The phenomenal Lewis Trondheim is never where you next expect him. As an artist and writer, Trondheim has earned an international following as one of the most inventive, versatile, and prolific graphic authors. From autobiography to adventure, from bestselling fantasy and children's books to visual essays, Trondheim's unique, seminal imagination consistently dazzles. His work has won numerous awards, including the Angoulême prize for best series with McConey and he also co-created the titanic fantasy epic Dungeon with Joann Sfar.

He is one of the founding members of the alternative publishing house L'Association, a proving ground for many of the greatest talents in European comics working today. He is also the editorial director of a new imprint called Shampooing, dedicated to comics for all ages.

Lewis lives in the South of France with his wife, Brigitte Findakly, and two children.

Je viens juste de terminer le dernier Trondheim et je ne sais pas vraiment quoi en penser. Je vais commencer par en faire le pitch, cet exercice m'aidera peut-être à rassembler mes idées. Le décor est un univers de fantasy qui n'en utilise pas tous les codes mais on y trouve tout de même l'essentiel: quelques monstres et de la magie. Ce premier tome est centré sur un village dans lequel vit un personnage un brin agaçant. Il a un look de babos, les cheveux longs, une sorte de bouc décorant son menton et un comportement pour le moins énervant. Il est irrévérencieux, désagréable, fainéant — ça ne serait pas un ado par hasard. A tel point que son comportement a fini par irriter tout le village qui l'a sévèrement pris en grippe — il flirte clairement avec le bannissement. Pourtant, cet ado énervant porte un signe distinctif, la couleur bleue, qui fait de lui un élu.

Comme à son habitude, Lewis Trondheim utilise dans son univers des personnages anthropomorphiques — le personnage principal appartient à la ligné des canards. La couleur est toujours aussi prépondérante et c'est toujours Brigitte Findakly, l'épouse de l'auteur, qui est aux commandes. Cependant, c'est un peu différent de d'habitude. Les grands aplats de couleurs vives laissent la place à un rendu plus nuancé qui fait penser à un traitement plus naturel. Personnellement, je ne suis pas fan, j'aimais beaucoup les univers très colorés utilisés dans les autres oeuvres de Trondheim.
En ce qui concerne l'histoire, mon sentiment est mitigé. Je trouve que la partie qui se déroule au présent est inintéressante; les facéties d'un ado attardé ont tendance à lasser assez rapidement. Par contre, l'histoire du père du personnage est plus élaborée et ne manque pas d'éveiller la curiosité du lecteur qui se focalisera rapidement sur ce statut mystérieux d'élu. Pour le dire clairement, j'ai été déçu. Ce premier tome aura un suite et je dois avoir que je ne suis pas sûr de poursuivre l'aventure. http://www.aubonroman.com/2011/03/je-...

Jestem zachwycony tą serią. Ralph to chodzący sarkazm, nie przypominam sobie tak kapitalnej postaci w komiksie. Sporo się dzieje, ale wszystko jest logiczne (nawet jeśli początkowo nie wygląda). Fantasy zobrazowane kreską, która najpierw zaskakuje, a potem okazuje się znakiem firmowym serii. Przyznaję, że myślałem, że to opowieśc dla dzieci albo chociaż dla wszystkich (jak "Gnat"), ale nie, to jest materiał na dobry serial zrealizowany przez HBO czy innego Netflixa. Błyskotliwe pod każdym względem.

While reading it I just thought it was nice. But the fact I didn't have immediate access to the whole series made me think about the story over and over, and I realized it triggered more thoughts and feelings than I had anticipated. I can only applaud Trondheim's skill for worldbuilding, and setting a unique tone. I want to read the rest of it, now. And I mlight have to rethink that star rating too.

Excellent ! Humour grinçant, parfaite maîtrise de la narration, mise en page dynamique, personnages touchants et monde esquissé en seulement quelques cases... Ce premier tome est l'exemple parfait d'un premier tome réussi et j'ai hâte de découvrir la suite !

