Katie Reus® is the USA Today bestselling author of the Endgame trilogy, the MacArthur Family series and the Deadly Ops series. She fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom's stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn't always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors many times, she finally graduated with a degree in psychology. Not long after that she discovered a new love. Writing. She now spends her days writing paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense.
I listened to the audiobook and narrator Jeffrey Kafer has one of those deep voices that I enjoy listening too too. You would think it would be hard to listen to him narrate the female lead voice but it really isn't. I don't know how to even describe how such a deep voice can read a female part successfully, but he does it. I am able to completely immerse into the story as he reads and I know exactly what character is talking.
The story itself was just as enjoyable. This is a romantic suspense that involves a heroine as a reporter who uncovers a murder and puts her life in danger. The first person she thinks to go to is Mac. Mac is a former Marine and the perfect person to run to for protection.
Killer Secrets is a pretty short read/listen, but full of impact. The pace was spot on. Despite the shorter story, I felt like I got a full picture of who Eve and Mac are as people. Because of these two knowing each other since they were kids, their relationship didn't feel rushed or forced. I enjoyed this very much. ARC provided by author.
Wow! This narrator did an amazing job! I struggle sometimes with a male narrator doing a female voice but not so with this one. Both characters exploded into life through his narration and I fell in love with both Eve and Mack, experiencing all their highs and lows as Mr. Kafer gave them each such depth of emotion.
Eve Newman is in the wrong place at the wrong time. When she is unable to trust anyone with what she has witnessed, and terrified that she is being hunted, she turns to Macklin Quinn, an ex-marine turned rancher. They grew up together and things between them are a bit strained but she knows she can rely on him to help her out.
Mack has it bad for Eve but he hasn’t made a move on her since his return to their small town. She’s a feisty little bit but when she shows up in a world of trouble he doesn’t hesitate to step in. What he doesn’t expect is how extreme the danger to her is and what steps he’ll take to keep her safe. If she’ll let him.
I loved this couple so much! Mack is the perfect alpha, possessive, protective hero while Eve, a strong heroine in her own right, is still able to admit when she is afraid and in need of him. Together they made my Kindle sing! The steam between these two was off the charts and the danger felt real and authentic.
This is a fast read with a great foundation and secondary characters necessary to the story. The conclusion was believable, maybe a tad predictable at one point, but so satisfying. It is full of action and thrills as this couple race to find the villain before anything “else” happens to Eve. I loved every moment of it!
A quick but enjoyable read with a great blend of romance and suspense. I loved Mac and Eve and they had great chemistry together. My only complaint is the lack of character development due to the short length of the book.
I liked both Eve and Mac and enjoyed their chemistry and their relationship together. It’s obvious how much they care for each other and their long friendship helps support their insta-love. The action was interesting and well paced and there was just the right mix of romance and suspense. Because it was so short, there wasn’t a ton of development or history on the characters. Their romance relies heavily on their shared history as friends.
Writing short novels requires a great deal of talent, since the author has to pack a lot in just a few pages. Something few manage to do successfully. But as always , Ms Reus outshines as a storyteller by giving the reader an engaging plot with complex characters . This one centers around journalist Eve Newman, and former Marine and rancher, Mac Quinn. They both have been secretly attracted to each other since their youth, neither telling the other one. When Eve finds herself in a bind, she goes to Mac for help and protection. The story is full of suspense, whodunit, and of course romance. I love that the author manages to give us a strong woman and an alpha male that can handle her. Another winner by this talented author. The narrator , Jeffrey Kafer, does a great job with the voices.
Mac and Eve have known each other since they were kids, he realised he had a thing for her when he was 18 and she was 16, but of course he knew he could never touch her as she was his best friends little sister. Eve has had a thing for Mac for what seems like forever but he had never shown that kind of interest in her and she didn’t want to do anything to ruin their friendship so kept those feelings to herself, until one night when she found herself in danger and knew he was the only one who could help her.
