She teaches theatre arts at the University of Pittsburgh and fiction writing at the Chatham University Low-Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing.
She is married to the writer Hilary Masters, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. They reside in Pittsburgh.

Pretty predictable. Not much excitement

Definitely part of a series... MUST read these books as part of a series, as the majority of the book is which cop is having sex with which other cop, ... Pretty boring, when you're hoping to read a thriller.
Also, they're not all that good at their job, as Jack actually turned around to help the old folks and turned himself into them. Poor kid was the only interesting aspect of this book.
Anyway, some of it was decent, but these rent-a-cops ruined the whole story.

I have no idea how I came to get this book from the library being #5 in a series written years ago...be that as it may....it was an easy fast read which was perfect for a Saturday on a banana chair in the sunshine.

I went on a spree of easy recreational reads in December and this book was one of the good ones. A tightly-plotted police procedural which ratcheted up the tension and suspense, along with realistic characterization.

I read the book Hideout, it is about 2 young boys who hit a woman while driving and ran and hid. The story takes place at a house on Sugar Lake near Pittsburg. The two brothers Jack and Ryan were never very kids to begin with and got themselves into even more trouble.
The theme of the book, Hideout, is you can’t run from your problems forever, they will always come back to get you. First when they ran and hit the lady, they had the guilt trapped inside of them that they had killed someone. After that when Ryan ran after beating up an elderly man for money, he took his dog and the dog found his owner dead, which lead to the finding of where Ryan was hiding. Last when the man who owned the house the brothers were secretly staying at came back, they had to tie him up. After leaving him there and trying to escape, they were caught since the old man was found and overheard where they were going.
This book is told from 3rd person omniscient point of view, because the narrator is outside the story and they can see all the characters thoughts. The audience for this book is for kids my age and older. The characters occasionally swear and talks about the law and how the police use their different techniques to try and find the boys. I thought the book was good except for that it dragged on and took everything a really long time for it to happen.
The quote from the book shows that the narrator can see inside characters heads. “The first thing he felt was a knock at his heart, change making its way into his blood.” This quote is on page 110 and is in paragraph 7.
I can relate to the theme of this book because sometimes I too try and run from my problems instead of facing them. This book has taught me that if you do one bad mistake and try and hide it all the other things you do to try and cover it up, will get you caught and you will have an even greater punishment. I enjoyed reading Hideout, it was very suspenseful and I thought it was cool how the story went back and forth between the two brothers’ point of view and the detective’s view.

This second of a police procedural series featuring Pittsburgh Homicide Detective Colleen Greer revolves around two homeless brothers who kill a woman in a hit-and-run while driving whacked out of their skulls on drugs. They drive on and lay low at a summer cabin a few hours away, however, the older and more wilder of the two has a dim view of what it means to hide out, and soon digs him and his brother a much deeper hole as he gets drunk, courts trouble, and the owner of the cabin shows up.
There's actually not too much to the plot, as Det. Greer takes the lead and others join in, as they race to find the boys based on only the slimmest of leads. The fraught fraternal relationship gives the book a little depth as the "good" younger one struggles to escape the psychological hold his bullying older brother has on him. As in the previous book (The Odds), the police process is clearly laid out, and the dots connect satisfyingly. Since most of the story takes place at a lake two hours from Pittsburgh, there's some interesting cross-jurisdictional details involved.
One of the main subplots involves another lakeside resident, a spirited and sharp 83-year-old woman living on her own. Between her and Greer, the book is definitely recommended for those that like police procedurals with strong non-cartoonish female leads and psychological insights that aren't too heavy-handed.

