Megan Duncan is a lover of all things paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi and anything just out of the ordinary. She is continually fighting her addiction to chocolate and living in her overactive imagination.
Claire just turned eighteen so her mom is taking her down to the blood bank to be tested as a donor. In Claire's world, the vampire royals rule along with humans and humans donate blood to help feed vampires. They even learn all about vampire politics in school. The vampire King and Queen long ago wanted humans and vampires to be able to live in peace so they set up the donor system. Some humans are against this and protest but Claire's mom is a vampire activist and believes in working together for peace. The next day vampire royals show up at Claire's house claiming her blood is pure and special which has not happened in a hundred years. They would love for her to join their family and be their princess. Her mom supports vampires and is so excited that this opportunity has been given to her daughter. Claire is sad to give up her life but the King and Queen will treat her well and she will be able to make a difference and one day be Queen. Claire is learning to love life at the palace as a princess and has even become close with Dmitry another vampire that lives at the palace. Except she needs to stick with tradition and take a blood mate thus bringing in a very interesting love triangle with revealed secrets and a twist ending. I found all the characters intriguing and enjoyable. In the beginning I felt some details were cut short but as the story progresses I became very engrossed and the details of the ceremonies were unique. Also I became emotionally confused at the end because I absolutely loved Dmitry but at the end the blood mate really grew on me! Opens up so much more to happen!
Only $0.99 on Amazon so well worth it!!! Surprisingly addictive! Finished the whole thing in one night. It was kind of like Trylle Triology but with vampires. I am already dying to know what happens next.
Holy cow. Can I read this? Can I power through? Will I live to see the end of it?
I'm not sure if it's because I'm reading a kindle-version of the book, but this thing has so many grammar mistakes that it's making my head hurt. And it's not just a typo here or there, a missing apostrophe every once in a while. No, it's the whole darn thing. Every time a character opens his or her mouth, it makes me want to cry because it's so outlandish, so not the way people speak. The random switchoff between contractions and "You are" and "I would"s is really annoying the heck out of me.
The plot is weak so far, and I'm not even that far through. I can't sympathize with Claire at all, and her style of narration, frankly, sucks. It's dull. It's boring. It's mundane. I absolutely can't stand her, and you can throw the usual relate to the protagonist junk out the window. The only things we have in common is our sex and the fact that we both love cats. It took me a bit to realize why I usually relate to characters--usually the books are aimed at book-lovers. But this? Claire is honestly the most uninteresting, shallow character I've ever 'met.' Really. She keeps talking about how close she and her friend (Sarah?) are, and yet she goes on to say how she doesn't like to tell her things and doesn't trust her. Well, shoot. Doesn't sound like a best-friendship to me.
This had the potential to be great, a divergence from your run-of-the-mill, vampire-fantasy-paranormal-romance crap, but no.
I’m not big into the vampire scene. Ok, I liked the Twilight books. Hell, I wanted my own Edward. I read all the books before I went and saw the first movie because I wanted to see what all the hype was. Since that series though, I haven’t been able to get into any type of vampire books. I read Vampire Academy after so many people told me how good it was, and it just didn’t do much for me. Now you’re probably wondering why I read Savor. Here’s my honest answer. I wanted to participate in the blog tour but I hadn’t read any of the books, and I told the tour organizer that. She asked me to read the first book and I said, why not. For further honesty, I never really checked what the books were about, just knew the covers looked good and I know a lot of people were into this kind of series.
Night One: I started reading. First thought was ugh, vampires. Second thought, hmmm, interesting, different take on the whole vampire stories. Third thought, damn, I can’t put this book down! Finally, an original story of modern day vampires, turning into a vampire, selection, etc. Megan Duncan, I could kiss you!
Vampires are reigning over the different regions. Humans, 18 and over are donating their blood willingly and happily to the blood banks that provided the blood to the vampires. This, in turn, keeping the vampires from having to go back to the savage ways of feeding on the innocent and protecting the truce between humans and vampires. The vampires are the government who manage the laws and protect all.
Claire is found to have pure blood. She has been chosen to be the King and Queen’s daughter, and will be turned into a vampire to than become their successor. Upon arriving to the palace, she makes a quick friend with another member of the royal family, makes enemies from those that she has now taken out of the succession, and finds herself feeling quite overwhelmed. Turning into a vampire has a unique twist and the after effects are a delight to all. But all is not well in the palace. There is romance but there is also danger and a stranger who has been watching from afar becomes a hero who also is the only one who she finds is brutally honest with her. The ending answers some lingering questions that would nag at me once in a while and the story just explodes into a whole new dimension.
The story moved along at a wonderful pace. Not too fast and not too slow. The details woven into the story complemented the scenes. The only things that felt a little off were some questions you would think Claire would have asked and a bit of the dialogue was flat. Other than that, I found this story to be a wonderful beginning to the series and I can’t wait to read the rest!
This is the second book that I have read by Megan Duncan (my first being "Released") and as such I find it difficult not to compare the two. One of my largest complaints about "Released" was that I found the book to be lacking in description (Megan's writing style was very to the point, with little dilly-dallying to it) and therefore I had a difficult time connecting to scenes, however I did not find myself experiencing that feeling whatsoever as I read this book- everything was described beautifully in this book and as such it was almost near impossible to not situate yourself in Claire's position. However, I must admit that there were a few times in the book that Claire very much grated on my nerves (more so in the beginning of the book than the end), as she seemed a bit too superficial for my liking (unlike Abby from "Released" who didn't have enough time on her hands to be worry about superficial things. You know, being busy running for her life and all).