As they both knew each other and already had feelings this cannot be termed as insta-love but it did seem to happen quick, but then this is only a novella so it had to be, having said that for a novella it sure did have a lot of content which was full of both romance and suspense. As with all Katie Reus stories this was easy to read and the story flowed well keeping us on the edge of our seats right until the end wondering who was the killer and the person trying to see her dead!
I was given a free audio copy by the author with the request to leave a review, but it was not a condition and not compulsory to do so. The story was read by Jeffrey Kafer who in my opinion did a good job.
Fast paced romantic suspense with lots of action. Eve and Mack have been "friends" for most of their times but it takes Eve's life to be in danger for Mack to make a move. For such a short read this one packed a punch. The villain was definitely the least person that came to mind. I think it focused more on the suspense aspect and lack a little on the character development but it was still a good story to pass the time.
I really enjoyed this novella. I haven't been reading much lately because I haven't had time to dig into a full-length suspense book. I'm so glad I found Killer Secrets, a great read for a very busy week.
REVIEW Absolutely loved this action-packed, romantic, mystery with suspense to boot story and a who did it? but a Oh I didn't see that coming. Eve is a reporter which keeps putting herself in danger. Enter Mac who is always there if she needs him but this time he needs her too in more ways than one. Eve is as much an Alpha as is Mac so this couple gives us all the thrills and also show us their emotions. The narrator does a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life.
Jeffrey Kater as narrator, did an amazing job, I prefer male voice for audio even to the female part he did a great job. The story was great Nothing like being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which happened to Eve. With Mac, ex Marine to turn to, and having a long friendship, he believed her. Seems like reporters always get mixed up, but in this she is now hunted. Great story, given audio for my voluntary review and my honest option.
Journalist Eve is following up on an anonymous tip when she walks in on a murder...then the body goes missing and someone is after her. Eve seeks refuge with rancher, and her brother’s best friend, Mac. As Mac works to help Eve solve the mystery, and keep her safe, the duo explore their mutual attraction. Is an HEA in the future for Mac and Eve or will the bad guys win?
There was absolutely nothing remotely suspenseful about this book. I found myself continuing only in hopes something exciting would happen, but it never did. Not sure why even have it a 2. Weak characters and predictable plot. Simply boring.
Another phenomenal read by Katie Reus! Killer Secrets, is hands down the best book ever. Filled with action, danger, mystery, trust, friendship and love this is a story any book lover will want to read.
Strong independent damsel in distress. Macho alpha male races to her rescue. There is banter back and forth. Guns and fists fly. They give into their urges. The bad guys get caught and they live happily ever after. The end.

REVIEW: This book held my attention – but unfortunately it was held by the romantic aspect alone. The plot, while interesting, seemed a bit excessive. I think it is a good read, but I’d be happy at seeing something a little more believable.
The characters Eva and Mack were lovely to see and I wish there could have been more of them. I liked the background Ms. Reus gave to them and found myself wishing they’d get together as well.
The writing seemed to have extra words, some of which could have been taken out and made the story stronger. I do look forward to watching Ms. Reus grow as a writer and can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.
Eve Newman has always had a "thing" for her brother's friend, Macklin Quinn. Secret is... he has always had a "thing" for her two, however, neither of them have ever acted on their feelings. When Eve, a journalist, gets a tip that leads her to discovering a murder, she is thought of by the killer to be a loose end.
Eve turns to Mac. As a former Marine, he has what it takes to protect her. Feelings bubble to the surface and although they pull away after a searing kiss, they both know that something is going to change between them, but whether they turn away from each other for good or fall into each other's arms is uncertain.
Eve is run off the road and then on the same day, she and Mac are nearly blown up. And what is supposed to be a simple charity event turns into a near murder.
I'm not sure why exactly I was nearly bored with this story. Read in one day, it followed the typical romantic suspense formula, which has been done so many times maybe that's why I can't give it more than three stars. Good, easy writing, nice characters, only no twists, turns or anything that really makes this stand out than others. A nice in-between filler before moving on to another series, but that's about all.