I borrowed this book from my mother. I don't often read police/crime novels and I found it to be a welcome divergence from something that I would normally select for myself. The pace was fast with many twists and turns. It read like it could have been modeled after a real case, with plenty of unexpected but realistic events plus a few false leads and unimportant developments.
I enjoyed that it was set in Pittsburgh even though it focused on a side of Pittsburgh with which I am (thankfully) not familiar -- the seedier underside of Pittsburgh (a side that I'd rather choose to believe does not exist). I found much of the book to be pretty disturbing, so I wasn't crazy about that aspect of it but that is probably more a function of the genre than this particular novel. Maybe that is why I don't read a lot of crime.
There are many point of view switches within each chapter and I found it a bit hard to follow at first. But once I got used to the flow, I appreciated the rapid changes. It kept it interesting and moving along quickly. I wouldn't necessarily race out to read another Kathleen George police thriller but if one happened to find itself on my bookshelf it probably wouldn't collect dust there for too long either.

I thoroughly enjoy this series from Kathleen George. She's from Pittsburgh and it's where her stories take place. It really makes you feel like you're right along for the ride or in the action because you know exactly where she's talking about. Oddly enough, I'd never heard of Sugar Lake and I am pretty well-traveled around Pittsburgh. I knew the other places though and pictured the "cottages" in my head based on other places I know like that. In addition, I used to know a lot of Pittsburgh police and have kind of given my own faces to the characters in this series.
All of her stories are very true to life and so it's refreshing that she's not writing about something that is really a stretch to buy into. Her characters are strong when they need to be and vulnerable when called for as well. Oftentimes, you end up feeling sorry for one of the "criminals" (for lack of a better word) because she makes you very sympathetic to their plight.
It only takes me a few hours to read these because they are definite page turners. I always try to support the local writers and this one gets a two-thumbs up!

I liked this book. 4/5 stars. Was a good book by Kathleen George, and now I love her work. The new book in Kathleen George’s Pittsburgh-set police series begins when a young mother dies in a hit-and-run accident caused by two young brothers, Jack and Ryan Rutter. Both being high school dropouts, and alcohol abusers, they tend to live in their truck most of the time. They were drunk, and DUI, and ended up taking the life of a young mother. Desperate and afraid, Jack and Ryan Rutter flee to Sugar Lake, the summer community where they vacationed as children, with their second dad, Ryan's dad. As Detectives Colleen Greer and Richard Christie search for the brothers, Jack and Ryan create a terrifying hostage situation involving the man who owned the vacation lodge, and a sweet old lady who lived in the lodge just down the street. As fast-paced Hideout is scripted, the brothers continue to be on the run. Great description of events, and an amazing piece of literature overall, just like Sonia Sanchez, therefore deserving 4/5 stars.

I'll keep this very brief as others have already posted extensive reviews and at the same time I'm not very good at writing reviews. I have to say that overall I really did enjoy this book. There were a few times throughout the book where I felt the story could have moved a long faster or certain scenarios were unreal (at least to me). However I always found myself wanting to keep reading which is a sign that this was a good read. The book had some great moments but to me the book shines around the last 160 or so pages. I was very tired yesterday while reading and I wanted to take a nap but suddenly the story got so interesting that I found myself unable to stop reading! I even found myself emotionally tied to some characters and I constantly thought to myself to please not let certain things happen to certain characters (as to not spoil for future readers).

My first Kathleen George was "Simple," the 6th in this series. I liked that one a lot, and was surprised at the depth of police procedural knowledge and good story telling from a theater professor. It was a good read and I tried more of George. This one, much earlier, was a disappointment. Slow, tedious, unsharp characters, except for Addie, I wonder if I'll give George one more chance. These are the Richard Christie series, but after two books I still do not have a clear picture of the guy! But the writing is worth the read, that's for sure!

Having liked George's SIMPLE (and needing something to read), I tried an earlier title in the same series and have to say that I wish I'd read these in order. I think I would have enjoyed the developing character relationships more...they definitely overshadow the "mystery," which is pretty light. So I'd say give the Coleen Greer series a try but start at the beginning.

I found this story focussed too much on the lives of the police officers working the case (who was sleeping with who etc) instead of the crime that was committed, which made the story drag a little. I would have liked the ending to have expanded a bit more.