I liked
My first book from Trondheim, Lewis, knowing nothing from him but his name.
Illustrations are quite original to say the least, the universe slowly unfolds and barely fits any know genre. Work on the colors is pretty smooth.
Well.. I laughed to some silly jokes, and I'm usually quite picky about this things :]
I disliked
As much as the cover style isn't what I usually go for, there's nothing I can't say I liked about this first episode.
So..

Du bon Trondheim niaiseux comme on l’aime. L’univers se dévoile un peu dans ce premier tome, mais la quête de Ralph n’est pas encore très claire. On sent la volonté de créer une intrigue étoffée, mais ce n’est finalement qu’un premier chapitre qui s’enfarge un peu trop dans ses propres jokes. Quand même sympathique.

Crtež mi se sviđa, taman odgovara zajebanciji, crnom humoru i licemerju pojedinaca. Ono "U balegu!" mi je toliko preslatko, negde komično, a negde nemoćno, bezizlazno, bezidejno... a negde isprva deluje bezmudo da bi nas Ralf ubrzo razuverio.
Sa pojedinih stranica stižu i zanimljive životne mudrosti. Npr:
- Hoćemo li leteti onamo?
- Ne, već pažljivo stavljati nogu pred nogu!
Nadam se da ovo neće popustiti u kasnijim delovima. Za sada mi se baš baš sviđa!

I bought this book for the illustrations, which are funny and richly-colored. The story was interesting, too, even if it was a little short. But I was not overly pleased with the cadence of much of the dialogue. The original version was written in Dutch, and I read the English translation, so I'm not sure whether the author, Lewis Trondheim, or the translator, Kim Thompson, is to blame, but much of the dialogue could have benefited from some minor tweaking. It was a minor weakness, though, and the book remained enjoyable, especially in light of the dark turn that it takes during its denouement.

I love Trondheim - pretty much everything by him. While this was no exception, I'd make the minor complaints that it was maybe overly similar to some of his other "fantasy" work, and that I didn't think the dialogue read as well as some of his other works (I can't say if that's due to the translation or just the original text not being that great). Still, an enjoyable read - I'd be in for the rest of the series, but with the death of Kim Thompson, I'm not sure they'll make it to English anytime soon.

J’avais bien aimé les aventures de Lapinot et dans cette série, on retrouve le dessin et l’humour décalé qui caractérisent Lewis Trondheim. Je ne suis pas porté à lire du fantastique par contre ce tome m’a beaucoup plu. Les dessins sont simples et parfois enfantins, mais si drôles et efficaces. L’action met du temps à démarrer, mais on découvre des personnages profonds. Je lirai certainement le 2e tome.

Décalage un peu déconcertant entre le fond, qui s'appuie sur une histoire un peu complexe, et la forme, associant trait léger de Trondheim et notes d'humour à base de répliques sarcastiques. En tout cas on reconnait bien là son style, mais on a un peu l'impression d'être dans un Lapinot fantasy. A voir comment ça évoluera dans le prochain tome.

Bon premier tome. J'ai bien aimé l'histoire.
J'ai toujours été attiré par le dessin de Lewis Trondheim,déjà dans la série Donjon,à laquelle me fait penser cette BD (et cette fois-ci le style de couleur employé, qui apporte une légèreté à l'ensemble ).
Les personnages sont attirants. .
Vivement la lecture des prochains tomes.

This was an extremely quick read for me. Literally half an hour, maybe less. I felt the characters were very one dimensional for the most part and the idea behind it was interesting to say the least. I didn't feel like it was a waste of my time so I would recommend reading it.

Trondheim's talent is the best kind -- the deceptively simple kind. His figures always seem basic, but so much art and life and personality is inside of them. HOW DOES HE DO IT? AND WHY DOESN"T MY LIBRARY HAVE THE FOLLOWING INSTALLMENTS OF THIS BOOK?!?!?

Všeč so mi take zgodbe, kjer glavni junak ni junak, sicer bi tale Ralph mogu bit nek izbrani, pa ni bil, in v bistvu dela več problemov v vasi kot pa koristi :) sam kr ni blo dovolj zgodbe - k je prvi del v seriji samo. Ampak risba mi je pa kr všeč.