And like "Released", this book has a swoon-worthy male lead. Scratch that- TWO swoon-worthy male leads. I typically hate love triangles so I am astonished to find myself getting excited by the prospect of a love triangle playing a major role in the next book, "Indulge". While Dmitry seems to be perfect- non-judgmental (especially when compared to his slightly psychotic brother), gentle, and good-looking, I must admit that I find myself more interested in Arrick- though we know nothing about him when compared to Dmitry (call me a sucker for the underdog/ bad boy).
Though this book is vampire-based, it is quite unlike any other vampire book I have read to date. While the book does start off quite slowly, the ending of it (especially the last twenty or thirty pages) more than makes up for the slow beginning- you will seriously be kept on the edge of your seat during these ages AND the last two or three pages will leave you flabbergasted and slack-jawed (in the best possible way). Seriously, I need the next book in the series, "Indulge", NOW.
When Megan asked me to review Savor, I was thrilled. I had already read her Released (Agents of Evil series #1) and I loved it. She is a very good writer and knows how to keep you interested throughout the whole book.
Savor (Warm Delicacy Series #1) is the beginning of what I believe will be an amazing series. What I think I liked most about this book, is the direction it takes in the end, and I’m really excited to see where this series will lead.
I was immediately intrigued by Savor’s dystopia world which is now ruled by vampires. As soon as Claire made her first trip to the blood bank to give her donation to the vampires, I knew that her blood would gain the attention of the vampire leaders; I just didn’t know where that would ultimately lead.
Only a day after her 18th birthday and first donation, Claire is swept up in the luxury of being considered a princess. This is something that I particularly had a hard time with. For the most part, I wasn’t really caring too much for the whole fairytale story part of the book. I also had a difficult time accepting how well Claire quickly adjusted to the huge changes in her life and how accepting she was about the whole process. There were several times when her true emotions would come out and then I would think…”Yay! She is finally showing normal human behavior!”
When Claire is taken to live with the vampire royal family, it was really difficult to decide who I should trust. But I immediately fell in love with Robin and Dmitry. I particularly have a soft spot for Robin . . . she has this sweetness and quirkiness about her and she makes Claire’s “transition” a lot more pleasant. There’s one part in the book where Robin gives Claire a gift, and I was touched so much by her gesture that I had a tear or two in my eyes. And then there’s Dmitry! There’s something really funny that he does to Claire (that she happens to get angry about), and I know this might sound weird, but that one particular incidence made me really start to like him.
I was really disappointed that Savor ended where it did. However, it ended in a cliffhanger that appears to take the story in a direction that I think I would really enjoy and that I foresee would get me really attached to this series.
Let me first start by saying I read Megan's book, Released a while back and did a review on it so when she contacting me to read her newest book, Savor - I was thrilled to be able to read another one of her books and Savor was all that I hoped it would be and more! I loved the whole idea of the beginning of the book. Where in the world, humans know about Vampires and respect them. Once a human turns 18 years of age they are required to donate blood at a local blood bank to help provide food for vampire families. When Claire the main character has to go and do her part the day after her 18th Birthday and donate blood, she soon comes to find out that her blood is special: perfect! The Vampire Royal family invites Claire to come to there home and will make her a offer that she will not be able to refuse.
Claire arrives at the home of the Royal family where she meets the King and Queen who tell her what her blood being perfect will come to mean. They want her to become a Vampires but also their Daughter. Claire makes the hard choice to leave her old live (her Mom and best friends) behind and begin a new as a Royal Vampire. Although Claire seemed eager to leave her old life and become a Vampire she later has many questions about her new life only to meet some new friends, who are also Vampire's living with her. Although some of the Vampires she meets are not as they seem, but very evil. Seems like not everyone in the Vampires home is happy with the choice that was made to have Claire become a Vampire Daughter to the King and Queen. On the night of Claire's "Coming out Party" - A dance to celebrate her joining the Vampire family the humans are far from pleased and try to ruin the ball. Now a decision will be made to find Claire a "blood-mate" to keep her protected from Humans and Vampires as well. This one decision will turn Claire's world around - Once she learns who he is and who he has come to protect Claire from. The ending will leave you hungry for more....
Yes, Megan Duncan has done it again! Savor is a sensational read! This book will so not disappoint the reader but will leave you hugging the book once you are done wanting more. I so enjoyed Claire's character as well as all of the others, well not all. I did not like Ana one bit - She was always a royal pain in the a**. Other than that each character throughout the book was very entertaining to read about. The story held my attention throughout the book with little or no gaps of being slow or dull. Savor was well written and I could perfectly imagine the story in my head as it played out. Although I believe Vampires book are now coming out at a overwhelming amount per year. I found Savor to have a fresh and unique story-line that was very enjoyable. A very fun, fast read and I loved the ending!! I cannot wait to find out what happens next. I would very much recommend the book to YA-Adults - And to anyone who loves Vampires, Romance, and a page-turning Paranormal Work of Art - SAVOR!!!
Savor begins a bit slow, but quickly picks up momentum. I struggled at first with connecting to the story, but soon enough the story sucked me in. Claire is a likable heroine, but not a particularly memorable one. In a sea of YA vampire characters, she just did not make a big enough splash for me. That being said, I will admit as the book progressed she did in fact grow on me.
