Author S.E. Schlosser has been telling stories since she was a child, when games of "let's pretend" quickly built themselves into full-length stories. A graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature and Rutgers University, she also created and maintains the website AmericanFolklore.net, where she shares a wealth of stories from all 50 states, some dating back to the origins of America.
I've lived in South Carolina my whole life, in a few different cities. Some where in here, and some I've visited where in here. These were really neat stories told around the state. They were more of story telling rather than spooky happenings in my opinion, but still very good and really neat to read about. It also has a map of spooky places to visit!
I really enjoyed this book. I have read many haunted and strange tails stories (especially around SC), and this one was amazing. Not only were these written in story format (which is always best), but they were written different ways, from third person to first person, to folk lore stylings. I highly recommend this book even if you don’t believe.
My mom got this book for me while she was on vacation. It was a really fun read especially considering I've been to most of the cities/beaches it was telling the stories about.
i liked the stories in this book, but the language felt a little too contemporary to me. i would have also liked to know more about the origin of the stories... where the author gathered her information, who she talked to, how she found them, ... various versions of the stories. i'm guessing more research based information would have made it feel more complete to me. i do like the "resources" section in the back and will be checking out a few of the titles there from the library very soon.
I probably would give this a 3.5. The stories are interesting and spooky, but they are also written in a storytelling style that I don't think really worked in a print format. The frames of the stories could be kind of hokey, and I think the book would have been better if the stories had been told in a more factual style.
This book is a great way to read into the history of a place and it even has a map of where you can see this. i picked it up when i was sight seeing at a light house the one in my profile picture actually, and i couldn't out it down. Its creepy but even creepier because they are true stories.
Not as scary as Spooky Oregon, but loved the Southern tales, like the Boo Hag and the Plat-Eye. We have Big Foot, so enjoyed hearing about other creatures in other parts of the country.