Eve Newman a journalist in Hudson Creek, Texas got an anonymous tip regarding a juicy story not wanting to let anyone else get the story first, she decided to go meet some unknown person at a place of that say person's choosing.
On her way to her rendez-vous, Eve walked upon a meeting gone bad between two individuals which left one man dead Allen Martin and an unknown killer chasing after Eve. Fearing for her life, Eve turned to the only man she knew would protect her no matter what.....her first crush and her brother's best friend, Macklin Quinn.
Mac has always loved Eve, the latter is the only woman who ever had the power to drive the former crazy in a good...After finding out that Eve witnessed a crime, Mac wasn't about to let her out of his sight no matter how hard she tried to keep him out of it.
With Eve's life is danger, Mac did everything to find out who killed Allen Martin and who wanted Eve dead....Admist the danger, Mac and Eve got closer. The action, romance and suspense were well done.
Killer Secrets follows Eve, a spunky small town reporter who finds herself in the middle of a murder-in-progress. She gets away but knows someone saw her. So who does she run to? Hunky rancher Macklin Quinn.
Between being run off the road to having her car blown up, Eve is placed in lots of danger in a short period of time. I liked that she still wouldn't give up on following the case. It's a novella so the mystery isn't overly complicated but there's enough meat to keep you involved and wondering who's behind it all.
Plus the chemistry is great between the characters. There's a scene where Eve asks Mac to put a shirt on. He thinks it's because his scars bother her. It's not. It's because she can't "concentrate" when he's half naked. I loved that!
This book was more of a sensual romance, not explicit. But if you like things even hotter, try her Ellora's Cave book "Dangerous Deception". I adored that one too. It was a great suspense with smoking hot sex scenes :)
This was another solid read from Katie Reus. I love her characters. Eve is smart and strong, while still having her vulnerable side.
Mac is your typical strong, ex-military, rancher. He's protective, but not stiflingly so and he's got a brain of his own that he's not afraid to use.
What I love about Ms. Reus' books are that she doesn't ever resort to the typical trope of having the helpless female needing the alpha male to come rescue her. Sure, there's a lot of rescuing going on, but it's never because the women are helpless or stupid.
I enjoyed the storyline and the resolution. It's a short book, so there's not a lot that I can really tell you without giving things away. But another very satisfying and exciting read.
I think the story was too ambitious for the length - the story is only 6 chapters. Eve has a history where the police shoddily handled her parents death, so when she witnesses a murder, she doesn't go to the police, but her brothers friend, Mac. Mac and Eve have been fighting their feelings for each other for years. I wasn't really clear why - Eve says he's not the type to settle down, but that isn't supported by what is in the story. Eve has some TSTL moments. The villains seemed over the top, and also just seemed stupid in how they react at times - not sure how they hadn't been caught before this.
Brief rom-sus novella. Nosy reporter receives an anonymous email telling her of nefarious doings, almost witnesses a crime and runs for her life. Former beau saves her and you can probably figure out the rest. What makes this one a little different is the fact that they all know each other and the reporter has a good reason not to trust a whole lot of people. That makes this one more interesting.
An OK read, some action, some suspense and some smut. A journalist, Eve, and the childhood friend/former marine Mac and the tip she got that now is trying to kill her. Quick and kind of like fast food, nothing to remember afterwards but kind of fun when you gobbled it down. I´ll read more from Katie Reus, though.
Eve was a pain in the ass. She kept putting herself in dangerous situations and having to be rescued. Mac was sexy, and fiercely protective of Eve. It was clear that they loved each other from the beginning. Why they fought their feelings for each other was beyond me.
Great story, Mac and Eve are great together, she's a reporter getting into trouble and he helps her out. It doesn't hurt that they both have loved each other their whole lives. strong characters and a great romantic story keeps you going throughout the book