Although, I feel it was Robin who really stole the show for me. Robin is a member of Claire’s new royal vampire family and she is an absolute riot. She’s bubbly, sweet and incredibly enjoyable. I also enjoyed both of the love interests in the story – Arrick and Dmitry. They could easily be seen as opposites; where Dmitry is more of a gentle, playful soul, Arrick is intense and rather overwhelming. I honestly do not know who I prefer at the moment; I am not entirely sure I am sold on Dmitry and we really did not get much time with Arrick.
While I was reading the book I found myself questioning little plot tidbits here and there. I thought I was being so incredibly smart, thinking, I’d found plot errors; never bothering to question rather or not they were intentional. Duncan is a sneaky one folks. She definitely leaves you clues and hints, but they are small ones. As the story progressed, I started piecing things together, but I never imagined what Duncan had it store. I mean, holy plot twists, Batman; that was certainly a doozey of an ending. A paging-turning, cliffhanging, hair-pulling, ending.
The storyline itself was also incredibly intriguing; I cannot remember ever reading a story in which the vampires were looked upon as good. Granted, there is still political strife in Savor – people who rebel against the system, but for the most part Duncan presents them as idolized characters. It certainly is an interesting take on things; I have grow very accustomed to the “get out your pitchforks and knifes” kind of plotline.
Long story short… I’ll tell you this; I want the next book pronto. Savor defiantly had some bumpy spots, but overall it is a solid start to a new series. Duncan weaves an intriguing story full of mystery, excitement and romance that is sure to dazzle fans of vampire fiction.
The writing sucked, the heroine was so uninteresting, it was actually sad. The characters were the most bland bunch of boring people I’ve ever met. I was hoping to read a new take on the age old vampire story, but despite the really interesting concept, the plot and characters were just lacking. This is one of those books you wonder how you were able to power through, and finish. It was a complete Waste of my time!!!😭😭😭😭
Ever since reading Released by Megan Duncan I've been waiting anxiously for her second book, Savor, to be released. Savor is the first book in a brand new series about vampires, royalty, and a girl who's life just keeps more and more complicated.
Savor tells the story of Claire, an eighteen year old who lives in a world run by vampires. The vampire royals who rule Claire's region take care of humans, unlike the vampires in some of the other regions, but there is still a lot of animosity between the races. Humans protest against the Royal Family and refuse to sign up to donate blood to the blood bank for vampire consumption. But not Claire. Claire is finally old enough and after being raised by her pro-vampire mom, she's more than happy to donate.
When a man arrives at her door the next day saying she's been chosen as the new vampire princess, Claire is a little less eager to comply. It means leaving her friends and her mom, everything she's ever known. It also means being turned into a vampire. When Claire agrees to becoming vampire royalty she never expects the turn her life will take.
Can she overcome the harsh realities that go along with living forever in the palace or will her enemies get the best of her? And how will she ever decide between the two men she comes to love? One who she's never even met.
Savor was a fun read, it's quick and entertaining. The characters were likable and the vampire society was so detailed that I found myself wanting to learn more about every aspect of it. Especially the other regions because no one talks about them. Guess I'll have to wait for the sequel to learn more!
There were a few things that got on my nerves as I was reading the story. Claire and her new vampire friend, Robin, giggled like the palace was pumping laughing gas through the air vents. I know that they're eighteen year old girls, but do eighteen year old's really giggle THAT much? If so, can we check to see what's in their water supplies, because its unhealthy.
I also found it a little odd how affectionate Evilyn (Claire's new vamp mom) was with Claire. I mean, almost right off the bat there was a sense of motherly love. Hugging, kissing. It was so instant and out of no where it sort of seemed suspicious to me. Made me question Evilyn's motives. Is she really as sweet and good natured as she seems, or does she have an agenda?
I'm not usually a fan of the insta-love between characters in paranormal romance, and I wasn't when it came to Dmitry and Claire either. They went from meeting each other and being sort of friendly to being madly in love the next day (with hardly any interaction in between). It just seemed a little ridiculous to me. I mean, sure, there's a scene where they have some sort of magical connection, but it still just seemed too fast for Claire to decide she loved him. And even worse was how she acted like she was betraying him when she was going through with the Blood Mate ceremony. They weren't even dating! They only kissed once. I just didn't see any legitimate reason for their feelings besides the fact that they decided they liked each other. It seemed to have little to do with any actual feelings on either side.
On the other (more hypocritical) hand, I adored the mystery man! He alone had me ripping through Savor hoping he'd finally be introduced to Claire. Their connection, while still magical and instantaneous, had a more realistic feel to it. They were connected magically before they had even met, so it seems a little more natural when Claire talks about her feelings for him.
During the course of the book Claire must go through a few different vampire ceremonies. Before each ceremony someone always wants to talk to her, yet they never explain what will happen at the ceremony itself. Claire is always left wondering what to do, much to the annoyance of the people performing the ceremony. I found myself becoming annoyed at Evilyn and Robin because every time Claire would ask them what the ceremony would be like or what she would be expected to do, they would simply say they couldn't tell her, or that she would figure it out. I'm sorry, but if you are forcing me to undergo ritual after ritual then I would demand to know what those rituals consist of. I'm not going into a room full of hooded vampires and priests with daggers and silver goblets unless I understand what is expected of me first.
The writing seemed a little forced at times but it truly didn't bother me that much. I liked the story and really wanted to see where it was headed.
