Richard Exley is a man with a rich diversity of experiences. He has been a pastor, conference and retreat speaker, as well as a radio broadcaster. In addition he has written more than 30 books including The Rhythm of Life, Man of Valor, When You Lose Someone You Love, and The Alabaster Cross. The Making of a Man was one of five finalists for the Gold Medallion Devotional Book of the Year. The Methodist Episcopal Church USA and the National Clergy Council Board of Scholars awarded him the Doctorate of Divinity honoris causa for his life's work in ministry and writing. As a boy, Richard lived part-time with his widowed grandmother. Her home had electricity but she didn't trust it, so she only used it to power her refrigerator. When darkness fell she lit the kerosene lamps, casting the tiny living room with its braided rag rugs and coal oil stove in its ambient light. During those long winter evenings she spun out the story of her life. It was there Richard learned the art of storytelling, a craft that enables him to touch the heart through both his writing and speaking. He loves spending time with his wife, Brenda Starr, in their secluded cabin overlooking picturesque Beaver Lake. He enjoys quiet talks with old friends, kerosene lamps, good books, a warm fire when it's cold, and a good cup of coffee anytime. He's an avid Denver Broncos fan, an aspiring bass fisherman, and an amateur photographer. And he hopes to become one of your favorite authors.
Witness the Passion by Richard Exley is an enthralling book that draws you in the moment it begins. Exley describes Jesus' death and resurrection using excellently portrayed perspectives of those who were there. Since the book is historical fiction, it is not exactly what they thought and said, but is based on a phenomenal event that forever granted those who believe eternal life and left an amazing story that has been passed from generation to generation. He walks in the shoes of some truly amazing and well known people that were involved in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The reader is instantly drawn to the extremely realistic imagery the author creates; leaving them wanting more and more every chapter. I truly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a genuine interpretation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I would therefore give this book a five out of five.
Despite its brevity this book brings answers to a prayer I’ve had for years. Somehow these words are made real bridged by faith and imagination. This interpretation of the Bible has made The Lord almost tangible to me. A genuine blessing and treasure.
Pleasantly surprised by this book. Although written in 2004, it reminded of The Chosen in that the story of Christ is told through those around him who witness the crucifixion. Recommended for those who like the style portrayed in The Chosen.
Some people would consider this book a work of fiction, but that's true only to a point. Richard Exley uses fictional accounts of the people in the life of Christ to demonstrate how many of us feel today about the crucifixion. Along the way, he provides interesting insights into who Jesus is and what it means to Christians all over the world.
