We all know that time travel is just not possible...don't we? Erin knows it, of course. How can she explain what happens to her when she buys an old house and finds a locket hidden in a wall? Can she prevent the tragic deaths of young lovers Isabelle and Flynn? Erin can't explain it at all. You see Isabelle and Flynn died one hundred years ago, in 1910. Is Erin being given the chance to save the young lovers, or is this a cruel twist of fate that could see her threaten the very existence of someone she loves dearly in her own time? Only one thing is certain, the more Erin tries to change the events of the past, the more she comes to see that time has its own agenda...and there appears to be no way to stop it.
Mitchell's debut novel captures the charm, ignorance, and harsh primitive cultural behaviour of the early 20th century that we generally perceive. It is a little clichéd and even slightly caricatured at times but the story has a lean cut narrative written with a smooth easy flowing style devoid of any bloated details and moves the story along at a nice pace.
The main focus of the book are on 3 female protagonists, two from 1910 and our time traveller from 2010 who is trying to fix a tragedy in 1910 without disrupting the course of events that leads to her own relationship with her fiancé in 2010. Its an engaging plot and split into 2 strands which converges. A minor gripe is that the female's thought process do bewilder me at times and are sometimes annoyingly naive. I can never work out a woman's train of thought in real life anyway, so I'm guessing this novel would be enjoyed even more by a female audience who could probably very loosely relate more to the protagonist but as a male, I did still enjoy the novel despite irritations of some of the character's naivety and coyish romances. However, the characters do thankfully mature through their sometimes rough experiences.
If you want an explanation of how time travel was possible, forget it, there is none. Its simply a time travel plot device that whisks you back and forth in time. Why and how is just left to our own imagination, magic, science, divine interference, you choose. Main is the cause, effects and loops of our time travellers endeavours, is very enjoyable, neatly done but not too complex.
Although this is a romance novel, there is nothing explicit. There is one disturbing "attack" scene but care is taken not to be too explicit with that either and it is essential to the plot.
The ending may or may not work for you but regardless, if you love time travel romance fused with a sprinkle of Jane Austen, I'm sure you'll enjoy this and I for one recommend it.
I won this book participating in a contest on the time travel book club and was excited to begin reading it. The book is by an author who lives in New Zealand. It has an element of time travel but no real explanation of why the time travel happens. It is more like magic. The time travel element is crucial to the story but does not figure in the drama which takes place in the book except to offer some humor as the time traveler has a different manner and way of speaking as compared to the people she encounters.
I was at first a little bored with the book due to the repetitiveness of the main character having to go back and forth in time. Then in part II things got much more interesting and I began to enjoy the story.
I liked the refreshingly unique dialogue between the characters and the humorous situations due to how our language has changed in the modern age vs. 100 years ago. I wish there had been more of this.
This book could almost be a play. I kept thinking of the situations as scenes and acts in a play. I thought of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" or "The Tempest." The interplay between the characters and the almost comedic situations kept me reading.
The last part of the book was very frustrating for me. I do not want to give away anything but it seemed that the flow of the book was interrupted. Sometimes I think an author should let a book write itself and have the story take you where it takes you.
All in all this was a satisfying read and kept me entertained and interested throughout. I would recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy adventure, romance, humor and a bit of fantasy.
I love reading books by NZ authors, set in locations that I know! This is a bit of a pot-boiler, but one that does draw the reader in. Even though some of the historical details are a little inaccurate, or dodgy, the storytelling flows well.....it kept me going to the (happy) ending.