All in all, I enjoyed Savor and can't wait to read the second book in the Warm Delicacy series, Indulge. I have to get more of the mystery man now that I know who he is! And most importantly, what happened to Louie?! I need to know!
Loved loved loved this book! So unique than anything I have ever read. Also, being super short and exciting every page of the way! Highly recommend ! Can't wait to read book2
(There are very slight spoilers of the romantic kind and this paragraph will be marked with a ***)
Vampires are everywhere these days- in books, on tv, in the movies-so much so, that for a paranormal novel about vampires to standout amongst its peers it must truly be fresh, original, and captivating. Megan Duncan’s Savor is all these things. Savor is an edgy, sexy, fast paced, exceptionally well written vampire novel.
Claire is a normal 18 year old girl living in a world where vampires rule. Humans are required to get their blood tested once they come of age and donate blood monthly in order to sustain their rulers. The day after Claire turns 18 she learns that because of her perfect blood the royal vampire king and queen wish to turn her and make her their new daughter and future heir. Claire is quickly whisked away to the Royal home and a brand new life. Claire’s new life comes with new abilities, new responsibilities, the kind of family she always wanted, and complicated romances. The more Claire learns about her new family and about herself, the more she begins to question everything.
Savor starts off a bit slow in the first two chapters, but quickly finds its pace and flow, and by the 5th chapter I found myself completely engrossed in Duncan’s words. Duncan has created a fresh twist on the world of vampires and filled that world with entertaining characters, a captivating storyline and some complicated, fun romance.
I haven’t come across too many stories that, for the most part, do not depict their vampires as the dangerous bad guys, but instead as the revered, and even adored, saviors and leaders, as Duncan has in the beginning of this book. I found this twist quite refreshing, yet at the same time I worried at first that this would take away all the dark edginess that vampires are so well known for. But the more I delved into this book, the more layered and less black and white Duncan’s vampire world became, which I think gives it not only a refreshing paranormal quality, but also a gritty, refreshing realism as well. No matter how fantastical or supernatural Duncan’s characters or situations may be in this book, there is always an underlying sense of relatablity.
The characters are a lot of fun to get to know; I enjoyed meeting them and seeing them develop throughout the novel. Claire is a realistic and relatable teenage character. There are moments where I loved her sharp wit, her stubbornness, and her refusal to take crap from anybody, but there are also moments when I wanted to roll my eyes at her, yell at her, and even smack some sense into her. Robin, a fellow vampire who quickly becomes Claire’s BFF, was very easy to like; I found her upbeat optimism and silly humor to be infectious and I always looked forward to her appearances. Ana, another fellow royal vampire who hates Claire, is nasty and vindictive in the most enrapturing way; she’s a lot of fun to love to hate.
***Then there are Claire’s two romantic interests- Dmitry and Arrick. These two guys are both sexy, enticing, and swoon-worthy in their own unique ways. I think readers will be just as enchanted and conflicted by these two as Claire is. I can already predict a Team Dmitry vs Team Arrick battle amongst readers…and yes, this reviewer has already chosen her team, but I’m not telling! The romance and chemistry between Claire and each of these two guys really sizzles. Duncan describes every touch and look in such a delicious, shiver inducing way that I found myself anxiously longing for each guy to appear in every scene. And in case you’re wondering, in my fanciful head Dmitry looks like Ian Somerholder and Arrick looks like Jensen Ackles.***
I really liked how vivid the imagery in this book is. Duncan’s attention to detail and her complete descriptions made it very easy to picture the palatial royal house in my head, or imagine the velvety feel of a dress or the taste of warm blood sliding down my throat.
The last few chapters through to the end left me breathless. Duncan ends the book with plenty of surprising twists and turns and questions that have me very excited and anxious for the next book in the Warm Delicacy Series. Overall, I found Savor to be quite the delectable read and I think anyone who is looking for a unique vampire paranormal-romance will want to take a bite outta this book!
Claire has just turned eighteen. She’s looking forward to partying with her best friend, Liz. But first she has to get her Donor ID card. Claire lives in a society protected by the Vampire Royal family. All the vampires ask in return for this protection is regular blood donations. Now she’s eighteen, Claire must get her blood checked out, to make sure it’s all ok for the royal family. Only, Claire’s blood is special. And she is chosen to be the vampire Princess. Should be a dream come true, shouldn’t it? Well, it isn’t. Claire has to leave her family, friends and the only life she’s ever known. And once in her new home, she finds out that someone is out to get her. But all is not as it seems – including Claire herself… I loved this book! It had blood, mystery, romance and friendship. I was sucked into the world, with all the different regions, different behaviour, and order in each. It was really interesting. And I loved the characters! Robin especially. Though I wasn’t sure who I could trust sometimes! Plus, Megan did the story in a way that had obvious meanies, but hidden threats. I may have to reread the book, see if there are any clues… Claire was cool, just an ordinary, relatable teenage girl who happens to have been chosen to be a vampire. She did ‘normal’ stuff, such as talking to herself when she got really mad, and was also scared of needles. I loved that teenager side: the way she refused to pay attention in class and therefore knew next to nothing about vampires. She was also very independent and stubborn as hell. But, sometimes, there were just moments when I felt like yelling at her. In her defence, though, she did just have to leave behind everyone she loved, everything she knew and she didn’t even have a choice. Even in the moments when I wanted to shake her, I felt so sorry for her! Robin Willow was really cheerful and super nice. She was incredibly hyper, cheerful and her bonkers moods were just unbelievably infectious. Obsessed with history, she was so cute and just like a little kid sometimes. Also, she was completely, wonderfully mad. I already mentioned this, but she was my very favourite character! And the friendship between Claire and Robin was too cute! They were so sweet, teasing one another, and their relationship felt completely believable. There were many vampires. You have King Nicolae and Queen Evilyn, both of who were kind and regal. The Willows, who were responsible for documenting history, were also very loving. The Ravens… not so nice. They were ‘real vampires’, dressed all in black, cold and quiet. And the daughter, Ana, urgh! Hated her! Though, I have to admit, hating her was rather addictive! And the Orlovs: the family who have the gorgeous Dmitry. He was so cute, and his fascination with humans was just downright adorable. And the scenes between him and Claire… perfect. He was wonderful: a perfect, swoon-worthy love interest. But, the plot thickens. There is a second, mysterious guy. I see the potential for Teams. I have chosen mine. The world was great, but what made this book truly special was the vampires. They were like our celebrities. Everyone looked up to them, almost as if they were some sort of gods or higher beings. It was really different, seeing as in most books the vampires are hidden or hated – or often both. Although there were a few points that I was uncertain of, such as Claire’s irrational reaction of being chosen (she didn’t seem overly resentful after, which I know I would be) and the occasional lack of contractions, overall I loved this book. Honestly, I was hooked, desperate to know what would happen to Claire. Plus, there was a massive twist at the end! One I honestly did not see coming. Which is why I will end with: I need book two! I HAVE to know what happens next!
