailed fawn. And that's just the start! The "Making Changes" chapter will help you create your own original animal creations by changing poses, making realistic bases, and even modeling your animals to look like bronze, fade and other materials.
My wife was an artist and into many crafts. She had only gotten into polymer clay a short time before she passed. In an attempt to find something we could share I sought out books on clay modeling. Now that she is not here I still have these books and hopefully will be able to continue in this hobby.
I really enjoyed this book, and I have made several sculptures using techniques I learned from it. First, I tried a couple of the projects outlined in the book, but I then moved on to using what I had learned to come up with my own ideas. This is a great book for someone who has gone beyond being a beginner with sculpting polymer clay and who wants to learn to do something a little more advanced.
This is a fantastic book with ten worked examples including bears, birds, mice and frogs. When I say worked I mean really incredibly well explained, step by step and in great detail, including painting, basing and armatures. I’m planning on working through a few of them and I’m expecting good things.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the horrendous editing on the kindle version. There are typos right the way through that look like someone did a find-replace, so every time it should say "ball" it says "hall". Glue-> clue, etc. The worst one is that, apparently if you heat up the clay too much you can "bum" your clay. I've flagged these so hopefully they get fixed up shortly.
Outstanding introduction to making 3D models in Polymer Clay. Katherine Dewey begins by introducing us to the different types of polymer clay and their properties - saving the beginner a lot of time and money in choosing the right clay. She then explains what tools you will need and how to make them, which keeps start up costs down even more. Dewey also guides you through the scary stuff like how to make armatures and what paints to use.
The brilliance of this book lies in the step by step lessons for modelling each project. The images are clear and accompanied by detailed text. She even includes handy diagrams to show how the clay pieces will be pieced together.
The projects include; Deer Mouse, Seal, Basset Hound, Fawn, Black Bear, Bull Frog, Bluebird, Siamese Kitten, Fox and Rabbits.
Finally she explains how to alter size, position and how to mount them on a polymer clay plinth.
In short, achieving professional looking pieces of art are achievable with this fantastic guide. This is a book to treasure for animal modelling enthusiasts.
Pros: * Covers clay basics better than many books. * Great painting tips for folks more comfortable with clay than with paint. * Lots and lots of photos to guide you through the steps.
Cons: * Projects are all very involved (mine took 5-6 hours each), making it a poor choice for beginners or impatient types. * I would like to see more of a bridge from the step-by-step examples to making your own animal sculptures.