I was all too happy to join the blog tour for Savor, having read and enjoyed Megan Duncan's first book, Released. But I have to say, I loved Savor much more than Released!
I haven't read any vampire books lately, and so I jumped into Savor with a clean slate and was thoroughly surprised. Megan Duncan's writing style has vastly improved from Released, transforming from 'good' to great! Her prose flowed nicely, and Claire's narration was distinctly hers. Plus, the vampire world that Megan has created is really different than most vampire books I've read. It's a bit reminiscent of the Morganville Vampires series, but the comparison is relatively small. I do think that fans of the Morganville Vampires series will enjoy Savor quite a bit.
There were a lot of great characters in Savor. Claire was faced with the difficult decision of whether or not she would become the new vampire princess, and eventually inherit the throne from the King and the Queen. At first, she agonized over the issue, but then, too quickly in my opinion, she came to terms with it. She made a complete and total life-altering decision, which uprooted her from her old life and threw her into a strange new one, and I felt as though she settled into her new life much too quickly. That was really the only thing that bugged me about Claire, that she could so easily forget her old life, and the people she loved. But other than that, she was a strong girl, who didn't back down from a challenge, and handled everything with maturity and rationality. Robin, a vampire girl around her age that she meets at the royal palace, and becomes best friends with, was also a really great character. She was funny and I could tell that she really cared for Claire. She added a bit of spice to some of the scenes.
There was a dash of insta-love, but it wasn't too bad. Claire meets Dmitry, a very handsome vampire that lives in the palace, and their connection gradually builds from the first day they meet. Claire and Dmitry are a sweet couple, I just wish their relationship had more time to grow. Towards the end, there was major hinting of a love triangle, but the book ended before that could be built upon more, so I guess I'll just have to wait for the sequel.
Speaking of the ending, that was one of the two thing that I really just didn't like. It ended in a place that felt like the middle of the plot. I feel like there should have been just a bit more story added to the end, with more explanation of what was going on, because the last 10 pages or so really threw me for a loop. There was a major explanation that's important for the whole series, but it was so abrupt that I couldn't even fully digest and understand it. There's always the sequel, which is great, so the ending isn't too bad because even though it left off in a weird place, the story will continue.
The other thing (or things) that I didn't like were Ana and Luke, who were two vampires that lived in the palace and hated Claire with a passion because she "stole Ana's throne", which Claire didn't, not really. Their evilness was a bit too campy, especially Ana. Sometimes subtly is a million times more menacing than outright disdain, and Ana definitely could've used some menacing subtly.
On the whole, though, I really did enjoy Savor very much. Whatever problems I had with it are minor details in the grand scheme of the whole novel, which I thought was well written and unique. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel! I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
Megan Duncan created a brilliant piece of work here. A combination of a unique and interesting plot, fun characters, and an intriguing world create an enthralling read for every paranormal lover out there.
When I first began blogging, Megan sent me an eCopy of her debut, Released. It was the first self-published book I had ever read. I absolutely adored it. When she told me she was writing a vampire book and asked me to be a part of the tour, I jumped on the opportunity.I'm beyond thrilled that I did. Megan's skills in this book surpassed those that she displayed in her first book, and my expectations for this read were exceeded.
First, the world. That was the very first thing that drew me in. It was almost dystopian-like. Vampires ruled as King and Queen. Okay, okay, that's pretty neat, right? But it gets better. They don't feed off of humans, but they also don't feed off of animals. All the vampires ask is that humans donate some of their blood and in return they receive tons of protection. Throughout the novel, quite a few questions arose for me. Right when I didn't think they'd ever be fully answered, they are. And with a surprising twist. Then you realize you are left in the dark on purpose and when you finally come into the light, it carries one hell of a punch.
Then there are the characters. Claire tries to be positive and tough, but she gets angry fairly easily. She wants approval and to be important, but then she realizes that those things aren't really all that they are cracked up to be. She misses her best friend and her mom. but tries really hard to adjust to the vampire ways. Claire is an extremely relatable and likable character. She has to make a lot of tough decisions and those are what majorly helped me connect to her. And the boys! I thought I LOVED Dmitry and that I would for sure be on his Team. However, when Arrick makes his first REAL appearance I can't help but root for him and begin to wonder if Dmitry is really who he says he is and if he really cares about Claire. My favorite, though, would have to be Robin. She's fun and energetic and adorable and a nerd! Definitely someone I hope to see more of in the next book.
I'll admit, the beginning of the book was a little slow, but it really picks up towards the middle! I couldn't stop flipping the pages. Seriously. And then when I thought I had everything figured out....BAM. BOMB. DROPPED.
This book was highly enjoyable and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel!
REASONS I LIKED IT:
- Fight scene. Seriously, Miss Duncan knows how to create an EPIC fight scene. I was all like, "Claire's gonna win. No, wait! Bag guy's gonna win! No! Claire. Wait....the bad guy is at it again." It definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.
- The cover. Is it not beautiful? And so fitting. I love the blood puring down the side. And the beautiful texture in the background. It's sort of elegant and mysterious.
Amongst dozens of vampire based Young Adult novels there is always one in a dozen that stands out amongst them. This is one in that dozen that stands out the most with its bright maroon/red cover and the amazing mix of dystopian, modernization, monarchy and vampires.
In the beginning we meet our main character Claire as she gets ready for her issuing of her Donor ID now that she's 18. In this world Megan created for us, we all each live in different regions wherein a vampire King reins amongst the humans. But in this region instead of brutally killing humans for blood like in the dark ages, humans donate their blood to the system monthly for the vampires. This clearly gives the region a sense of peace between humans and vampires.
As Claire's blood goes through testing before she gets her official Donor ID, the blood is tested and is concerned one of the purest of blood seen amongst the humans for years. And this catches the eyes of the King and the royal family. And they want Claire to be heir of their throne and their new daughter and Princess.
We follow Claire as she moves into the home of her new family and the process between her humanity all the way to her coronation and further. Claire holds a stern character that I liked a lot and immediately clicked with her character. She wasn't annoying or overly overwhelming. She was just the kind of teen I love to read about. Despite the fact that she had to leave her home and away from her friends and mom for perhaps forever, she rather took it well. If I was thrown in that situation I wouldn't be able to handle leaving my family that way.
The secondary characters were all easily liked. Especially Robin with her enthusiasm and cheerfulness I liked her immediately. But of course, there are those characters that you can’t help but loathe with their antagonist complex and such. Grr’s at them! Then out of nowhere Megan teases us with a shadowy hot figure in the distance that Claire can’t see but feels a strong bond for. Then Megan had to add in the whole whispering hotness that he is. And when we’ve finally met him she has to end the book! Of course, it was all before the fighting bits and the explosion which I found exciting but I won’t go further into.
Megan Duncan wrote such a beautifully written novel with few details and still managing to get the message out there. The storyline, love and bonds were realistic and new. An unputdownable read filled with love, family, and pure guardian hotness that annoyed me that it had to end. I look forward to Indulge!
Savor wasn't that bad of a book. It was pretty typical in a vamp story sort of way and I actually liked it. But there were somethings that bugged me about it. First, I have to say, this is like my third kindle book that I have read, and I have noticed with all of them there is a LOT of grammar problems, this book probably being one of the worst so far. But, though it can be very irritating, I can look past them and continue with the story. Another thing, that kind of went along with this, was some of the spoken writing. I know that the vampires are supposed to be old, and would speak differently, but how it was put together (old English mixed with new) didn't really work. It came out sounding a little awkward and just didn't go together well. Okay, now about our heroin, Clair. In the beginning, I had a hard time connecting with her. She seemed a little to superficial and wish-washy. One of the things that really irritated me, was her way of making decisions. She would disagree with whatever was offered, or whatever situation was at hand, then she would talk herself into it, and go along with it. Like she did with the decision to become a vampire. First she didn't like the idea. She didn't want to lose the life she had already planed, didn't know why they wanted her in the first place, and was afraid of being used for some big plan that she didn't know about. All of these very good reasons to back out, right? But after talking to a few people, getting very little information, and a whole bunch of promises to tell her everything later, she agrees. Why? Well, maybe it had a little to do with feeling sorry for them, still, not a good enough reason for me. Or, is it because if she didn't, there would be no reason for this book in the first place, more likely. But anyways, this way of making decisions continues, over and over again, repetitively in the book. As for the story itself. It took a long time to get to the actual plot, but when I finally got there it seemed interesting enough, and I am eager to find out what will happen as this series continues. Definitely looking forward to more Arrick!!!
What a book! The world that Megan created around Claire is quiet brilliant!
Your 18th birthday is about freedom. Getting your ID, partying with friends, having your blood cataloged, you know the usual. Well in Claire's world, this is the usual. You are required to supply the vampire royal family with blood, in return you receive safety & rule of the government. As quickly as Claire's able to enjoy her future, it's taken away. Her blood is compatible with the King & Queen Vampire, and they want her to become the heir to their throne. Wait, what?? Claire is now faced with the decision to become a vampire or not. (In this part of the book I felt as though she truly struggled with her decision, which is why I connected with her so.) Feeling as though she's destined to do great things, Claire does step up to the plate and becomes a vampire princess.
Following her transformation jealous is a HUGE factor around the palace. One of the families that has been living with the King and Queen for years thought that they'd be next in line for the throne, now with Claire as the heir, their b---not nice---daughter Ava feels the need to make Claire's life hell. (seriously, this chick has issues) Pushing through all this, the King & Queen (or mom and dad) inform everyone in the region that Claire will be placed with a Blood Mate to ensure her safety. Like her own personal security guard, but super strong & fast.
As the story unfolds, all the little loose ends suddenly come together. Creating a story that you NEVER would have seen coming a mile away. Then the book ends...of course...so now I am patiently awaiting book #2. Don't laugh, yes I have patience...sort of.
Ok, I absolutely loved this cover, it is gorgeous! Actually all of Megan Duncan’s book covers are fantastic they really make you want to pick up all of her books, and honestly I’m attracted to any (pretty) red cover. So, does the book hold up to cover? Well, mostly, there are some serious redundancy issues, there were a couple of sentences where the word ‘family’ was repeated 5 or 6 or more times and you just want to yell “I GET IT, MOVE ON” but really those instances are sparse. Also there were a few typos like rearranged letters in words or letters left out, but nothing to big.
The story, I did like, the romance was limited and more realistic than a lot of other young adult books, she didn’t meet a dude and instantly want to jump his bones! The characters were fairly well-rounded out and the story does seem pretty unique. I have been seeing an overabundance of Nyx lately though and I guess a goddess of Chaos is fitting to be a vampire goddess, but . . . I don’t know she’s usually portrayed as a benevolent being when really she would have enjoyed the chaos and war that vampires could bring instead of fluffy bunnies. But hey that’s just me and Nyx is very briefly mentioned and not really a plot point in the story. I think the author does well drawing you into this alternate reality of Vampire royalty who struck a peace with humans, so they don’t hunt and kill anymore, instead the humans have to go down (after they are 18) and become donors. It’s still feeding on people but in an impersonal and a lot less dead kind of way. This book is only 99 cents so you should pick it up, admire the cover and jump into the story, it reads quickly and is appropriate for teens and tweens.
The vampires in Savor are different. They are so different, in fact, that they have convinced the humans in their region to donate blood to them and store it in blood banks. These vampires are the leaders of the government and they live side-by-side with the humans. It sounds crazy, but it works for them and I really loved how different their society was.
The story is told from Claire’s point of view. She is a human living among the vampires, when she learns the ruling royal family wants to turn her into a vampire. There is much freaking out, but Claire eventually comes around. Since these vampires are good, maybe it’s a good thing to be one of them. That’s different, huh?
There are a couple of guy vampires who get involved. First there’s Dmitry, who is a playful scientist. Yes, playful scientist. Then there’s Arrick, who is consuming and has an instant connection with Claire. I really liked that both guys are so different from each other, but neither is a jerk. I definitely like one more than the other for Claire, but I won’t say which. Love triangles are starting to wear on me, but this time it's cool because the guys are at least nice. There's no clear-cut bad choice here, so I can actually imagine that Claire did have to do some heavy thinking.
Family secrets play a big role in what leads up to an unexpected ending. Megan Duncan has a great way of throwing her readers off and then giving them little clues and throwing them off the trail again. And, oh, I was thrown off!

COVER COMMENTS
The BLOOD pouring down is sooooo cool! I really love the simplicity of this cover.
I just want to say WOW. I love Megan Duncan's style of writing and this story is original and captivating.
Claire has just turned 18 and has to register for a Blood ID card. The Royal Family are all vampires, and the people of the land have to donate blood each month as food for them. The land is peaceful and the vampires rule fairly. Claire then gets invited to be adopted by the royal family - to become their princess. Leaving her world behind Claire embarks on a dangerous journey.
I loved the idea of a having a Vampire Monarchy and a sort of truce between the people, it's a different idea and really works. I was worried that it would take some of the danger and mystery out of the vampires but when you met them they still had it!
Claire makes friends with a young Vampire named Robin - I love her. She is so lively, fiesty, fun and cheeky. Such a big personality that leaps out of the book. Claire also has her enemies, Ana another vampire seems to have it in for Claire, any mention of her evil glares or spitting comments had the hairs on the back of my neck lifting.
Of course the book includes a super hot love interest. Dmitry catches Claire's eye, and you keep wondering if they will every get together. There is the start of a love triangle in the book and a massive twist at the end that I never saw coming. I already know which 'team' I'm on, but I'm not going to give it away.
The descriptions in this book were wonderful, I could really picture the palace and the people, even the ball gowns and decorations. It felt like I was there.
I have never read a 365 page book so quickly, but I enjoyed every second and found it hard to pull away.
This is the first book in a new series by Megan Duncan, the author of Released. Claire Miller is your average girl, living in a region where vampires and humans coexist relatively peacefully. She and her best friend Liz are freshly 18, dreaming of what comes next for them. Nothing could have prepared Claire; not even 18 for more than 24 hours and Claire's life turns upside down.
From the moment I started the book, I was hooked. With so much vampire fiction on the market, as much as I love it, sometimes it can get a little stale. This book came at it from an entirely new direction and it was fresh and exciting! It was so different from anything I have read before that I just didn't want to put it down, pulling me in with every page turn. As with Released, the author pulls you in with the characters, making them fresh and original and entirely identifiable. Whether they were likeable or not, the surpassed the title "vampire" and were at their core people, with all of the emotions and behaviors that we, as lowly humans, can relate to.
I enjoyed reading this book, engrossed from beginning to end. And I can't wait for the next in the series, Indulge, due out in December 2011. And I can't forget to mention the cover, which I found stunning! Definately a must read for vampire lovers!
Savor was a quick easy read, that has great mythology and the elements for a great series. The book starts with a bang and ends with one but has a bit of a lull in the middle. Claire gets chosen to become a part of the royal vampire family which sets a good pace at first, but once she's turned things start to get a bit slow. The middle of the story is mostly occupied by conflicting feelings and mistrust. Claire doesn't act on any of her feelings or suspicions, instead she just lets everything play out around her like a "pawn", which she aptly describes herself as. It was really frustrating, Claire knew she was a gamepiece but continued to play the game without so much as a peep. For someone who adores a good strong female lead you can understand my irritation. The ending however was fantastic, all kinds of secrets get revealed that change the whole direction of the story and the romance gets seriously amped up. I charged through the last 50 pages completely absorbed. I also quickly fell in love with Claire's bloodmate, who shall remain nameless to keep it spoiler free. Overall great beginning, great ending with the potential for an even better second installment, that I'm definitely looking forward to.
Is that cover not beautiful? Ok, so when I won this I hadn't heard of the series before and was ready to give it a go. I am so glad I did!
Everyone knows there are Vampires and The Royal Vampire family rule over Claire's region. I loved the storyline it's a unique take on Vamps. Everyone over 18 makes "donations" to the royal family. You get a donor card just like a drivers licence, wicked cool. You get a glimpse of the human characters that surround Claire and well I thought they were kinda crazy.
Claire is a great character, she is real in her actions and thoughts. Very relate-able! She is thrust into something beyond her , she thinks. She's not a super heroin but she is adjusting which I think is a good thing. The Royal family... I fell for all of them. Well except 2 *shudders* The King and Queen made me believe in them and love them. There is one Vampire guy that I absolutely fell head over heels for, Dmitry *swoon* he is one of a kind! Also, Arrick *swoon* umm yeah he's yummy and so amazing.
The ending blew me away! I am chomping at the cover to read Indulge *next in the series*!! This is a great and enjoyable read, get it you won't be sorry!!
Damn, this book was good. I loved the concept when I first saw this in the giveaway section of this site. Then I went on Barnes and Noble and saw the book was .99 cents. I bought it immediately, and I'm so glad I did. This is quite a unique, lovely book. I liked the idea of the vampires being known of and not being persecuted (well, not totally, saying any more would be spoilers xD). I love the set up and how the pacing of this book was. The drama is juicy, and you get suckered into a great novel.
Claire was so cool. I loved how she went from who she was in the beginning to changing and maturing and so many ways. Her human life is not really payed much attention, so I'll talk about some of the characters she meets later on. I loved Robin. She was so sweet and loyal and awesome. We'd both probably geek out over history together (history geeks unite!) Dmitry, damn he was sexy. I can say that I am on his team firmly :)
After reading this book I was in love. In love with the writing, the characters and the plot line. I just loved the book so much!
What I loved the most is the plot line. It was intense and kept me reading faster. I love how easy it was for me to fall into the book and not looked back. I liked how Ms. Duncan threw surprises at every pages turn. A new secret, a new rule, a new hate, a new person! So much to gobble down that it is extremely filling!
I love how the characters feeling were well detailed and express. I felt the anxiety of the characters growth but also delighted in their learning experience. The main character, Claire, I felt grew the amount she needed to grow. She still has lot to learn as well as the reader. I like how Ms. Duncan left the reader with a great ending the makes the reader want more.
Savor is an delightful book. I felt immense love for it and could read it over and over again. I love the drama, the emotions, and especially underlying betrayals discovered! This is a book you will savor!
I loved Savor it was a perfect mix of dystopia and paranormal. I liked the mythology Megan used for her vampires in her series and I like learning about the royal family and everyone’s role. Savor ended in such a cliff hanger that I can’t wait for the next one it may just kill me to have to wait. I found Claire’s character to be relatable and complex. I like how she deals with her problems of bullies and transitioning between her human life to her vampire life. I love Robin’s character she the perfect best friend. I hope we get to see more of her in the next novel.
Megan has become one of my favorite indie authors both Released and Savor have put spells on me that I must finish as soon as possible. I highly suggest picking up her novels
I read this book in one day and to be more accurate a few hours. I just could not put it down. If your looking for a great different vampire book than you looked in the right spot. The book is very good and drew me in from the beginning. I loved Claire and Arrick relationship even before it existed. I liked Demitry but I felt there was something off about him. Spoiler......... I am curious about her blood bond to Arrick because if she is his Blood Mate does that not also make him her vampire. Are they not both blood mate and vampire to each other? That is just a curiousity that I hope will be answered in the next book. But overall I loved the book and cannot wait for the next book to be published.
Wow! As a rule, I'm not really that into vampire books after Twilight, but Savor was unique and exciting. There were a few errors in the writing, but for the most part, it was really good. Claire, as far as heroines go, was a very real character. She was bad ass while still managing to show some vulnerability. I also liked that she was wishy washy just like a real 18 year old would be. Claire embraced an uncertain future and develops in a young vampire that is full of life despite that fact. She finds romance, intrigue, and pain, not to mention plenty of anger. This was truly a fantastic story! I highly recommend this book to any paranormal genre fan. Don't let the fact that it's another Vampire series deter you from purchasing this book today!
